with £5000 in cash weighing down your pockets and the OK to buy whatever you wanted, what you would you buy?
Linn MDS + Sugden A21 SE + Kef LS50
"We should no more let numbers define audio quality than we should let chemical analysis be the arbiter of fine wines." Nelson Pass
A custom built PC as the source.
A secondhand Yamaha RX-V667 receiver with analogue 'pre-outs' so that it can be used with active speakers.
Five AVI ADM9RSS speakers and an AVI 10" subwoofer used in a 5.1 surround sound setup.
Hi-Fi - Nakamichi Dragon AV1 > AVI DM5 > AVI subwoofer
Head-Fi - Epiphany Acoustics EHP-O2Di > Sennheisser HD700
Portable - Sony NWZ-A847 > Westone UM3x
No idea. It'd depend on where I was living. Some good speakers, a flexible source, something that'd let me make the most of HD Master Audio, maybe some big Genelecs, and a second traditional system.
EDIT: Started again and loving it!
Lavardin IS Reference amplifier & Harbeth HLP3ESR Speakers
I would spin back the wheel of time to just before I bought a Naim Nait 5i/CD5i/NAT05/nSats system in March 2009, and then (with 20/20 hindsight of course) wait patiently until Naim launched their first NaimUniti.
With your generous £5000 (thanks mate) I would have had enough to partner the 'Uniti with a pair of Harbeth P3ESRs.
If memory serves correctly, I would still have had £1500 left over from that budget to afford to re-decorate the living room and have a nice gourmet weekend for two at Gidleigh Park hotel with my wife. (Do-able at their 2009 prices.)
Thanks again for the £5000 - and the loan of the time machine - to 'start again'. (And the food was excellent.)
iPad Mini 3 (128GB) • Bowers & Wilkins P3 • Mac Mini • AirPort Extreme • AirPlay • iTunes • Marantz M-CR603 • Rega R3
Couldn't work with 5K lol!... might do for a second system of Sugden A21, Harbeth P3's and an old Marantz 63i.
Electrocompaniet EMC1UP, Sonos Connect, Accuphase E350, Harbeth SHL5 Siltech 25th anniversary 33i XLR, Auditorium 23 SC, HiFi Racks Podium Reference rack, matching LS stands.
Would go the active speakers route, probably ATC`s but would need to add a bit to the 5 grand !!
Probably would start by trying a Naim Uniti 2 and some PMC twenty:23.
But if I had some time to spend, then maybe a Prima Luna amp and some Sonus faber Venere 2.5. Then again, I've never owned panels, so maybe some Magnepans. Or perhaps just a Unitilite and some Guru Juniors or KEF LS50s, and the rest on NAS, downloads and some neat cabling...
Or a 50% deposit on a Devialet amp, and raid my pension and savings for the rest of the system. Now we're talking... :rockout:
Krell CD and amp, Michell/Rega/Grado record player, Hitachi and Sony tuners, Nakamichi cassette, SBT streamer, Sonus faber spkrs. Sony and Samsung BDP & TVs. Qobuz > iPad > AudioPro Allroom Air One
Musical Fidelity M6i, Audiolab 8200cd and B&W CM8. Even though I own two of these now, starting from scratch, thats where I would be.........hmmm just need to save for that amp, when I have finished moving house, buying new furniture, saving for daughters uni time etc etc

ADM9RSS + ADM Sub, taller stands and the rest on music.
