If you’re familiar with Chord Company, you’ll know speaker cables and audio cables are its bread and butter. But now it has branched out into new territory, specifically power blocks. The aim? To improve the power supply to and the performance of your home hi-fi system.

Chord Company has introduced two new models available in both UK and European specifications, the snappily titled PowerHAUS S6 and its step-up sibling, the PowerHAUS M6.

HAUS stands for Hybrid Array Unfiltered Supply - these six-way blocks employ different levels of technology to try and eliminate any noise that might ruin your listening experience.

Both blocks use aluminium casings and inside you’ll find three isolated bus bars positioned in parallel in order to try and reduce the effects of high-frequency noise. Wiring is also heavily shielded to reduce the possibility of interference and all the internal cables and sockets have been chosen for both reliability and sound performance.

The S6 uses Chord’s SuperARAY conductor technology, but stepping up to the M6 introduces three of its hybrid MainsARAYs in parallel, plus Chord Company’s noise-reducing GroundARAY technology.

We were lucky enough to be invited down to Chord’s HQ in Amesbury, England to get first-hand experience of both of the new power blocks. Our listening session included switching between the two blocks while listening through Chord’s own reference system.

And, in our opinion, you could definitely hear differences in a number of areas including clarity, resolution and stereo imaging. Of course not every hi-fi system will warrant a £1000 (about AU$1900) or £2000 (about AU$3800) for the PowerHAUS S6 and M6 power block respectively, but if it does, then there's no harm in trying one out, right?

MORE:

10 affordable ways to upgrade your hi-fi system right now

Our pick of the best speakers cables 2022

And the best audio cables 2022

Power outlets with USB sockets are nothing new, but how about one with a built-in Bluetooth speaker as well? That's what we're looking at here, courtesy of UK retailer See Switches.

Don't expect it to rank up there with the best Bluetooth speakers around, but it seems like a great innovation if you need to save space. And because it has True Wireless Stereo (TWS) tech, it can wirelessly link with a second TWS speaker for stereo sound. So you could always bring in your dedicated Bluetooth speaker when you want fuller, beefier audio.

It features Bluetooth 4.2, instead of the newer Bluetooth 5, has a sensitivity of 80dB, and a frequency range of 280Hz – 16KHz. As we say, don't expect stellar performance, but for convenience, this looks hard to beat.

The power socket itself is 13A, and it has two USB ports for charging up mobile devices. And the scratch-free finish features no visible screws for a smooth, modern look.

Now, what to listen to on it? Power ballads? AC/DC? Plug One from De La Soul? Answers on a postcard (or in the comments, if that's easier).

MORE:

Check out the best Bluetooth speakers money can buy

These are the best waterproof speakers around

Make a saving with the best Bluetooth speaker deals

If you're thinking of saving some money by buying a cheap charger for your Apple device, you might want to think again.

Back in October it was revealed that Apple was taking legal action to counter the "flood" of fakes on sale on Amazon. And now investigators have revealed that the vast majority of these fakes fail a basic safety test.

Of 400 chargers tested, only three had the requisite insulation to protect against electric shocks, the BBC reports.

Trading Standards comissioned the tests, which were carried out by American safety consulting and certification firm UL.

MORE: Apple iPhone 7 review

UL tested fake Apple chargers it bought from eight different countries around the world, including the US, China and Australia. It applied a high voltage to the chargers, to see how they would react.

Trading Standards said the only way to be safe was to buy electrical goods from trusted suppliers.

"It might cost a few pounds more, but counterfeit and second-hand goods are an unknown entity that could cost you your home, or even your life, or the life of a loved one," said Leon Livermore, chief executive of Chartered Trading Standards Institute.

Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens' Advice Bureau, urged consumers to look out for signs a product was fake.

MORE: Apple AirPods hands-on review

"Look out for tell-tale signs of counterfeiting such as mistakes in brand names or logos, and check plugs for safety marks - all genuine electrical items made in the EU should have a CE mark on them," she said.

Other warning signs include plug adaptors not fitting into the socket properly (there should be at least 9.5mm between the edge of the plug pins and the edge of the charger), and a lack of official instructions containing conditions and limitations of use, and safety guidelines.

The lawsuit brought by Apple back in October was against a company called Mobile Star LLC, who Apple accused of copyright infringement for claiming its chargers are made by Apple. Apple said of 100 chargers it bought from Amazon, 90 were fake.

And it's not just Apple chargers, Amazon has a fake CD problem too...

MORE: Apple Music review

This Isotek comprises the Evo Polaris mains block (£300) and Premier mains lead (£100). Isotek anticipates that vast majority of Evo Polaris blocks will be sold with the accompanying lead, so it has been priced to include two pieces of equipment.

Performance

There’s no arguing with the scale or separation of the sound the Isotek allows. Even a recording as subtly complicated as The Unthanks’ reading of Tom Waits’ No One Knows I’m Gone is laid bare, each individual strand secure in its own space.

