Toshiba launches 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series TVs for 2014
Toshiba has launched its new range of TVs for 2014. The line-up features four new series – 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series – with screen sizes from 24in to 55in.
The flagship Toshiba L74 television (pictured, above) features new CEVO Audio and CEVO Picture technologies, promising fuller, more expansive sound and "75% brighter" pictures.
There are no Ultra HD sets in the line-up, though rumours suggest a launch later in the year for 4K models – possibly known as the 8 and 9 Series.
The Toshiba 2014 TVs start with the 3 Series, which is set to be the first set of new TVs available and will sit above the existing budget 1 and 2 Series. The 1 and 2 series will continue this year.
Billed as the "affordable and feature-packed smart TV range", the L3, W3 and D3 models are available in 24, 32, 40 and 48in screen sizes.
Toshiba 3 Series
All the Toshiba 3 Series sets have Freeview HD tuners, offer access to smart TV content including BBC iPlayer and Netflix and include HDMI and USB inputs (the latter, for playing media content).
The L3 sports a full HD resolution , AMR+ 200 motion processing and comes in 40in (direct LED) and 48in (edge LED) incarnations. The W3 is an HD Ready LED set, has AMR+ 100 processing and is a 32in set.
The D3 sports the same specs as the W3 but adds a built-in DVD player. There are 24in, 32in (edge LED) and 40in (direct LED) models. The 3 Series is due this month (March).
Toshiba 5 Series
Step up to the L54 and you get improvements to the picture technology and the addition of active-shutter 3D.
The motion processing steps up to AMR+ 400 (in 3D mode, AMR+ 200 in 2D), claiming to offer smoother motion and more detail, while the edge LED set gets active-shutter 3D and 2D-to-3D conversion.
Connections include three HDMI, one USB and PC input, there's also built-in WiFi, Dolby Digital Plus support and Freeview HD.
The L54 TV comes in 40in and 48in screen sizes and is set to become available in April.
Toshiba 6 Series
Make the jump to the 6 Series and you'll get an upgraded smart TV experience, Toshiba Smart TV Cloud, PVR functionality if you connect an external HDD via USB, a more powerful dual-core processing engine, DTS Premium Sound and increased connectivity. The 6 Series isn't 3D.
Four HDMI inputs (one with MHL support for phones and tablets), two USB inputs and Intel WiDi (which allows you to share content wirelessly from compatible laptops) are also on board.
Available in 42in and 47in direct LED TV options, the Toshiba 6 Series is due in June. No prices as yet but Toshiba claims the range offers "advanced features at a competitive price point".
Toshiba 7 Series
The L74 Series is the flagship Toshiba TV for 2014 (until any 4K sets are revealed). It's a full HD, direct LED set with passive 3D technology. Four pairs of passive 3D glasses are included.
CEVO Picture and Audio make an appearance on this range, as does the company's top-notch AMR+ 1500 picture processing.
Carried over from the 6 Series is the Smart TV Cloud interface, dual-core engine, PVR via USB functionality, Freeview HD and the same number of key connections.
The 7 Series is available in 42in, 47in and 55in screen sizes. Again, no word on prices as yet.
We're aiming to get a review sample of the flagship Toshiba 7 Series very soon.
