Sony, while announcing its Crystal LED (CLED) display, has claimed that OLED technology uses organic materials & will decay fast.

Wikipedia mentions the same thing.

Have Samsung & LG overcome this yet? 5 years is too short a span to consider OLED as a viable option.

I was not aware of this. I thought the only issue with OLED was cost.

Which manufacturer was it recently who siad 'we will not be making OLEDs'?

For consumers perhaps, but i've been sat in front of a Sony PVM 25 inch OLED for the last 2 weeks and it is absolutely stunning, (better than the 24" Sony HD CRT it replaced and that was pretty spectacular).

Yes they do look very good; but if that picture will fade over a few years into mediocrity...

Personally I wouldn't buy a set I knew I'd have to replace in 5 years. Hopefully they can sort it out or at least extend the life, as I agree they do look great.

I have heard that blue doesnt have a good life span, but never thought beyond that. LGs new 55" OLED at CES has white OLEDs with a colour filter. Due out this year it'll be interesting to read owners thoughts in 2013.

Then in 2018 you buy a new set.Smile Most things aren't built to last now anyway and if you're an early adopter, you're likely willing to buy another within 5 years anyway. Im liking the look of the Sony CLED anyway, hope by the time I want a new set they'll be available at a reasonable price, thinking 2016-17?
