Confusing model numbers

Why on earth do companies keep using confusing model numbers in different geographies.

In the UK a Samsung UE55KS9000 is a curved TV.   In New Zealand, a UA55KS9000 is a flat TV.   Admittedly, they use UE (europe) and UA (Asia) to deffierentiate but many reviews and shops don't use the full code and in a country like NZ, where we don't get many local reviews, we rely on reviews from overseas as a guide, so these codes can cause huge confusion.
