Disney to buy Lucasfilm and release new Star Wars film in 2015

30 Oct 2012

So, George Lucas is selling Lucasfilm, maker of the Star Wars films, to The Walt Disney Company for $4bn (£2.05bn) in cash and shares. And there's to be a new, seventh Star Wars film in 2015, with two more to follow after that.

Lucasfilm, which is 100 per cent owned by Lucas, will join Disney’s portfolio of brands including, ESPN, Pixar, Marvel and ABC.

George Lucas says that he is passing on Star Wars to a new generation of filmmakers. “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” he says.

“I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”

Disney's chief executive, Robert Iger, adds: "Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas.

"This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney's unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value."

The emperor's new deathstar..

Let's face facts.... Although we have George Lucas to thank for the original creation of the Star Wars universe as we know it, we also have him to blame for some of the lamest turkeys in film history - Episode 1 is a travesty!

On balance Disney's hit rate is significantly better and they have deep enough pockets to do the franchise justice.....

And think of the spin-off possibilities....

Beauty and Chewbacca

Finding Greedo

The Lightsabre in the Stone.....

You get the idea Wink

"I'm Already on my way out..." Vwap Vwap Vwap.

But it will have the high school musical style songs and cast

this is not good ...

Luke: "Look at him. He's headed for that small moon." Han: "I think I can get him before he gets there. He's almost in range." Obi-Wan: "That's no moon. It's a space station!" Han: "It's too big to be a space station." Luke: "I have a very bad feeling about this." Obi-Wan: "Turn the ship around." Han: "Yeah, I think your right. Full reverse! Chewie, lock in the auxiliary power." Chewbacca: "(Grrs)" Luke: "Why are we still moving towards it?" Han: "We're caught in a tractor beam! It's pulling us in!" Luke: "But there's gotta be something you can do!" Han: "There's nothin' I can do about it, kid. I'm in full power. I'm going to have to shut down. But they're not going to get me without a fight." Obi-Wan: "You can't win. But there are alternatives to fighting."

Probably the best thing to happen to Star Wars since the first movie.  There's already a great divide amongst fans about the direction Star Wars has taken.  I think the bottom line (other than Disney making their money back), is that the Star Wars universe will finally expand the way it should have - on the big screen.

Star Trek managed to create a regular movie stream, whilst satisfying the majority of fans.  The only one thing stopping it happening with Star Wars was the genius who created it.

The old generation of fans (such as myself), will always have the original trilogy, fond memories of the summer of 77, etc), but we can embrace or turn away from the new stuff - it's all optional.  I for one am very excited about the idea of new movies and no doubt will have my criticism, but it means one thing to the fans:

The Force will be with us... always.

Just when you thought you had finally bought all the movies here we go again this is ridiculous

And if Disney are going to make these movies lets hope they don't make a mess of it like they did John carter.

i thought that was the clone wars

Episode 7 in 2015.  8 & 9 to follow and then a new movie every 2/3 years.

So THE event of a Star Wars film will pale and it will be turned into a tv mini[maxi] series.  Not for me.

The Force in NOT strong with this one!

So do I - see my comment in the forums...

You feel a disturbance in the force do you?

I have a bad  feeling about this...
