Congratulations to Mordaunt-Short, whose handsome Mezzo range includes this (slightly) unusually shaped, beautifully finished subwoofer.
The Mezzo 9 packs hefty amplification, two drivers firing in opposite directions and a very useful remote-control-cum-sound-pressure-meter.
The over-complicated user interface on top of the machine is less successful, mind you. In action, the 9 is fearsomely loud and forceful.
It's not the most clinical subwoofer we've ever heard, but it's far from being a blunt instrument – it's a detailed, articulate speaker and its improbable volume levels can set a whole room resonating in sympathy. In terms of sheer clout and presence, it's prodigious
