NEWS: Sony to launch movies on your mobile?

According to reports in the US, Sony Pictures Television is looking to unleash its considerable movie catalogue on to mobile phones.

A rumoured link-up with mobile provider AT&T – the biggest in the States – and MediaFlo USA would see a channel of content, callled PIX, stocked with titles for mobile users to watch on the move.

Sony has signed a deal to deliver two channels of content, including the movie channel PIX, via mobiles. The service would host movies for a month, with new additions coming each week. Pricing of the service is yet to be announced, but is expected to be dependent on the telecoms company rather than Sony, with PIX likely to be sold to other providers in time.

Coincidentally, or not, AT&T is the provider with the exclusive iPhone contract in the US – surely the phone most likely to kick-start any video revolution on mobiles. For slightly hard to fathom reasons, the first releases look set to include The Karate Kid, Layer Cake, Ghostbusters and Philadelphia.

We're certainly starting to see phones in the UK capable of doubling-up as MP3 players, and thanks to the iPhone, it could be the case with video content, too. So, one portable device – the multimedia phone – to rule them all, then?
