Spain also has five sides entering this year's league phase, with La Liga champions Barcelona and 15-time winners Real Madrid with the title in their crosshairs, and Atlético Madrid, Real Betis and Villarreal all hoping to battle their way through to the knockouts.
Germany's Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, Italy's Inter Milan and Napoli, and continent stalwarts such as PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands), Porto (Portugal) and Galatasary (Turkiye) are perennial threats. While it will be interesting to see who this year's Bodø/Glimt will be — could the likes of Como (Italy), LASK (Austria) or Sabah (Azerbaijan) cause some upsets?
Matchweek 1 (8th to 10th September) sees the reigning champions handed a relatively easy opener against Slovak minnows Slovan Bratislava at the Parc des Princes in Paris on Wednesday, while Arsenal face a much trickier task with a visit to Napoli on the same day. Real Madrid vs Inter Milan (Tue.) is undoubtedly the most eye-catching tie of the round, with Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid (Wed.) and Bayern München vs Bodø/Glimt (Thu.) also standing out.

How can I watch Champions League 2026/27 for free?
You can watch multiple UCL games free-of-charge in Ireland, Turkiye, Belgium and Luxembourg each matchweek.
In Ireland, up to six Champions League ties are shown on free-to-air Virgin Media Two each week, with live streaming available via Virgin Media Play.
