My last post before that forum dies on bookshelves

So we had a weekend shoot out at my place for some bookshelves speakers. The contestants were :

ATC SCM 11
PMC db1i's
Audio note AN2
Genelac 8040b
Some small speaker from ascendo

All driven by my parasound halo fed tidal by wxc-50.

The stars of the show were the PMC db1i's and the ATC's. It was too close between the both of them . But for musicality the PMC's were great. And for detail the ATC were great. And I just realised that I liked the ATC over the PMC. They had so much body to the sound and the vocals. And the PMC's despite their sweet mid range were lean .

Next was the ascendo. This was my friends small surround speaker, and was really awesome and balanced. This small maverick was so convincing, that if there was a speaker of considerable size like the the rest of the bookshelves , it would trample everything else. But it was too small to compete , but very promising.

Next were the audionote. On first listen there was absolutely no bass. So I stopped and checked my amp. With these speakers sitting just 5cms off my back wall, they couldn't produce any bass with a 160w @ 8 ohms amp . I was really surprised. As I expected they were designed to run with low powered tube Amps. But that bass hole was too gnawing to ingnore.

Coming to the genelac's...one of my friends who is mostly a critic, preferred these genelac's over the scm40A. And with the scm40A being my end system. I had high hopes to get blown. And this friend also had them on sale. So I could have bought them if I liked them enough. But alas...fed from the parasound's pre amp outputs via rca to XLR cables. They didn't sound anywhere close to hifi. Iam sure they needed a better dac. But those were my impressions.

Movies > Marantz SR6011 + parasound halo integrated > Supra cabling > Qacoustics concept 40 + concept centre + Qacoustics Q7000i + Yamaha in-ceiling speakers > 5.1.4 Music > Devialet air > Devialet D premier > Highend master class cabling > PMC twenty 26

.

The DB1s are more of a lively, enjoyable sound rather than trying to produce as flat a response as you can get for this sort of money. They’ll sound more involving at lower volumes as they’re quite an easy load, whereas the ATCs tend to need a bit of driving to bring them to life.

I’d say it depends on the amplifier pairing as to which one someone might prefer, as well as the sort of sound you’re after.

Just checking...

You keep calling the Genelecs, Genelacs.
Are these the same speakers or a knock off version?
Did you go direct from source on any of the actives or did you use a preamp for the whole test?
If you get a chance listen to the 8050's, the extra bass completes the sound. I listened to the 8040's in comparison to the 8050's and they were totally different speakers.
Anyway - all the best to everyone going forward, seems slightly weird that this will just end, imagine some people will feel some sense of mourning...
