CEDIA NEWS: Infinity and JBL subwoofers go wireless

We're used to wi-fi in our laptops, mobiles and occasionally rear speakers in home cinema systems, but now Infinity and sister company JBL have gone one further by launching their first wireless subwoofers.

The Infinity PS212W is described as "a high-performance subwoofer that combines superlative low-frequency performance with wireless connectivity".

The PS212W includes a compact transmitter/receiver module that operates on the 2.4GHz frequency range and offers a choice of four selectable channels to ensure interference-free operation.

The module connects to an AV amp or receiver (or other audio source) and sends signals to a wireless transceiver built into the subwoofer.

The subwoofer itself has a built-in 400w amplifier and a 12-inch woofer. It also has continuously variable crossover frequency and level controls, and a phase switch to optimise bass performance in any system or room. It costs $679.

JBL has a similar device, the JBL Cinema Sound CSS10W, with a 300w amp and 10-inch woofer. It will be available from January 2008 for $559.
