Sky has announced a major overhaul of its Sky Go streaming app for Sky Stream and Sky Glass subscribers. It features a redesigned user interface, improved navigation options, and upgraded streaming quality on smartphones and tablets.
The app sports a new look inspired by Sky OS, with a matching colour scheme and similar navigation options, allowing users to explore the Best of Sky, Movies, TV shows, Sport and Kids directly from tabs on the home screen.
Sky has replaced the Downloads tab with My Library, which brings shows, movies and sports from your Playlist, recently watched media and downloaded content, together in one convenient place.
You'll also find new movie and TV show pages with more information (including cast and crew details, Rotten Tomatoes scores, and related recommendations), and the ability to save, record or download.
Sky is also improving the interoperability between Stream/Glass and Go with Continue Watching. This essentially allows you to switch between watching on your TV and your phone or tablet seamlessly.
As the name suggests, you can start watching something on your TV and then continue where you left off on your mobile device, and vice versa.
Remote recording is also new, and means users will be able to set a series, film or sporting event to record on their phone while they're on the go, and have it ready and waiting for them when they return home.
However, the biggest upgrade here is that Sky Go is getting a picture upgrade, going from 720p to 1080p, otherwise known as full HD. Sky notes that you'll need a supported device and a strong connection to stream in 1080p, but this should give users a noticeable picture upgrade when streaming on the go.
Finally, a new dedicated Sky Sports section is being added, which highlights live events, upcoming events and anything users have saved to watch later. Furthermore, you will be able to follow your Premier League team and save it in the My Library tab for easy access to matches and content.
The new version of Sky Go will be rolling out to iOS and Android devices soon, and Sky has confirmed that a desktop version for laptops is also in the works.