There’s a fluency and naturalness to its presentation and a deal more heft to dynamic variations. A set-up with this Polaris/Premier combo taking care of supply duties is a more positive and confident listen, especially at the top of the frequency range.

And yet there are mild downsides. The Isotek pairing puts an emphasis on the extremities of the frequency range, and consequently vocals can be robbed of a little character and nuance.

And there’s a touch of restraint where dynamics are concerned, a slight tendency to play quiet/loud/quiet passages a little safe.

Verdict

None of which means the Isotek isn’t worth investigating, of course, just that’s it’s a slightly qualified success.

MORE: Accessories Award winners 2014

MORE: Read all our mains product reviews

A separate earth terminal is provided for better system grounding.

The Special Edition PowerBlock-H sells for £899, with a version fitted with the company's Ultra Purifier mains filtration at £1149. It’s an admirable piece of kit, but with more sockets it would be outstanding. As it is, its appeal is limited – so four stars it is.

Follow whathifi on Twitter

Join whathifi on Facebook

We weren't overly enamoured with the last incarnation of Merlin's Tarantula mains cable, and a three-star rating was duly dished out.

But, the company's MK6 version is a spectacular improvement. Plug it into hi-fi electronics and, compared with your standard kettle lead, the Tarantula helps your system produce a much cleaner, smoother sound.

The lack of noise allows more detail to seep through into the soundstage, with greater separation between instruments and vocals.

But the benefits aren't just hi-fi based: plug the cable into a TV, and images appear crisper, while there's greater punch to the overall picture.

It's not a spectacular difference, but we think it's a worthwhile improvement nonetheless.

See all our mains cable reviews

Follow whathifi.com on Twitter

Join whathifi.com on Facebook

We tested the original version of Wireworld's entry-level power cord back in May 2004. We loved the original – but if anything, we reckon this new one is an even better buy.

It's £30 cheaper for starters. Structurally it's all change. The Stratus is now flat, and the revised construction is claimed to filter low and high frequencies while leaving the 50Hz mains supply unhindered.

It's a question of clarity
Judging by the impressive performance, we'd say it's doing plenty right. The Stratus 52 doesn't tend to stamp its character on the equipment it's connected to.

Instead you get to see or hear the kit's capabilities more obviously. Stereo hi-fi equipment sounds cleaner, crisper and more articulate. The dynamics are more forceful but there's not a hint of exaggeration or excess.

We've certainly heard more dramatic-sounding mains cables before, but little at this price that sounds as natural as this Wireworld.

Sharper, bolder TV images
Connect this cable to a TV, and the image is sharper, bolder and more detailed.

The improvement over the standard cables provided with TVs is clear, as is the Wireworld's obvious advantage over all but the very best at this price level. This is a great cable for the money and well worth a punt.

See all our mains cable reviews

Follow whathifi.com on Twitter

The first stock is arriving into the UK on April 15th and will be available from the Savasocket website.

It will set you back £19.99 plus delivery £3.95. which sounds like just under £24 to us. Using just under 0.19 watts of power in standby, it claims to be "probably the most efficient energy saving multiplug on the planet".

Story posted 22/03/10:

It's a prickly one for the AV industry, where products are often best left on for peak performance, but if you're getting in to the habit of turning your kit off rather than leaving it in standby, here's a product for you.

The Savasocket 6 Gang not only offers surge protection and a six-way mains block, it allows you to remotely turn off your AV kit.

Four of the plugs are for kit you want to turn off completely, while the other two will stay on in standby mode so that products such as a Sky box or PVR can still function fully.

The company claims it's "probably the most efficient energy saving multiplug adaptor on the planet", as it only uses 0.19 watts of power when in standby, well under the Energy Savings Trust's recomendation of 1 watt.

This product has also received the Energy Savings Trust's "recommended product" award as well as an award for innovation.

The Savasocket 6 Gang is programmed in under 30 seconds by the customer's remote control and claims to be easy as you like to programme.

It's controlled by an infrared remote control that communicates via an 'infrared eye', complete with a 2m cable, that attaches to the mains unit.

We're waiting for confirmation on pricing and availability.

Follow whathifi.com on Twitter

‘Big Orange' turns out not to be Dale Winton after all. It's an Ecosse mains cable so virulently orange that it looks like it might have been nicked from a Flymo.

In that respect it's not dissimilar to the original Big Orange mains lead we awarded four stars to more than half a decade ago.

In the intervening time, Ecosse has fiddled with many aspects of the content and construction of the cable – the number and arrangement of conductors, the insulation, the mains plug at one end and the three-pin connection at the other.

The result is this Mk2+. The benefits over a standard, free-in-the-box mains cable are abundant.

Used in a video discipline, the Ecosse offers greater certainty where movement and edges are concerned, deepens black shades and offers great punch to high-contrast scenes. Colours are bolder, details more numerous.

Benefits with video and audio
Gains are of a similar order when the Big Orange Mk2+ is introduced to audio equipment.

