5 last-minute Cyber Monday tech deals to avoid – and what I'd recommend instead

With any deal event, whether it’s Black Friday or Cyber Monday, our review team doesn’t just have a duty to point you towards the best tech deals, but also to steer you away from savings that look pretty tempting on paper, but deep down, we just know there’s a better alternative elsewhere.

It might be the same price, or, if you’re lucky, even cheaper. Or, it might also be a tiny bit more expensive but we’d still recommend spending a tiny bit extra to get the added performance benefits that the product brings.

This is what I’ve done below. There are still plenty of tech deals ongoing for Cyber Monday but I’ve highlighted a handful which we think are worth avoiding because we have tested something that gives you more than just a low price to admire.

Stick with these alternative recommendations, and you won’t go wrong…

Don't buy… Amazon Echo Dot Max

On paper, the Echo Dot Max looks like a good upgrade on the 5th Gen Dot – bigger, twin driver units, and a new verison of Alexa. However, in our Echo Dot Max review, we felt that the Bluetooth speaker missed its mark completely, especially when it comes to sound quality. And this is why we think you should skip this model and go for the cheaper, smaller and older Echo Dot.

Buy this instead… Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen)

This is the Dot we'd go for. The Echo Dot (5th Gen) is a great value smart speaker at full price, but with the above discount, it's practically unbeatable. It's nicely made, has well-integrated Alexa smarts, plus it sounds far better than you'd imagine for the budget price. It's a lot more sonically rewarding than the Max, that's for sure. View Deal

Don't buy… Samsung QE65S95F

In our Samsung S95F review, we described it as “the best Samsung OLED” money can buy. Now, that's high praise in itself, but we can go one better than that with a TV that boasts even better picture quality for an even better price. Movie fans need look no further than the all-conquering Sony Bravia 8 II 65-inch, which just edges out the Samsung on our wish list.

The 65-inch version of the Bravia 8 II performs just like the 55-inch model, but with a small loss of sharpness (due to the same number of pixels being stretched over a larger area) and a fairly big increase in cinematic epicness. It also sounds even better, thanks to the larger size.View Deal

Don't buy… Technics SC-CX700

We love the convenience of all-in-one hi-fi systems like the Technics. They squeeze streaming smarts, a range of useful inputs and amplification into a pair of speakers. All you need to do is add power. However, in our Technics SC-CX700 review, we were left feeling slightly disappointed by the user experience and the lack of refinement in the sound quality department. Which is why we recommend the KEF alternative below.

The KEF LS50 Wireless II are a firm office favourite and boast similar features to the Technics. However, they are all wrapped and presented in a better-built, more user-friendly and more sonically satisfying package, all for a great price.

You'd think Sony would be able to mix it with the very best with its Bluetooth speakers, but we didn't think that was the case here. In our Sony ULT Field 3 review, we were left a little disappointed, concluding, "There’s nothing particularly offensive about how the Sony ULT Field 3 sounds, but by the same token, there’s nothing really memorable about it." For sound quality, it's easily trumped by this quality JBL alternative.

For the past few years, we think Bose has been neck-and-neck with Sony when it comes to the performance of its flagship noise-cancelling headphones. But following our time spent testing its latest model, it would appear there's now some daylight between the two. Our Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) review was generally positive, but this Sony alternative is clearly more musical-sounding and just provides a better overall experience. And they're cheaper.

If you look at our best TV guide and the latest What Hi-Fi? Awards 2025 winners list, you’ll see a lot of OLED sets in both – with good reason.

OLED’s pixel-level light control lets TVs create perfect blacks in a way no LCD panel can. If you’re a serious movie fan who wants the best picture possible, there’s a strong chance you’re one of many people considering getting an OLED over Cyber Monday.

The rub? Even during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, an OLED TV is still undeniably expensive – especially if you want a big-screen model. Heck, the 65-inch LG C5 dropped to its lowest price ever during the event at Richer Sounds, but it will still set you back a hefty £1279 right now.

Which is why bargain-hunting readers may be hovering their mouse cursor or thumb over a seemingly incredible deal on Amazon.

The discount it is currently offering on the 65-inch Toshiba XF9F53DB OLED, lets you grab the lounge filling set for a modest £699. That’s by far the lowest price I’ve seen on a 65-inch OLED this year.

We haven’t reviewed the XF9F53DB, but there's no denying it is very cheap right now. But we urge caution before you roll the dice on this wildcard OLED deal...View Deal

And yet I have a huge word of caution about it: be aware that you are taking a huge gamble. We haven't yet tested the Toshiba XF9F53DB, so we know nothing about its performance.

