Stereo sound missing on LP's
English

Hi

First post after quite some dwelling around in this place.

I seem to have a problem with my TT, being that on some of my records (not all) I only get a sound signal in the right speaker.

I have checked the weight and anti-skate and crosschecked with some other of my records but they do not seem to have the problem.

What things should I check?

Thanks!

Will it happen to a whole LP or just certain tracks?

Is it intermittent?

If it happens with 100 percent predictability to only certain LPs, which ones? (A few examples.)

It seems to have happened for the entire Side A of my Franz Ferdinand record.

It did not happen on the first song of "Fleet Foxes", but did on the later tracks.

I did not get this when playing an old live Doors record.

I have only just noticed, I'll try and see what other records do.

Ok. Seems to me it's a flaky connection to one of the cartridge pins or (possibly) in the L ch. phono plug

Ok,

I'm fiddling around a bit and decreased the needle pressure (2,5 instead of the recommended 3).

This seems to help, does this mean anything? Can anyone explain this to me technically so I understand what's happening?

I will not start cheering quite yet since I already tried this before and the issue returned after a couple of songs.

Thanks

Do you have the same issue when using the USB connection? If so it almost certainly is due to a loose connection in the arm wiring,  as the  contributors above suggested. If not, then it could be the connection between the TT and the amplifier.

You should get a cheap stylus downforce balance to double check exactly what downforce you have on that stylus.

What cartridge do you have fitted?

It could possibly be a fault in the cartridge itself but more likely a wiring problem.

Can you beg, borrow, or steal a different cartridge and try that?

Where did you get TT from originally?

I got it from my dad as he replaced his by another.

I do not know if it's the original cartridge (but I think it is) so I should be able to look up what it is.

I'll recheck the wires when I get home and report back, I do not think I have the ability to swap cartridges (not that many friends into HiFi).

Thanks for the suggestions!

It would appear to be a Audio-Technica AT-3600-L cartridge...

ATT10U is quite a complex device with phono outputs, a built in pre-amp (iirc) and a USB socket for direct connection to a computer. This complicates the diagnosis somewhat because there's more links in the chain, but it doesn't make it impossible. It's still just a matter of working through it a step at a time. For a start, when you next lose a channel, lift the tone arm and with the volume LOW see if you still get a buzzing through the 'dead' speaker when you gently touch the wires behind the headshell. If you don't, well that rules out the cartridge for starters.

RE: Stereo sound missing on LP's

Have you asked your Dad about this problem? Did it happen when he used it? How old is the deck?  Have the cartridge and the thin connector wires been disturbed? If they aren't fully onto the pins of the cartridge, you can gently but firmly push them on, using tweezers. Have you tried swapping the speakers over, to see if the problem moves too?

Does backing the antiskate to minimum have any effect?

it looks like the deck has a removable headshell, so have you checked the connections there?  Does the fault occur when playing the first few tracks, or the last two or three? If the latter, it could be the internal wires of the arm.

Good luck.

RE: Stereo sound missing on LP's

Just to let you know that after some time fiddling aroudn I've taken down the tracking force and have seen an improvement.

I do get some issues on the first few songs, but this seems to stop when turning my connection-inpts on the amp.

I do not really understand what causes this (except from a bad contact) and would like to know if it's the TT, amp or cable causing the problem.

Any suggested method to really determine?

Thanks

The only way you'll find out is to systematically replace each component until you find the problem, from what you say about turning the connections on the amp it's most likely to be the cable or the amp inputs and the cable is far easier and cheaper to replace, so get a known good cable and swap that out first and see what happens.

Seems that I located the issue, the interconnects do not seem to make the best connection.

Some tape fixed the issue! Just thought I would write it down if someone else has a similar problem.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Just saw this thread and was about to add that tracking force can't be the issue.  Then I see you discovered that!

Glad it is working again.
