Apple finally lifted the lid on its most anticipated smartphone to date, with the iPhone Duo marking the Californian tech giant's first step into the foldable phone market.
While Apple spent most of its annual iPhone event touting the AI (that's Apple Intelligence, not Artificial Intelligence, by the way) capabilities and camera quality of its first foldable, we did get a sneak peek at how movies will look and sound on the phone.
An uninterrupted, anti-glare-equipped 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display with "Wide-angle OLEDs for excellent viewing angles", alongside a stereo speaker system that supports spatial audio, should make this the best AV product to come from Apple this year; and that's an issue in itself...
Apple neglected to update its 4K streaming box yet again, despite rumours that an upgraded version has been in the works for years now. Delays are cited as being caused by Apple having to overhaul its Apple Intelligence system after it fell short of expectations after its launch alongside the iPhone 16 series.
The new Apple TV 4K is expected to rely heavily on the upgraded Siri system shown off during the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo event, and a new rumour even suggests that it could sport the same A19 or A19 Pro chipset from the iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Pro, respectively.
While rumours don't always tell the full picture, the truth of the matter is that Apple is really dragging its feet with the new Apple TV 4K. It's already lost some goodwill by raising the price of the existing TV 4K from £149 to £199 for the 64GB model, and from £169 to £249 for the 128GB model, earlier this year.
And need I remind you that the price increase has been applied to a product that launched almost four years ago.
A new Apple TV 4K is the real AV-focused announcement that I'm waiting for, and I feel as though my patience really isn't paying off at this point. I wrote this rant almost exactly a year ago (a year ago yesterday, actually), venting my frustrations and claiming that "I am losing patience"; if I was starting to lose patience in September of last year, you can imagine how I feel now.
While I am genuinely excited to try the iPhone Duo out, and I'm sure it will make a stellar portable movie-watching machine, I prefer to watch my movies on an OLED TV or projector, which is why I'm waiting for Apple to make a proper announcement for home cinema enthusiasts.
In the meantime, I'll keep waiting for Apple to finally pull the plug on the ageing (but still excellent) Apple TV 4K (2022); surely it can't be much longer now...
