Mexican Grand Prix 2025: preview

Having been almost 100 points behind Piastri and Norris five race weekends ago, Verstappen is now within 26 of Norris and 40 of Piastri. He's scored 119 points from a maximum of 133 in the intervening period, which is as many as Piastri and Norris combined. With the remaining five races – and two Sprints – worth up to 141 points and Andrea Stella and Zak Brown still yet to decide on a No.1 driver, it feels as if Mclaren are sleepwalking into disaster.

Of the trio, only Norris made the Mexico City podium last year. He came home in P3, way ahead of Verstappen in P6 and Piastri in P8. However, the high altitude makes this venue an especially tricky one, and over recent weeks Verstappen has dominated Piastri and Norris at all manner of circuits with wildly disparate characteristics.

Not only does the thin air at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez mess with the F1 cars' aerodynamics, power unit performance and downforce, it also makes them prone to overheating. In terms of overtaking, that plays into the hands of Verstappen, who's a much more purposeful driver than Norris. Piastri had been amongst the smoothest operators on the grid until a disastrous recent spate of crashes that have knocked his confidence.
