NEWS: 1080p DVD player from Sony

Proving it's not only Pioneer who can announce new home cinema kit this week, Sony has released details on a new DVD player.

The slimline DVP-NS708H offers 1080p upscaling via its HDMI output, as well as support for Bravia Sync, PhotoTV HD and DivX file playback.

Details remain rather vague – we're working on getting hold of a price from Sony's Press Office – but suffice to say this DVD player looks to do everything you'd expect in the HD age.

There are HDMI and component connections, plus a digital coaxial output for sending audio. As well as upscaling to 720p/1080i/1080p, the DVP-NS708H plays DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW as well as DL discs.

As well as the video aspect, Sony seems keen to push the player's function as a photo viewer, compatible as it is with JPEG images burned on to a CD or DVD as well as the PhotoTV HD software.

Sony's Bravia Sync HDMI control system is naturally supported, while there's a 12bit/108 MHz DAC on board, too.

More information and hopefully a full review to follow.
