Indian Wells 2023 tennis preview

Outside of the four grand slam tournaments, Indian Wells is one of the few times in the tennis season where the men's ATP and women's WTA tours come together to compete at the same venue. A de facto 'fifth major' and the jewel in the crown of both tour's 1000 series of events just below grand slam level, Indian Wells has come from the sunny Palm Springs area of California since 1987 and always offers up 10 days of superb tennis action packed full of the game's biggest stars. Now, it's down the finals.

BNP Paribas Open 2023

Venue: Indian Wells Tennis Garden, California

With no Novak Djokovic, missing the tournament again because of US rules surrounding his Covid-19 vaccination status, and an injury Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz has romped to the final without dropping a set. His ATP final opponent is the in-form Daniil Medvedev who has battled his way past Tiafoe and Zverev, among others, to be in with a chance of winning Indian Wells.

The big surprise of the tournament is in the women's game with defending women's Indian Wells champion Iga Swiatek, who went on a 37-game unbeaten run in 2022, dumped out of the contest at the semi-final stage by Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. That leaves the WTA final today as a battle of the big hitters after no. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka dispatched Maria Sakkari in their semi.

The action takes place on US west coast time but you won't have to stay up too late in the UK and Europe to watch.

Today's big matches (19th March)

  • Elena Rybakina vs Aryna Sabalenka – 8pm GMT
  • Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev – 11pm GMT
