A capable, minimalist CD player that is great value for anyone looking to start on their separates journey, the AXC35 has a clear and detailed sound with “pleasing musical cohesion”. The AX35 is part of Cambridge Audio’s AX series of moderately priced hi-fi separates. Just 7.5cm tall, this dainty CD player is similarly proportioned to the five-star AXA35 amplifier, which is part of the same range.

This CD player’s connections keep things simple, and include line outputs and a coaxial digital output. Notably, though, there is no optical output or USB input.

While a remote is included in the box, five circular buttons control key functions on the CD player, which also features a pleasingly bright dot-matrix display.

Cambridge Audio AXC35 build

In our review of the AXC35, we were impressed by its “dynamically adept” performance across frequencies.

Listening to God Particle, from Hans Zimmer’s Angels & Demons soundtrack, we noted that the CD player didn’t “lose its cool over faster time signatures”, delivering sparkling, percussive rhythms alongside foreboding male vocals.

Going big was no problem for the AXC35, either. When we listened to Prince & The NPG’s Diamonds And Pearls, the CD player delivered a suitably raucous performance that left us feeling satisfied.

Overall, the Cambridge AXC35 CD player has a clear, detailed sound, and performs capably for its price. Easily integrating into home set-ups thanks to its slim build, this player could soon be finding a place in your system for just £299 from Amazon, Cambridge Audio and Richer Sounds.
