CES NEWS: 3M shows its own micro-projector for portable devices

This is 3M's tiny Mobile Projection Technology unit, designed to deliver large-screen images from devices such as mobile phones and personal video players.

It's being demonstrated as part of an Advanced Display Technologies Zone at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, which opens on Mionday in Las Vegas.

Using an advanced liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) electronic imager in conjunction with proprietary 3M optics technology and LED illumination, the projection engine can give an image up to 40in across from a module just half an inch thick.

The company says the unit can deliver VGA resolution, and that it's working with partner companies to bring products to market early this year.