I have tested OLED TVs since the technology first launched, so please trust me when I say that buying blind is a big gamble. I’ve seen plenty of OLED TVs in my nearly two decades of reviewing, and there can be big performance differences between them.

I can also confirm that having an OLED panel doesn’t automatically make a TV ‘good’. Aggressive contrast, poor colour volume, oversaturation and terrible motion handling: all issues I have experienced on OLED TVs while reviewing them.

Without testing the Toshiba, it's far safer for me to point buyers to a known factor that the team and I have reviewed and know is worth your money. There are two solid options available right now, in roughly the same price ballpark as the Toshiba.

Those who just want a solid 65-inch TV and aren’t 100 per cent committed to an OLED panel, should definitely consider the TCL C7K. As luck would have it, the Award-winning set is currently on sale for £749 at Currys. That’s a solid £150 saving on a set we currently refer to as the best Mini LED TV for most people.

The best Mini LED we recommend for most people is on sale and one of the top-performing sets you'll find in general at its current price. You'll need to be quick, though, as stocks are selling out fast!View Deal

Highlights include an explosively bright but immersive picture and solid gaming specifications. A couple of the reasons we gave it a five-star rating and Award, with our reviewers clearly stating:

“Super-aggressive pricing, much-improved Mini LED backlighting and expansive Quantum Dot colour make the TCL C7K a performance-per-pound champ.”

Next up, for those who really do want an OLED, I suggest looking down a size or two and checking out the five-star 48-inch Samsung S90F. It is currently available for £790 on Amazon – the lowest price I’ve seen, and a solid £710 off its launch price.

Samsung’s small, step-down OLED is a great all-rounder offering fantastic gaming specifications and a bright, punchy picture that will delight movie fans. And at its current Cyber Monday price, it’s significantly cheaper than all its five-star rivals.View Deal

I was one of the reviewers in the room when we ran it head to head with its main rivals, the 48-inch LG C5 and 48-inch Panasonic Z90B. While it didn’t quite beat the Z90B from a pure picture quality perspective, with its colours occasionally looking a little over-baked, it remains a stellar OLED.

On top of that, it’s the cheapest you’ll find right now among the big three, and the best you’ll get from a performance-per-pound perspective, with the Z90B cost £350 more. Which is why I’m currently recommending it to any OLED shopper who can’t afford to spend more than a grand. It's far less of a risk than the wild-card Toshiba.

The price of Marshall's Dolby Atmos soundbar hasn't budged for Black Friday – but there's a five-star alternative that costs £180 less

If you don't have the space or budget for a multi-speaker system in your living room, investing in a soundbar may suit your needs perfectly well. And, for those wanting an immersive audio performance that can take the cinematic experience even further, choosing a soundbar with Dolby Atmos support is a great option.

With a range of different Atmos soundbars on offer, it can be difficult to know which ones are worth buying. Take the Marshall Heston 120, for instance, a 5.1.2-channel soundbar that marked the brand's first leap into the category. The soundbar launched at £900, placing it neatly in the upper end of the soundbar market.

It certainly takes a different approach in terms of design compared to the majority of other models, sporting retro-looking knobs that are certainly taking a leaf from the brand's rock and roll roots.

There is HDMI eARC for connection to your TV, plus a dedicated HDMI input, and it can pass through 4K/120Hz signals.

Those specifications certainly sound promising, but when we got the model into our test room, the Heston 120 didn't impress with its audio performance. There is a good tonal balance and cohesiveness, and a decent low-level dynamic subtlety so that voices can retain their intended emotional resonance.

But these low-level dynamics do not handle dramatic shifts very well, resulting in an overall flat and uninteresting performance. We say in the review: "It’s a soundbar that is capable of going quite loud, but it doesn’t seem either willing or able to produce the volume changes necessary to deliver real drama. In fact, we even wondered if Night mode had been activated inadvertently (it hadn’t)."

That all resulted in a three-star review from us, meaning Marshall's first soundbar didn't manage to make a meaningful mark. And, despite being released for a number of months, we haven't seen any discounts on the Marshall bar for Black Friday.

But don't worry! There's another Dolby Atmos soundbar available right now that we gave a glowing five-star review. Plus, there's a great discount for Cyber Monday, which makes this model even more tempting.

The Award-winning Sonos Arc Ultra is available for £719 at Richer Sounds, lopping a whole £280 off its original price.

