When we started testing this home cinema package, we didn't know its price.

The What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision team threw around varying guesses, but it's testament to the quality of the LG system that most of these were significantly higher than the eventually provided price of £270. That's cracking value.

For a start, you get a lot of plastic for your money. Those tall satellites might reveal their humble materials upon close inspection, but when viewed in situ, they look far more expensive than they are. The head unit and centre speaker are compact and neat, and the subwoofer is chunkier than the price suggests.

Set-up is a little tedious, due to a test tone that'll only cycle around all the speakers (you can't repeat just one speaker to get it right).

Yet, once this is done, performance is excellent. The surround field is pleasingly enveloping, with details well placed within. That hefty subwoofer is a little bit over-exaggerated and sluggish, but the relative lack of punch is a fair trade-off for weight.

LG offers a princely picture
DVDs also look very good, with the images – upscaled to 1080i – looking nearly as good as those from the best of the sub-£100 stand-alone DVD players we've seen.

Do the maths: this is a very impressive package for just £270.
