What happened to 'Later'???
Watching the (recorded) 'Later live' and cannot beleive what I see. Hear, rather.
They used to be 5.1 surround sound (for sure) and 1080p picture (?). Now it is 1080i and stereo. The sound has lost all the 'atmosphere'...
What's happening?

checked the BBC and Jools Holland's sites, no info...
Why go backwards? Permanent? Temporary?
I have this on my planner, series linked, waiting to watch.
If this is true, I am going to be gutted too - its brilliant in full hd 5.1 surround.
Are you sure the Live program was in 5.1 and not just the Friday night show?
Just checked my recorded version - recorded Tuesday night - 17th.
Its also in 1080i / stereo - seems a bit odd why they would drop it even if this is a repeated run.
Will have to check planner as to when the live show is on and check / reset my recording if thats why it isnt in 5.1.
Annoying anyway.
EDIT
Looks like poster is right - the Tuesday night version seems to be the live version - tonights / Fridays is a repeat of Tuesdays show and is also only stereo.
Gutted, lets hope it reverts next session.

Hi Al,
It will never have been a 1080p transmission - it's a studio shoot and they are usually shot interlaced. Also the delivery and transmission spec for all UK broadcasters is 1080 50i. (they will accept 1080 25psf Feature film masters but only if there is no 50i version available - the Sony HDCamSR VTRs crossconvert from 25psf to 50i internally anyway when the material is ingested into the transmission servers.)
As for the sound, haven't got a clue. I know they do a 5.1 mix, but perhaps there was a problem with it so they transmitted the stereo mix.

Good point - I am sure the 'Later' was 5.1 Dolby digital. I am not sure 'Later Live' was also 5.1 Dolby Digital in teh past. But I think so. I do not remember any of them being different, I would have noticed that one is 5.1 and the other is stereo.
My Tv sound is always on the receiver and I am usally aware of what the content's sound and image properties are, especially when I watch an HD movie or a concert.
It's not a repeat as such, it's an extended version, they carry on after the Live show finishes on Tuesday and record more tracks to show on Friday.[/quote]
I'd be surprised if they have dropped the 5.1, given they used it in their "why is BBCHD so great?" adverts last year. Perhaps it's a casualty of the recent cost cutting.

Can anybody clarify what is the sound format for Later, Later Live and A Little Later - normally and recently and is there any change.
Both shows were previously broadcast in 5.1. There were occasional stereo shows (for no apparent reason), so we will have to see whether the first programme was one of these or whether it marks a complete change.
... And it was in stereo again this time ...
Such a loss. It sounded great in 5.1
I mailed the program but no reply.
I would either formally complain here or make a comment here. I've commented twice and both times I received a response (they should have a target response time being a public service), although one was quite curt when I complained about factual evidence in a news story!
It's a shame if it's not going to be in 5.1, although I think the quality of 'guests' has dimished over recent series. I assume new bands are being pushed on as you're almost guaranteed to sell if you're on there and even a quarter decent.
Done it. If htere is enough feedback hopefully the BBC will look into it.
To all - if you like 'Later' in 5.1 - complain using the above links.
Not watched any of the latest series, but was it flagged as 5.1, but only outputting stereo?
As the BBC has a habit of doing that, which is a PITA as you then can't use PLII should you wish to.
Well, it may only be two of us so far - but I have just submitted my complaint too, will be interested to see the responce.
Hopefully more will read this post and submit a complaint too.
Your right - its just not the same which is such a shame.
Thanks to the poster above for the link.
