The Road World Championships conclude with the men's and women's elite road races this weekend, after Remco Evenepoel and Marlen Reusser rode to ITT glory in Montreal. Tadej Pogacar's season-ending injury has blown the men's race wide open, while Demi Vollering's head-scratching travails in tandem with local hero Magdeleine Vallieres' sensational breakthrough illustrate the futility of trying to portend the women's race.
Vollering is one of the road race favourites – on paper, at least. The all-time great has failed to make the podium in six of her previous seven starts at the Road World Championships, and finished a lowly eighth in the ITT despite being one of the top riders in the field. Vallieres, who was born and raised in Quebec, took full advantage of two-time champion Lotte Kopecky's absence a year ago, but the Dutch rider is back to try to reclaim the crown.
Among the standout contenders for the men's crown are Tom Pidcock, who stands to go down in cycling lore as the first man to win the mountain bike, cyclo-cross and road world titles, along with Isaac del Toro, who pipped Paul Seixas to the line on the same streets earlier this month, and – if they can work together – Belgian duo Wout van Aert and Evenepoel.
The women's and men's road races around the Mount Royal circuit come in at 180.1km with 2,570m of climbing, and 273.4km with with 3,803m of climbing, respectively. Both races end with multiple loops around the city.
