NEWS: OLEDs on a roll with new manufacturing process?

More affordable OLED (organic LED) displays now look possible, thanks to a development made by the research operation of General Electric.

The GE boffins have managed to develop a process whereby the screens can be printed on a 'roll-to-roll' system, just like that used to produce newspapers.

And while this stage of the research is firmly aimed at the lighting market, the processes demonstrated could pave the way for much more cost-effective manufacturing of OLED displays.

Anil Duggal, manager of GE’s Advanced Technology Program in Organic Electronics, says that “Commercial applications in lighting require low manufacturing costs, and this demonstration is a major milestone on our way to developing low cost OLED lighting devices.

“Beyond OLEDs, this technology also could have broader impact in the manufacturing of other organic electronic devices such as organic photovoltaics for solar energy conversion, sensors and roll-up displays.”
