Beyerdynamic DT770 review

A closed-back design with a neutral tone and a pleasing balance. They suffer, though, with clarity and resolution Tested at £190.00

Our Verdict

Decent enough if you must have closed-back headphones, but there are better cans at the price

  • Closed-back design
  • powerful sound
  • very comfortable

  • Rivals offer more insight, detail and overall resolution

The first thing to point out here is that the DT770s are a closed-back design. This means sound doesn't escape through the outside of each earphone – so you won't annoy your neighbour on the train the way you would with a noisier, open-backed design.

But it also means a more coloured and less impressive performance: yes, the tonal balance is broadly neutral, and there's a pleasing balance about the presentation. However, when it comes to clarity and resolution, the DT770s suffer.

The DT770s blur detail where their stablemates brush it up for inspection. Dynamics aren't so expressive, either, so a significant chunk of the emotional impact of Shostakovich's String Quartet No.8 is lost.

Bass isn't enough
True, bass power is impressive, and Eminem fans may be entertained. However, the lack of definition and overall clarity means that musical interest is rarely held for long.

There is no denying that the closed-back design means that these will work in situations where other headphones won't. But if sound quality is paramount to you, there really are better options around at this sort of money.
