At last! Today sees the launch of the digital edition of What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision.

After almost 35 years as a printed magazine, we are now also available to read on your PC, Mac, or iPad (Android support imminent) – wherever you are in the world.

With easy to use, helpful features – such as active website links, quick navigation, simple zoom/scroll – you're getting more than just an online copy of each issue.

And here's how to get hold of it.

What you'll need

You'll need to download Zinio's digital magazine reader – either online on your PC or Mac or by downloading the free Zinio App.

Some new Android devices come preloaded with the Zinio App, which will soon be more widely available.

You can then buy individual magazines – or subscriptions – as/when you want (to buy a single issue, simply click on the 'buy the current edition' link on this page).

What it costs

Each digital edition costs a basic £2.99 (plus VAT/sales tax), or just £29.30 for a 13-issue subscription.

That's a major saving on the usual cover price – especially for our overseas readers

No wait for your issue!

The issues will go live on Zinio on the day the magazine hits UK shops – again, that means our international readers won't have to wait to enjoy each edition.

Contents Spread in Zinio

Above is how our June issue's contents spread looks like in Zinio's desktop digital reader.

Zoom into that spread (see below) and you'll see that each page reference in the contents is active, allowing you to jump straight to that article.

Get straight to the reviews you want to read

Again, within tests – such as our TV Supertest – the list of tested kit at the beginning of the feature allows you to jump ahead directly to the review you most want to read.

Discover more online

As well as offering live links within the issue, the digital edition also makes every website reference an active hyperlink – allowing you to click straight through to relevant online information.

This will include links to content here on Whathifi.com via our editorial pages, but also web content mentioned on the magazine's advertising pages.

Feedback please!

We hope you enjoy our new edition – however and wherever you choose to view it.

We'll be adding new subscription options and extra features in the future – please give us any feedback so we can make the experience even better.

One more wish for back issues  Kiss

Hi,

I am not UK citizen and I live in Dubai, so to whome and why would I pay VAT? We don't even have tax in Dubai so it does not make much sense to me.

Sorry, browser got crazy, posted it twice Smile

Just bought my first digital edition on my shiny new iPad. Works a treat.

Does the subscription give access to past issues and if not do you plan to add it in the future?

Not as yet: never say never, but there are no plans along these lines at the moment.

The article talks of how to download the (digital) magazine but then says "you get more than an online magazine". So, is the magazine actually downloaded or is it a case of only being able to read it online via Zinio, which I assume is the access/payment portal?

The magazine can either be downloaded for offline reading or read online, but in either case it is read via the Zinio reader software.

So how about existing subscribers to the printed edition. Is the digital edition free? Discounted?

As already mentioned, we are working on a variety of subscription packages, allowing readers to select either print or digital edition, or a combination of both. But no, the digital edition won't be free for existing print subscribers.

Downloaded it yesterday, a few glitches with paypal payment with Zinio - will it be able to be purchased via apple or is that too expensive.  That aside, enjoyed reading it on ipad very much, plus bonus of being able to look at on mac

Downloaded the issue on MAC albeit one or teething issues but that aside the Zino works quite well.

However I've spotted a MAJOR OMISSION .... when viewing pages 60 and 61 you are unable to rotate the pages to portrait.

So how do you rotate pages in Zino? I'm using a MAC.

Comment passed on to our production people...

Can we get multiple copies of an issue for the one price? e.g: A copy for my pc and one for my phone?

Once you have a Zinio account, you can read any magazine you buy on all platforms you own, all you have to do is download the software, login to your account and all magazines will appear.

Hi,

I've just downloaded the magazine on iPad and I think it's brilliant! More or less instant download without any hassle - good job!

One thing I did notice though was the fact that the colours on the pages didn't look quite a vibrant as I thought they would, almost as if they'd had the saturation knocked down. Compared the magazine with is really vibrant the iPad version just seemed a bit muted. As i said it's a minor thing!

Apart from that it's perfect - will be subscribing later today!

Well that was easy!

My first digital issue downloaded to my PC.

Looking again at Zinio's site you appear to be listed solely under Film magazines in the Entertainment section, rather than under the Electronics section of Science and Tech section, this would seem not to be the best place to be listed to gain more readers.

Agreed, but this is Day One, and something we'll have to take up with Zinio.

zinio app for android, not available comming soon.

As linked to in the blog above, the Android app is available now as a pre-load on several new Android tablets (includng Dell and Samsung), ahead of the general release of the Zinio Android App.

Here's the link again:

oh silly me, ill rush out and buy an new tablet or phone just for it.

it lists only 4 devices 2 of which arent avaliable perieod in the UK and i suspect wont come on non carrier branded ones anyway (as they ususally dont with come with the same rubbish ware intsalled on them)

sorry a great mag but i think youd be better simply say coming soon to android rather than imply its available now when to practically everyone with an android device its not.

Don't think the sarcasm is necessary! Or indeed the point re the UK: this is an international release. Will clarify further in the blog, though

I'm confused about the prices / savings they are quoting...

A year's subscription on Zinio costs £29.30 (+VAT, currently 20%) - i.e. £35.16

The cover price of WHFS&V is £4.50 (VAT inclusive) - which for 13 editions makes £58.50, or £48.75 before VAT - but Zinio quotes the price as £43.88?

Am I missing something?

I think you're complaining that it's even more of a bargain than Zinio is stating, but I will seek clarification...

I suppose I am! Embarassed

While I know it is a limitation of Zinio, not yourselves, it would be nice if there were an intermediate price on subs, Zinio currently offers either single issue or Full Year, would be nice to have quarterly as well.

I am a print subscriber currently, and would switch, but paying for all my mags in one hit is proving rather expensive on my shiny new ipad!

Thanks for the feedback. We're working on offering our own subscription options - as well as those available via Zinio - so i'll let the subs team know of your request.

Is there going to be a extra charge for the downloaded version if you are already subscribe, thanks

Yes, there will be, but as Clare has mentioned above, we are working on our own subscriptions access, and our plan is that this will include 'hybrid' subs packages combining both print and digital versions.
