These compact, stylish speaker packages will grace any room and prove you can have great surround sound without having to accommodate lots of big, ugly speakers

There's no substitute for having five physical speakers (and a subwoofer) in your room if you want true surround sound. Yes, we know not everyone can accomodate them – that's why soundbars are so popular – but these compact speaker systems are easier to accommodate than most. And best of all, they sound and look great.

Here we've chosen six of the best, from a very affordable £600 to a somewhat pricier £2400. Whichever package you chose, you won't be disappointed. Those Blu-ray movies are going to sound great.

The Q7000i is a few years old now but it's still able to hold its own in a sea of speaker packages. It looks great and sounds it too. Channels integrate seamlessly and the subwoofer delivers just the right amount of bass.

This Radius package is getting on a bit, but that doesn't mean it's not a talented performer. It makes full use of the company's C-CAM driver technology to create a gapless surround field with crystal clear dialogue and the perfect amount of low-end grunt.

The B&W MT-60D package uses the same satellite speakers as the MT-50 but swaps out that subwoofer for the PV1D found here. The sub has built-in DSP technology that's able to adjust bass levels, whether it be for surround sound or stereo music. Yes it's expensive at nearly two grand, but it's well worth it.

The Monitor Audio Apex package may seem ancient now, but it delivers a truly large-scale sound that registers a sky-high entertainment factor with films. It's quite the dab hand with music too, making it a great all-rounder.
