I too have a Fiio D3 DAC and I could tell absolutely no difference between it and an Arcam rDAC, apart from about £250.

My 'cheap setup' - I have two standmount speakers sharing the same stands, one for hifi - one for home cinema.

As I would like floorstanders eventually, I was too tight to buy another pair of stands so I cut up some old slate and bolted them to the top of each stand. The speakers sit on top about 1cm apart.

 

Sonically they sound fine to me.

Marantz 2060ML is so purdy. Has some titanium tone to it.

Only when the (camera) flash goes off, otherwise matt black only. Still works a treat and sounds fabulous given it was used on a daily basis since 1979.

Here's the set-up (2012) with the Leema, Arcam and RS6s.

Lots of shiny silvery bits in that fine setup. I'm catching up and soon I'll be able to shave on every hi-fi component I own.

Pair of Fostex PM0.4n running off an Icon HDP as a preamp and DAC. Sounds far better than it has any right to. Will eventually upgrade the speakers to some better active monitors at some point, but I'm enjoying them a lot at the moment.

Didn't you get the memo? All Cables, DACs, CD players and amps sound the same.
