From today, the HDMI 1.4 cable is dead

From today, cable manufacturers can no longer describe cables as HDMI 1.4, 1.3 or using any other version number or compliance test specification indication.
The changes, announced some time ago, come into effect today, and mean manufacturers must now remove all references to those numbers from their products and packaging, not to mention no longer using them in promotion.
From now on, there are just five descriptions allowed, and these are mandatory on both cables and packaging:
- Standard HDMI Cable
- Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet
- Standard Automotive HDMI Cable
- High Speed HDMI Cable
- High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet
HDMI Licensing says that 'In order to enforce the cable market and ensure that only compliant HDMI cables are sold in the market, HDMI Licensing, LLC has been working with Custom and Border Protection agencies in the US, Europe and China.
'These agencies will evaluate imported and exported HDMI cable products based on their compliance with all aspects of the Adopter Agreement including these latest marketing requirements.'

Is there any reason the Belkin HDMI range have not been tested?
I know Currys is hardly a HiFi specialist but it is handy for me!
All HDMI cables are equal, but some are more equal than others...
aliEnRIK, I have to agree, in a couple of years we'll have Super Duper Extra High Speed Express HDMI.
Thankyou, Andrew, for the clarification. So let me get this straight, there is one, or maybe two now, labelling systems for components and one labelling system for cables. So now the consumer is even more confused as to which cable to use for which component.
Confusion is King!
As I said, absolutely useless!
This is rubbish. When the next higher rated bandwidth cable comes what then? SUPER speed HDMI. Utter garbage........
Because, chrisr1718, that labelling still applies to components such as TVs, BD players, etc., but not to cables.
and when you go on the HDMI Licensing website, what does the home page banner say...
'HDMI 1.4 One Global Standard'
They can't even get there own house in order!! Absolutely useless!
I'm sure UK Customs has nothing better to do with their time than test the specs and labeling of each HDMI cable that arrives on our shores. Oh well at least the price of drugs will go down as the Market becomes flooded- it is a recession you know. Every little helps.
It's actually a good thing since a cable which is guaranteed to transfer 1080p (i.e. an old 1.3 cable) is a High Speed cable and can also therefore carry 3D and the Audio Return Channel (i.e. the supposedly "new" 1.4 cable). So this should eventually prevent unscrupulous (or more likely ignorant) salesmen from selling more HDMI cables to people who don't need them.
However, the whole HDMI standards team should be shot for making this whole thing so complicated in the first place, which means some consumers will undoubtedly be duped. That and making a cable which doesn't have a clip to prevent it from falling out (grrr!).
I best stop smuggling HDMI leads across US borders. What tosh.
Wouldn't expect this to catch on too quickley i work in a hifi store and this is the first ive been told about it!
As well as talking to chord today and the new description came up (high speed with ethernet)
all i got as an answer was it's a standard v1.4 HDMI and no different from their v1.3 HDMI"S
Go figure?
what does that make my qed 1.3s now ,standard hdmis or high speed hdmis?
Im worried about the environment!
All that text, the box will need to be 30cm wide.
Then you'll need an explanation of the word'ETHERNET'then printouts for all the Saturday staff to understand which one does which, then a councelling helpline for people who have just paid 200 for a Monster one.
Then 'You'll need a 3D TV, Internet Connection, 3DTV player and a big bag to carry it all home' will need to fit somewhere.
Apparently if you don't buy a 'highspeed' one all you're films are in slow motion. 12FPS!! So you have to buy the longest sounding one!
The World is lost.....
Apparently they love 3d tv !!!
Flippin' heck! Ain't that typical - just when we thought we understood what version of an HDMI cable did what, along comes another bureaucratic body sticking it's unwanted nose in and confusing the picture... what does the US Border Protection Agency have to do with AV cables anyway? Nonsense!
