Samsung 2014 TVs: sizes, prices, specs

11 Mar 2014

Samsung certainly caught our attention at CES 2014 in Las Vegas as it unveiled the world's first 85in curved TV, but the company was also there to reveal its line-up of new TVs for 2014. Here are all the specs and other details we know so far.

While there was no word from Samsung on whether its bendy TV was destined for production, the company did promise another world first would be coming to the market this year.

Samsung's line-up for 2014 will feature the world's largest Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV at 110in and the world's first and largest Curved UHD TV at 105in among others.

According to Samsung, it has developed an optimal curvature of 4200R to provide the best picture quality from a distance of 3-4m and to create the "ultimate immersive viewing experience".

Samsung's Auto Depth Enhancer technology also features and will automatically adjust contrast for a greater sense of depth and give an almost 3D-like effect without glasses.

Meanwhile, Samsung says that all of its UHD TVs are future-ready thanks to its UHD Evolution Kit – in addition to supporting today's standards such as HEVC, HDMI 2.0 and more.

The UHD Evolution Kit will let viewers upgrade their sets if 4K specification changes, while a new Quad Core processor will make Samsung's Smart TV experience much faster.

Following CES, we've been treated to a special presentation outlining some more of the features and specifications for this year's sets. So what's new?

Smart Hub

Besides more advanced, smarter hub pages for TV, movies and apps which will be able to recommend even more tailored content, 2014 sees the introduction of two new panels in Samsung's Smart Hub. First there's Multimedia, for popular online content and for accessing any connected devices. The second panel is Games, which allows you to access various games for Samsung's platform which can be controlled through the TV and by the Smart Control.

Multi-Link

Allows for dual view, e.g. watch a TV programme and surf the web simultaneously. Samsung even claims someone could be watching TV while another person watches content from an app such as Netflix. Audio from Netflix could be sent via Bluetooth to a pair of headphones.

Smart Control

Certain sets now come with a new-look Smart Control, which features a new shape, built-in gyro sensors and newly designed touch pad.

Smart Interaction 3.0

Now in its third generation, in 2014 you'll be able gesture controls using just one finger. Commands will include the ability to change channel and volume. The TV analyzes crowd noise levels to determine when recording should start.

Twin Tuner

Not a new feature, but offers more flexibility in 2014, including the ability to watch two different channels (including content from a connected device, e.g. Blu-ray player) and record one of them or watch one channel and record two others.

Smart View 2.0

Instead fo having to use two different apps to share content (including watching live TV) between a TV and your handheld device it's now combined into just one app.

Football Mode

If you have a hard drive connected to certain Samsung sets, Football Mode will allow you to record the highlights from football matches. The TV analyses the noise from the crowd to help it decide when to record. (We're just trying to get confirmation from Samsung if/how this model will work for other sports.)