General clarity and midrange bite are improved, while low frequencies dig a little deeper and hit a little more solidly.

There's a hint of hardness to high-volume high frequencies – just a suggestion that the Ecosse won't suit more strident-sounding equipment – but this caveat doesn't spoil the overall performance.

So, while the Mk2+ isn't cheap, it's an upgrade more cost-effective than most.

See our mains cable Best Buys

Follow whathifi.com on Twitter

As bonkers as the price-tag may seem, this cable brings the biggest improvement of any of the mains products iwe've tested.

This particular version of the company's Reference PowerKord sports an optional Wattgate plug – and the results are remarkable.

Levels of detail, dynamics and clarity of sound are improved upon tenfold. Gains in picture quality aren't quite as substantial, but the cable still gives images a serious boost in resolution and cleanliness.

Not everyone can afford to spend over £200 on a mains cable, but those who own high-end components costing £2000 upwards should seriously consider this PowerKord lead.

However, the Van den Hul is never overly forceful in delivery and overall the sound is still natural and detailed – indeed more so than the Chord Company SuperScreen.

Music sounds neat and tidy with no particular area of the frequency range standing out for special treatment. In fact, it's this relaxed, safe sound that just holds the MainsServer Hybrid back.

The Van den Hul isn't boring or dull, there just isn't the spark that's needed for a five-star rating.

How much of the ongoing 'mains product' argument can we take as read? This is only a short review, so let's just say some people are more convinced of the merits of a £78 mains block than others.

Four stars should indicate that we're among the partial, but it also shows we're not fully convinced by this specific 78 quid's-worth.

On the plus side, the bigger side in this case, the Powerlink delivers greater spaciousness and detail to our reference stereo set-up.

We wouldn't characterise our test Naim/Bryston/ATC system's sound as particularly coarse ordinarily, but the Russ Andrews smoothed any rough edges, opened up the sound agreeably and liberated the finest points of Mogwai's May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door with casual efficiency.

Civilising unruly sound
The downside of this additional insight is an unwelcome gentility. The song loses some urgency, lacking the drive and attack evident without the Powerlink in place, replacing it in part with a stateliness of which we can't wholly approve.

So if you have a relatively crude, bolshy system, the Powerlink could be just the thing to introduce a note of civility into your sound. And even if your set-up is well sorted, the Russ Andrews is certain to dig up a bit more detail than you've been used to.

Whether you approve of the accompanying decorousness is another question entirely.

If you think that this Lindy device looks remarkably similar to the Award-winning Tacima CS929 mains conditioner, you'd be absolutely right.

That's because Lindy has a license to make that very same product. So theoretically, you should reap the same audio and visual benefits – but is this the case?

Well, this conditioner might be Lindy in name, but it still retains all the plus points of the Tacima. Sonically, the Lindy allows for greater clarity and spaciousness from your audio. Even the most hardened mains sceptic would struggle not to notice the improvements in quality.

Suitable for most speakers
It doesn't just work with expensive systems, either. We plugged in the £260 Razer Mako 2.1 system and were amazed at just how much separation the Lindy gave between instruments and voices, even with the Razer's small desktop speakers. The conditioner even managed to inject a subtle dose of solidity into the lower frequencies.

The Lindy has a positive effect on picture quality, too. Images lose noise and grain, leaving you with cleaner, sharper visuals.

Spread the word...
Let's face it, just the mere mention of the words 'mains conditioner' among family and friends is a sure-fire way to kill any conversation.

But it's up to you to make them understand that the type of power they fuel home cinema and hi-fi systems with can make a serious difference to picture and sound quality.

If they're in any doubt, simply point them in the direction of this fabulous product.

With its sturdy aluminium build, and rugged no-nonsense appearance, the Supra LoRad MD06-BS/SP mains filter looks quite formidable on our testing rig. In terms of build quality this mains block seems more than decent, and for wall-mounting, comes drilled with six holes, although these could prove small and fiddly for some.

We gave the sturdy Supra LoRad MD06-BS/SP Otis Redding's emotive and rich-sounding A Change Is Gonna Come to handle, and the Supra's effect on the sound became noticeable.Vocal clarity increased and became more transparent, but the sound also became leaner, losing some of the depth and the characteristic punchiness of a good soul recording. Despite the advantages, it doesn't offer enough improvement to justify a higher rating.

We've said it before, and by heaven we're going to say it again. Don't expect to get the very best out of the lovely, expensive hi-fi equipment you've bought if you don't pay equal attention to the quality of the mains supply it has to work with. And this product, Tacima's fine-value CS929, perfectly illustrates the benefits even a modest outlay can achieve.

This six-way mains conditioner delivers truly dramatic audio gains. Comparing its performance to the ‘unconditioned' sound, our reference CD/amp system enjoys greater separation and focus of sound, and greater clarity and confidence in the midrange. Bass is burlier and better integrated, too.

In a nutshell? It really does work, and is well worth the week's beer money it costs. This product really is a no-brainer.
