US NEWS: Google enters online music business with OneBox

Google Onebox

Launched in the US, OneBox uses the company's search engine power to allow users to find tracks using song titles, artists or snippets of lyrics.

A pop-up widget powered by streaming music services such as iLike or Lala will then offer to play the song, while a MySpace box will allow people to buy MP3s of the tracks.

OneBox will also highlight other information about the artist such as forthcoming concerts or related music videos.

Google says the words 'music' and 'lyrics' are among the top 10 search terms of all time, so it's no wonder the company fancies some of the online music market.

We look forward to seeing what Google has in mind for the UK, where online music is currently dominated by Apple and latterly streaming services such as Spotify.
