NEWS: US BD sales reach nine million

Research in the US shows Blu-ray disc sales have topped nine million since inception, with some three million of those discs flying off the shelves in 2008.

The figures, published by Home Media Research, show average weekly sales figures of BD titles ranging from between 200,000 and 300,000.

Big-sellers, such as the recent No Country For Old Men release, helped weekly sales reach 319,000, with the disc itself selling 68,000 copies in the week ending March 16th.

Interestingly – or not, you decide – the No Country For Old Men release was decidedly no frills, with only a smattering of extra features and no sign of any HD audio codecs, though there was a PCM soundtrack.

The next best-seller was Hitman: Special Edition, proving there really is no accounting for taste when it comes to Blu-ray buyers in the USA.

Still, the figures can only be a good thing, and with the number of releases, players and Blu-ray owners gathering pace, we can only presume they will rise and rise...