A Sonos alternative that ticks all the right boxes

So what makes this model stand out from the rest? For starters, the Sonos Arc Ultra offers a level of precision and detail that is incredibly rare to find in a soundbar at this price point.

We note in our review while watching Blade Runner 2049: "Incidental noises such as footsteps, a tooth being gently placed on a glass table, and the soft squeak of a rubber surgical gown as a character stretches out his arm are all delivered clearly and cleanly but in an unforced manner, contributing to the atmosphere without distracting."

It delivers an excellent bass performance as well, certainly outdoing the Marshall Heston 120 in terms of low-level dynamics. While it doesn't go to floor-shaking levels of bass, the low-frequency notes hit with lots of force and stop precisely.

In terms of connectivity, there's wi-fi and Bluetooth support as well as an HDMI eARC output to easily connect to your TV, where it will become your TV's speakers with no need for a remote. We would have liked to have seen a few more HDMI sockets but that won't be a huge issue for most people.

So, if you're hunting for a premium Dolby Atmos soundbar to take your home cinema's audio to the next level, the Sonos Arc Ultra is an easy recommendation. And the £280 Cyber Monday saving at Richer Sounds makes this a no-brainer.

Why yes, there is a juicy LG G5 deal for Cyber Monday – but I wouldn’t buy it

In the past year, I've been involved in the testing of around 50 TVs.

Yes, that's a lot of TVs, and one of my favourites is the LG G5, which employs a fancy new Primary RGB Tandem OLED panel to dazzling effect.

It's a very tempting TV right now, too, as it's dropped to a record-low price of £1889 at Peter Tyson.

But here's the thing: as much as I like the LG G5, the Sony Bravia 8 II is even better. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the best TV I've ever tested.

The Bravia 8 II is discounted for Cyber Monday, too. Yes, it's a bit more expensive than the G5 – £1999 at Peter Tyson – but the extra is well worth paying, particularly if you're not going to partner your new TV with a dedicated sound system.

The Sony Bravia 8 II is a truly exceptional performer and a real all-rounder. It combines stunning brightness, colour vibrancy and sharpness with balance and naturalism, and it performs brilliantly right out of the box. Add excellent sound (by TV standards), an app-packed operating system and very good gaming specs, and you've got an awesome package.View Deal

The Bravia 8 II is the successor to the A95L (a TV I love so much, I have one in my own living room), and it's a significant upgrade.

It uses a newer, significantly brighter QD-OLED panel, for starters. Sony doesn't push the brightness as high as LG does with the G5's Primary RGB Tandem OLED panel, but it combines the increased brightness with richer colours and Sony's peerless processing to produce an image that's exceptionally punchy and three-dimensional, but still consistent and authentic.

This is a TV that dazzles with bold, stylised content, yet it never strays into the oversaturated, over-processed territory that some rivals occasionally find themselves in. Instead, the Bravia 8 II maintains Sony’s trademark naturalism, delivering that careful balance between vibrancy and subtlety.

Dark-scene performance is especially strong. Gradation is handled with a finesse the G5 doesn’t quite match, producing true OLED blacks and shadow detail that feels layered rather than crushed.

And, as ever with Sony, you barely need to touch the settings. As noted in my original review:

“For a supremely authentic picture, simply pick Dolby Vision Dark for Dolby Vision content or Professional for everything else.

“Should you want a little more pop to proceedings, either because you’re watching in a room with ambient light or simply because you enjoy an even more thrilling delivery, simply switch to Dolby Vision Bright or the Cinema mode.”

Audio is another feather in the Bravia 8 II’s cap. Its Acoustic Surface Audio+ system produces direct, articulate sound with an openness that most OLED rivals – including the LG G5 – simply can't match.

A dedicated sound system will always be the better option (the Sonos Arc Ultra remains an excellent match), but for built-in speakers alone, the Bravia 8 II is unusually capable.

If there’s one caveat, it’s connectivity: Sony still limits you to two HDMI 2.1 sockets (one doubling as the eARC port), whereas LG offers four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs on the G5.

For setups with multiple consoles and an AVR or soundbar, that’s something to consider. But if you have just one games machine or none at all, that won't be an issue.

And that’s ultimately why I’d recommend the Bravia 8 II over the G5: while the LG has more HDMI 2.1 sockets and higher brightness, the Sony delivers a picture and sound experience that simply feels more cinematic, more refined, and more consistently satisfying.

Looking for a small OLED TV? I strongly recommend one above all others right now

If you’re shopping for a small-ish OLED TV during Cyber Monday, I have some good news.

Not one, but three of the best 48-inch OLED TVs I had the pleasure to help review this year have had decent discounts.

