The Humax ‘Fox on the box' has long been one of our favourites: it's a neat and tidy design that boasts better-than-average build and half-decent aesthetics. It comes armed with twin Scart sockets together with composite and S-Video outputs.

Fine with footie
The picture quality is highly impressive. There's never any distortion, whatever you watch: edges are rendered cleanly and motion is taken in its stride. That makes football – with which many Freeview receivers struggle – a joy to watch: players are immediately recognisable (and not just by the numbers on their shirts!).

It shines with films, too: it's easy to pick out details in the picture, even in dark scenes, and colours are rich yet subtly handled.

That you get such performance for just £70 makes this a bargain in anyone's language – there's even an optical digital output, so you can connect it to your AV receiver. Whether you're looking for a box for a 20in CRT or for a 50in plasma, this is the one. What more do you want from a digital set-top box?
