FM's poor quality

With the arrival of my new headphones with a very extended frequency range, I can now truly hear the quality of my sources. My FM tuner, the Rotel RT-02 though, is a bit poor. To start with, there is distortion on the transients of music even though the signal strength is at maximum, the bass is very flabby and the treble seems to have no extention what so ever and occupies just one "tish" sound. Is this the quality of FM, or is it my tuner?

But my Rotel is much more expensive than the Denons - surely it must be better? On Radio 3 and 4 it's very good, but on the rest it's poor - is this really right?

My Primare is much more expensive than my Airport Express.

Have you got a roof aerial?

Could just be that the other stations you're listening to use fairly aggressive compression.

Ok, I admit I don't have a roof aerial, but I have a huge roof aerial installed in the loft and mounted on the wall high up in there too.

Andrew - I guess it may be the compression, but it's quite annoying whatever it is!

If Radio 2 sounds bad then something is wrong somewhere along the line.

If Radio 3 does, even more so.

My reception is so poor my Arc goes onto auto mute sporadically

but then I do live in a rural outpost called London. My mobile doesn't get reception downstairs either. Grrrr

Use your Sky box if you have one.

Don't have Sky sadly, but I do have quite a few decent Freeview tuners around...

Re: FM's poor quality

Well I'm listening to FM on my TU1800DAB and it sounds fantastic, even without a roof aerial. Its pulling in a really strong signal and sounds eons better than DAB.

Just because the Rotel is more expensive doesn't mean its better. IMO Denon have made the best reasonably priced tuners since the original TU260L.

FM is still the best radio.

As someone else, somewhere else said recently, not so, else we'd all be buying Bose.
