Can you get Virgin broadband in your area? I think that's the only way you might get a big improvement.

Try contacting Orange and complain about your slow speed. They should run tests on your line and see if line settings can be improved at the exchange and on your modem settings.

Of course the further away from the exchange the slower the speed. Also ensure your house 'mains supply' is as clean as possible as mains borne inteference has a big effect with Computers, modems and transfer speeds.

Good luck

Do you have the broadband modem/router plugged into the master socket? It can double your speed if the extension wiring isn't great.

Take a look at this for some more tips

Hope this helps.

Andy, try http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk to get an accurate picture of current speed. Then answer the questions related to "What is the maximum speed I can get" for an idea of the maximum speed you are likely to get given you exchange and the distance you are from that exchange.

If you can get higher than 1Mb that should let you know and help you find a provider.ÿ

You want one of these. My colleague's home connection went up from 3.5MB to 6.8MB just by putting it in.

Obviously, it depends how bad your connection is as to how much it improves it, but if you can only get 1MB, then it's gotta be worth a punt...

Hi the Iplate is ok but maybe the adsl nation pre filtered face plate is better.

Also have you tried plugging in your router into your BT master socket/ test socket?

Re: How to improve my Internet connection

We've had similar problems with broadband speed / reliability. Suggest you plug in your wireless modem into the main phone socket if you've not done already, as suggested by kingdave.

Also, try connecting your computer directly to the modem via an ethernet cable and then running a speed test. If there's a big jump in improvement you know it's not the line but a slow wireless speed.

Our problem was only resolved when a BT engineer replaced our phone line socket which had dodgy wiring from a previous attempt to extend the phone line upstairs. Then we found out that our wireless modem needed replacing anyway... BT, b****dy BT!!!!!!!!!!

Re: How to improve my Internet connection

Just a quick update for anyone tearing their hair out because of slow wireless broadband speeds. We now have a new router and no longer experience dial up speeds.

Most (all?) routers default to wirelessly transmit on channel 1 so lots of routers in a block of flats potentially will interfer with each other. By trial and error, we've changed this channel and the problem has instantly gone away. After 10 months of slow, unreliable wireless connectivity to say we're pleased is an understatement ; )

Another tip - I had terrible issues with broadband being slow or non-existent, and Virgin went so far as to send me a new cable modem to use instead of through the STB. Didn't make a jot of difference, until I changed the DNS servers on the router to point at more reliable ones, instead of rubbish Virgin ones - look up OpenDNS, and use their servers instead of default ones which may be provided or automatically picked up from your ISP.

I just bought a BT I-Plate and it made absolutely no difference to the sync speeds.