If you were to ask me, though, if you should get LG’s small C5, or our current Award-winner, the 48-inch Panasonic Z90B, my answer would be “neither”.

No, at its current price of £790 on Amazon, I wholeheartedly recommend that most buyers go for the 48-inch Samsung S90F.

Why this set, when we gave this year’s best premium 48-50in TV What Hi-Fi? Award to the 48-inch Panasonic Z90B, not the Samsung? It’s all to do with our hallowed performance-per-pound metric.

We always factor this into our buying advice, and while the Samsung may not be as good at full price, with the Z90B offering a bit more control and generally authentic picture, the Panasonic is currently retailing for £1099 at Richer Sounds (save £400). And at that price, it’s too expensive.

The improvements don’t merit spending that extra £310. The Samsung offers excellent picture quality in its own right, and it has better gaming specifications than the Panasonic, offering four full-speed HDMI 2.1 inputs.

The Z90B has only two sockets that can run modern game consoles at full speed – and one of those doubles as the eARC connection required for a Dolby Atmos soundbar.

As we say in our S90F review:

“This is an excellent 48-inch OLED overall – one of the best we have tested, despite the slight colour exaggeration. For your money, you’ll get a bright, punchy, smallish OLED capable of delivering a fun home-movie experience full of pop. Add to this flawless gaming specifications and excellent app support, and you get a TV that we are happy to recommend.”

If you’re wondering why I’m not pushing you to the 48-inch LG C5, over the Samsung, there are two simple reasons. First, the S90F is £110 cheaper, with the 48-inch LG C5 selling for £899 at Amazon.

And second because, having had the two side by side, I can confirm the Samsung offers a slightly better picture. Though it does occasionally overbake colours compared with the C5, the S90F manages to retain colour volume during low-light scenes a lot better than the LG, making it a better option for most movie fans, in our opinion.

If you want a 48-inch OLED TV right now, then, I strongly recommend taking advantage of Amazon’s current deal on the Samsung S90F while stocks last.

The Sony Bravia 8 OLED TV has never been cheaper, but I recommend this rival Cyber Monday deal

Black Friday has given way to Cyber Monday, and while most of the TV deals have stayed the same, the excellent Sony Bravia 8 has dropped in price even further.

Today, you can get the 55-inch Bravia 8 for £1258 at Amazon, the 65-inch model for £1499 at Peter Tyson, and the 77-inch version for £2429 at Richer Sounds.

This is a superb, five-star, What Hi-Fi? Award-winning OLED TV, and it's never been cheaper than it is right now, but I don't recommend buying it.

Why? The reasons are two-fold:

First, Sony recently launched a new version of the Bravia 8 called the Bravia 8A. This has a non-backlit version of the Bravia 8's remote, and it comes with fewer credits for the Sony Pictures Core streaming service, but Sony says the performance is identical.

And, crucially, at most sizes, it's cheaper than the Bravia 8.

The second reason is that the LG C5 is newer and even better than the Bravia 8 – and loads cheaper than both of the Sony options for Cyber Monday.

So, while I'm a big fan of the Sony Bravia 8, it's definitely the LG C5 that I recommend buying right now.

Bigger is always better, right? If you agree with that sentiment, we suggest checking out the 77-inch LG C5. The set shares the same core DNA as its smaller siblings and has had a hefty sum knocked off its price thanks to this stellar deal.View Deal

Why choose the C5 over the Bravia 8?

So, why do I prefer the LG C5 to the Sony Bravia 8? The current pricing has a lot to do with it, of course, but, honestly, I would choose the C5 over the Bravia 8 even if they were the same price.

The Bravia 8 was the best performance-per-pound TV of last year, when it defeated the last-gen LG C4. However, LG then made just enough improvements to this year's C5 to surpass the Bravia 8 in performance.

The C5 is a super-crisp OLED TV, with great colours, excellent motion handling and loads of detail. It has a better, more user-friendly operating system and smart platform, too.

The C5 is also a big step up for gamers, thanks to the presence of four full-fat HDMI 2.1 sockets that all support 4K/120Hz (4K/144Hz if you have a fancy PC), VRR and ALLM. The Sony has just two such sockets, and it doesn't go up to 144Hz.

An excellent HGiG mode makes it even easier to get excellent, accurate HDR from games with the C5, too.

There's one way in which the Bravia 8 thrashes the C5, and that's sound. That said, either TV should be partnered with a dedicated audio system (even if that's a fairly affordable soundbar), and the price difference means budgeting for such a thing should be easier if you go for the LG TV.

