LG Freesat TV doesn't receive any channels.

My step-daughter and son-in-law have got a new TV, LG 42LN578V, with a satellite tuner built in, so tonight I figured I'd connect it up for them because they've lost the remote for their Sky box (which they're using as a freesat box, no subscription, but working perfectly well, 100% signal quality on both inputs). Naively I figured I'd just swap one of the cables over and let it do an auto setup but it finds absolutely nothing, I noticed it defaults to Astra 19.2 so I changed that to Astra28.2 but still nothing, I've been there for two hours and it won't find anything.

Does anyone (hello DaveH!) know what the correct frequency/transponder etc settings should be? I don't seem to be able to change the FEC at all and I'm sure I stumbled across a setting for DVB-S/S2 but I'll be jiggered if I can find it now.

I'm not there right but if anyone has any suggestions I'll try them tomorrow (with a bit of luck).

The manual is useless, just says "plug the satellite cable into the input". Well, yes, I figured that much out for myself, cheers...

RE: LG Freesat TV doesn't receive any channels.

I would do a factory reset then go through auto-setup again, as it sounds like its in non-freesat mode (or whatever LG call it) if its defaulting to 19.2E.

Also try scanning/tuning 11428 H 27500 2/3 qpsk dvb-s and see if you can get a lock as thats the freesat 'home' transponder, i.e the one it tunes to on set up and grabs EPG data etc from.

I would also try the other sat feed, just to rule out any problems with that particular feed.

I thought about that but realised it would wipe the WiFi settings and I couldn't be bothered to redo them, I'll try tomorrow.

I didn't notice anything referring to freesat/non-freesat modes but I might have missed it. Should have taken a screen shot really.

Ah ok, don't remember trying that one (and I tried a few!)

That was the first thing I did, neither feed makes any difference and both appear to work perfectly on the Sky box.

Anyway, I'll give those a bash tomorrow, cheers!

RE: LG Freesat TV doesn't receive any channels.

Just been on LG's site looking for a manual (which you're right is completely useless) to see if I could see anything of any help and LG doesn't mention a sat tuner anywhere in the specs let alone freesat (though mentions the tuner but not freesat in the manual)

www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-42LN578V/reviews

So it appears it isn't a freesat TV and just has a generic sat tuner. So forget what I said about non-freesat modes and auto set-ups if that's the case.

You'll need to look in the settings for something that refers to sat tuner settings select the sats first then do a scan.

Yeah, it was which sats and what frequencies etc that I wanted to know, I can't remember all the required settings, I'll check again tomorrow.

RE: LG Freesat TV doesn't receive any channels.

It's difficult to advise without knowing how (un)sophisticated the options are and what's available in the menus, but after you've selected the sat groups eg 28.2°E there should be options to do an auto scan of some sort where it will scan all known freqs (which is what you want) and manual which you'd use to scan individual transponders.

Also bare in mind with a generic/fta sat tuner you wont have any EPG other than now/next info or any kind of ordered channel list, if your lucky it may order them alpha/numerically but most likely just in the order it scanned them, but may offer the option to group channels into favourites.

So maybe worth just sticking with the Sky box.

I wonder how you got on with this?
Been looking at the set and I would find the Satellite function useful if it works. I just tried LG's support chat and they claim the satellite does not work in the UK!
Can't see any reviews of this particular set so I'd also be grateful for any other positives / negatives you have observed.

Thanks.

Unfortunately I haven't managed to get back round there to try it again.

That would seem to make sense! I was going to take the settings from my own TV (Pioneer KRP-500A, also NOT a Freesat TV but the satellite tuner works perfectly ok) to try on theirs but it's all set to "automatic" or "all", so isn't much help. That just worked though, so why this one wouldn't I really don't know.

Well, like I said, it's not actually my TV, I've only fiddled with it once or twice, so hardly critical viewing. The online apps seem to work quite well though and the remote control phone app is quite amusing for 5 minutes!

I quite agree that the avice they gave me was probably wrong but I very much got the impression that it was a case of

"Computer says no!"  - so i did not push it.

Thanks for getting back I appreciate it .

RE: LG Freesat TV doesn't receive channels.

I will from the begining

SETTINGS

PROGRAM MODE : SATELLITE OK

SATELLITE SETTINGS

SETTINGS PICKS THE SAT YOU WANT TO USE IN UK (Astra 28.2E)

NOT SURE WHAT THIS IS SET AS DEFAULT BUT HERE IS THE PROBLEM (MINE IS SET AT 9750/10750) AND THIS IS WORKING FOR ME

LNB POWER IS OFF AS DEFAULT YOU MUST CHANGE IT TO ON MINE WAS GRAYED,

SO GO BACK TO LNB FREQUENCY AND CHANGE IT 1 AT A TIME UNTIL YOU LNB POWER OPTION LIGHTS UP GO SWITCH IT TO ON

THEN YOU SHOULD GET SIGNAL PROVIDING YOU HAVE YOUR SAT SET RIGHT SKY DISHES FITTED BY SKY DO NOT NEED MOVING
