Chinese Grand Prix: preview

Not only is the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix the first race at Shanghai International Circuit in five years, but it's also the first Sprint of the season – and it's precisely thanks to its speedy attributes that it's been chosen as such. That beautiful 1.2km straight between turns 13 and 14 is overtaking heaven.

This will be a Shanghai debut for four drivers: Oscar Piastri, Yuki Tsunoda, Logan Sargeant and, most notably, Zhou Guanyu, who's had to wait two years for his first home race. Without wanting to rain on the Kick Sauber man's parade, wet weather is expected to impact the Sprint, and possibly Qualifying too.

It's worth noting that the Sprint weekend format has been restructured for this season. Sprint Qualifying now takes place in the P2 slot, the Sprint is in the P3 slot, and Qualifying for the race itself has been restored to its traditional place, the final session on Saturday.

Reigning champion Max Verstappen tops the standings, 13 points ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez. However, there's no doubt that the standout driver of the season so far has been Carlos Sainz, who's just four points behind Charles Leclerc despite having to miss a race for an appendectomy. He could eat up that gap in the Sprint alone.

Chinese Grand Prix live stream in France
