CES 2012: Sony bucks the OLED trend with Crystal LED display prototype

Unlike its Korean rivals, LG and Samsung, Sony isn't going down the OLED route for its latest next-gen TV prototype, on display here at CES 2012 in Las Vegas.
Instead, it's developed a Crystal LED display, using individual ultrafine red, green and blue LEDs for each pixel – some six million of them in the 55in prototype.
Sony says that compared to its existing TVs, Crystal LED has around 3.5 times higher contrast, approximately 1.4 times wider color gamut, and approximately 10 times faster video image response time.
The company isn't giving up on OLED, but says while it will continue to work on the development and commercialisation of the technology, it will also 'work conscientiously to bring the Crystal LED Display to market'.
The prototype display has 1920x1080-pixel resolution, offers brightness of approximately 400cd/sq m, a viewing angle of 'approximately 180 degrees', and contrast described as 'more than measurable limit values'.
Power consumption for the 55in panel is 70W, and Sony expects it to be initially targeted at commercial and technical display applications.

yes,its extremely competitive, the tv market, now more than ever, even with the indifference towards 3D-Although i must admit i was curious how it would look in the home, pleasently surprised but more into actual PQ & web access/content. But they really have moved on since 2009 or so.
Good one sony,invent a tv tech,as usual samsung/lg follows,then come out with something different...smart!
Yes, the 11in Sony was an OLED, and it was sold in various markets. The company also showed larger prototypes at various events, including CEATEC a few years back.
By the time that Sony TV, the XEL-1, was launched in 2007, Samsung was already established as the world's leading manufacturer of such displays, and in 2005 had shown a 25in prototype TV display.
Samsung's still the world's leading OLED/AMOLED manufacturer, and the largest holder of patents in the field, although the original work on the technology was done at, among other places, Philips, GE and Kodak, along with various academic research institutions as far back as the 1960s.
I doubt the Samsung buy-out of Sony from S-LCD has anything to do with this prototype: the S-LCD exit is more to do with a need for Sony's TV division to cut costs in an attempt to turn it round from its current enormous losses.
And as the story says, Sony isn't abandoning OLED, but merely exploring this as one different approach.
wasn't the 11" sony tv an oled tv,whf had a first look at,a couple of years back?i think i remember there was a display model in harrods, the only 1 in uk at the time.Maybe a reason they sold their share of s-lcd to samsung is the beginning of this crystal led tv manufacturing in due course. At least their trying to be original.Good one sony, invent a tv tech,as usual samsung/lg follows, then come out with something different...smart!
