When it comes to sound, nobody knows more than Sennheiser – and with its Ambeo range there’s a soundbar that suits everybody, no matter how much space there is underneath your TV or how big your living room is.

Not only will all three products transform the audio performance of your television, they also all support Dolby Atmos, so whether you pick the Ambeo Max, Ambeo Plus or Ambeo Mini, your room will be filled with incredible and immersive 3D sound.

The most popular size for a TV in the UK is between 40 and 60 inches, which makes the five-star Ambeo Plus the perfect partner. Despite being smaller than a lot of its rivals, the Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus can still deliver a full 7.1.4 soundtrack from its compact chassis, with nine, multi-directional drivers inside to make sure the sound reaches every nook and cranny.

Feed it a Dolby Atmos or DTS:X signal and those speakers will envelop you in a cocoon of sound and replicate the 3D soundstage seen on the screen, so you’ll be able to hear exactly where every single sound is coming from, whether it’s a jet swooping overhead, or a mysterious creature sneaking up from the side. Ambeo Virtualisation can even take stereo recordings and make them more immersive and room-filling.

Push it to the Max

Those with more space to fill should consider the bigger, more powerful Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Max, which was recently crowned Best Soundbar over £1500 at the 2023 What Hi-Fi? Awards, and will be available for a reduced price of £1799 until 31 December.

This BFG of a soundbar has a whopping 13 individual drivers inside – five tweeters, six woofers and two that fire from the top – that combine to deliver a full 5.1.4 experience that’ll get the most out of any Dolby Atmos or DTS:X soundtrack. It even comes with a separate microphone that you use during setup to ensure everything is calibrated correctly.

Its three HDMI inputs and one output make it perfect for people with lots of kit to plug in, such as games consoles and 4K Blu-ray players, and like the rest of the Ambeo range it’s easy to control with the Smart Control app.

No limits

Even if space is more limited, choosing the Sennheiser Ambeo Mini means you don’t have to sacrifice sound quality for size.

Despite being the smallest in the Ambeo range – it measures just 70cm across – the Mini still has plenty of power, with a 250-watt, Class D amplifier, four full-range drivers and two subwoofers onboard. Combined with its special processing powers, it can decode 3D audio formats including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X and deliver impressively immersive sound from such a small unit. There’s even one-touch calibration to make setting it up as simple as possible.

Like the Ambeo Plus, it also has AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and Bluetooth onboard, so you can also connect portable devices to stream video or audio wirelessly.

Bass: the final frontier

All three Ambeo soundbars deliver weighty bass that will have real impact on what you’re watching, but if you really want to feel that low-end oomph you can always add the Sennheiser Ambeo Sub

It requires a cable to work with the Ambeo Max, but can be connected wirelessly to the Ambeo Plus and Mini, adding 350 watts of bass-pushing power. It calibrates itself using a built-in far-field microphone, using its 8in woofer to produce bass that you can feel as well as hear for a truly cinematic experience.

No matter which of the Ambeo family you opt for you can guarantee you’ll get the kind of immersive audio experience that’ll make you feel like you’re part of whatever you’re watching – and all from just a single box.
