Watch Vuelta a España 2026: Preview
With five Tour de France titles to his name (including the last three editions) and the 2024 Giro d'Italia, 'Pogi Star' is looking to join the ranks of Eddy Merckx, Alberto Contador and Chris Froome as winners of all three Grand Tour events. It's an elite field that includes only eight riders, and will rubber stamp the Slovenian — as if he needed it — as one of the sport's all-time greats. And he's still only 27!
With last year's winner Jonas Vingegaard (another of those Grand Tour completists) out injured, it's not immediately clear which of the field will present the strongest challenge to Pogačar. Compatriot Primož Roglič is a four-time winner event and success this year would see him the outright record holder. But, aged 36, it's hard to imagine him keeping up with the extraordinary pace and endurance of his fellow Slovenian.
Joao Almeida, Oscar Onley and Richard Carapaz are the names the bookies have at the shortest odds apart from Pogacar who is, of course, odds-on favorite to prevail. But with extreme heat, brutal climbs and a total of 3,275km to cover over the 21 stages, the welfare of the riders will surely be in focus — no less so after the recent tragic death of Brit Fin Tarling during the Volta a Portugal.
