got my sky box linked to avr with hdmi and optical.playing around i find the optical output is dolby d ex (bbc hd..in dd)...shouldn't it display dolby digital?

No, DD uses lossy compression. LPCM is uncompressed audio.

Forgive my ignorance but I think GSB was less interested in Dolby technology but more with the Sky signal and how his receiver interprets the various surround formats.
But I know nuffin'.
