I thought you had a hot deal there!

The battery may be faulty. Speak to Apple.

Nope, no hot deal here.  *smile*. Do I still speak to Apple if I got it from John Lewis?  I have a 3 year warranty with it.

What does the ipad say ? and no I am not taking the **** , the other week my ipad 3 ( in a black speck case ) on a hot day in the sun informed me it needed to shut down as it was too hot . The pad was v.warm but not " burning hot ".

What I'm saying is if it's not shutting itself down it could well be faulty .

Why did you order another

Why did you order another iPad now? Do you really need 3 tablets? Didn't you already have an iPad 2?

I wanted to take one on holiday and sold my other iPad 2.  I think the iPad 2 works better on this forum and in general too, I was going to get another tablet anyway

I don't think so. They'll change the battery and send it back to you.

Were you using it whilst

Were you using it whilst charging?  Some of my i things get pretty hot if you do something processor intensive whilst charging.  After a two hour drive in summer using Nav Free my iphone could melt rock!

My iPad3 gets very hot as well

During the summer, when I am in the south of France for a few months, my iPad 3 gets hot enough not to be usable resting on bare legs but it takes about 30 minutes. When I have used it in direct sun, it has tripped the overheat protection and I have put it in the fridge in a plastic bag for a while, to cool down. It does not get as hot as my previous MacBook Pro, a 2009 13" model, which once got hot enough to give me blisters on my legs. My current 15" Retina MBP, never gets as hot as that, other than around the Magsafe 2 power port, where it can become very hot, if I am charging from a low battery and simultaneously doing processor intensive work, like converting a large batch of RAW images to TIFF in Capture One.

I have noticed my iPad 3 getting warmer during recent days, when the temperature has reached the mid 30s, but when it gets too warm for comfort, I just switch it off for a while.

You are doing well to use your iPad in direct sun - I find the amount of reflected light from the screen, makes the iPad harder to easily use.
