BSkyB announces rise in profits and subscribers helped by HD

The company now boasts 9.4 million customers and pointed to the doubling of households that signed-up for HD content over the last year - now up to 1.3 million.

BSkyB also saw a 60% year-on-year increase in the number of customers taking the combined offering of TV, broadband and Talk, helping to take the average yearly spend up to a record £464.

Chief Executive Jeremy Darroch said: "Sky+HD is already Europe's leading HD platform and we plan to grow it further. We will expand the choice of content from 33 channels today to 50 channels over time, starting with ESPN HD next month and Sky News HD next spring."

Rivals had also managed to attract customers in the downturn, with Virgin Media now having 3.6 million subscribers, while BT Vision has around 500,000.
