Tannoy precision 6.1s - rather nice.
English

After making my last delivery I popped into Richer Sounds, with aim of looking at Blu-Ray players, and noticed they stocked Tannoy range. I asked what they sounded like, and the salesman said: "Follow me." We went upstairs to the dem room and rigged some Precision 6.1 to a Cyrus Lyric 09.

Won't go into boring detail, but looked really smart in a gloss dark wood colour. Sounded quite impressive, especially the detail and low end - produced a lot of welly for the cabinet size. Gut feeling tells me they would benefit from a smoother presentation, like Arcam, Creek etc. etc.

No idea how they compare with PMCs, as it's the first time I've heard Tannoys for gawd knows how long.

Very good though.

Better late than never PP, better late than never.  I've had the 6.1s on my radar for a while now.

You have understand it was heard in isolation (Leema and TBs safe at home, and the Cyrus CDP come streamer come radio, come tea maker was a first-timer for me), t'was purely an off-the-cuff stop. They do look gorgeous, though.

I like the look of the 6.2's and I'm conisidering these floorstanders for an upgrade over my RS6, by which time I'll probably have swapped the pearl lite for a power amp or monoblocs (using audiolab cdq as the pre). Do you know if Audiolab or Marantz would partner the Tannoys well?

If they suit warmer electronics maybe Audiolab power amps would sound a bit too sharp & clinical, for someone who prefers a smoother sounding setup at least?

As I said earlier I had no other speaker or amp to compare it with. However, if I was to guess then perhaps shy away from Cyrus, Audiolab, Leema or any amp that might provoke its detail-laden presentation. But that is a gut feeling not a recommendation.

If buying speakers were based on looks alone, the Tannoys would be near the top of the pile IMHO.

It is a feeling that I agree with. Tannoys have a very clean and controlled presentation, but can get a little bright (for my taste) when paired with a forward sounding amp. Get the match right, and they are excellent.

Interesting. I auditioned the Revolution DC6T SE's driven by the Marantz PM6005/8005, and thought they were a bit harsh, with little bass.

Although couldn't find any real faults on a short dem, somehow just didn't make me sit up. There could be a number of reasons: Firstly, it was on the first floor, and therefore, it was a suspended flooring. Secondly Cyrus and Tannoy may not be a great match. Or thirdly, both.

The best word to describe them based on what I heard today is "nice".

When I heard the Precision 6.1s they sounded gorgeous on the end of some Albarry amplification, but I would imagine they could be a bit too much with some of the brighter amplification out there.  Lovely speakers in the right combination though.

He had a Roksan Kandy BT sitting idle. Wished I'd heard them on that.