Which TV is right for you this Black Friday? I've distilled my buying advice and am recommending three top-tier models

Buying a TV during Black Friday can be an overwhelming experience. You have the likes of Sony, Samsung, Hisense, TCL, LG, Panasonic and Philips all vying for your attention and, more importantly, your hard-earned cash.

Choosing the right model is easier said than done, as there are different panel technologies to consider, screen sizes and specifications which will all influence how you use your TV and the picture performance you'll receive.

There's also an added layer of considering whether the Black Friday deal is actually good, or if the savings aren't really worth it.

It's exhausting, but luckily for you, you don't have to go through any of that stress if you simply follow my advice.

I've been reviewing the latest 2025 TVs all year, and when I've not been in the AV testing room, I've been flying around the world to see the latest TVs in action ahead of their official launches.

I've distilled my Black Friday TV buying guidance into three simple options: a budget choice, a mid-range TV and a premium flagship model, meaning you can pick the TV that best aligns with your budget.

I've selected a trio of 55-inch and 65-inch TVs; however, if you're looking for a smaller option, I'd urge you to look a the 42-inch LG C5 or 48-inch LG C5. And for anyone who wants an XL TV, there is the 98-inch TCL C7.

I've chosen these TVs on their picture performance merits primarily, however they all also feature excellent specs elsewhere, including HDMI 2.1 gaming support and built-in streaming platforms.

Without further ado, here is my distilled Black Friday TV guidance...

The best value choice

I've recommended this TV during the Black Friday sales a few times, and recently cited it as the best choice "if OLED is out of the question".

It delivers convincing black depths with minimised blooming thanks to TCL's effective Halo Control technology, while the 1008 dimming zones and claimed 2800 nits of peak brightness allow for impressive brightness that is also surprisingly disciplined.

This TV is also impressively feature-rich, with two HDMI 2.1 sockets that can handle signals up to 4K/144Hz with VRR and ALLM, support for both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR, and there's even a decent built-in sound system that's been tuned by legendary Danish hi-fi brand Bang & Olufsen.

This TV launched for £899, and it's £150 off in the Black Friday sales; it might not look like a huge price reduction, but this TV was already punching well above its weight, so the fact that it's even cheaper right now makes it an easy recommendation for anyone working with a slightly tighter budget.

The best mid-range choice

The 55-inch LG C5 OLED TV is a gem in the mid-range sector. It leverages a "traditional" WOLED panel to deliver sensational contrast and deep, true blacks, which makes for an impressive and immersive cinematic image.

Paired with four HDMI 2.1 sockets, all of which are full bandwidth for 4K/144Hz gaming with VRR and ALLM and LG's extensive webOS smart platform full of streaming apps, the LG C5 is both fully-featured and great-looking.

The only area that's a slight let-down is the built-in sound. However, the 55-inch model, which we reviewed at £1900, has dropped below £1000 and can now be found for around £989 at many retailers.

I'd recommend using the savings to invest in a Sonos Arc Ultra. which has also been discounted for Black Friday.

The best premium choice

The cream of the 2025 TV crop is the 55-inch Sony Bravia 8 II, an OLED TV that blew us away when we first tested it earlier this year.

It leverages a QD-OLED panel for enhanced brightness, and the combination of Sony's XR Processor and its prestigious picture tuning to create a contrast-rich, finely detailed and supremely three-dimensional image.

Much like the other options on this list, it supports the latest gaming features (enhanced by Sony's Perfect for PlayStation protocol), and it scores the highest on this list for the built-in sound thanks to Sony's excellent actuator-based drivers.

This TV is guaranteed to impress even the toughest cinephiles thanks to its rich and balanced image, and at an almighty £1000 discount, it's also a superb deal this Black Friday.

Our soundbar: Sonos Arc Ultra

With all of the madness of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it can be easy to forget that not every product, be it headphones, accessories or separates, will be discounted at all.

It's also easy to forget that, because of this perennial truth, you don't have to buy hi-fi on a discount. Sometimes, a product sells itself, and that's something which the stunning Rega Planar 3 RS Edition does in some style.

Not only is the Planar 3 RS Edition a What Hi-Fi? Awards winner for 2025, it's also our Product of the Year in our turntables category, essentially making it the best of the best of the best.

It's also the deck we use in our test rooms as our reference model, with keen rivals going up against the mighty Rega to see if they can surpass its sonic excellence. None have succeeded thus far.

In terms of pound-per-sound value, the RS Edition is still the best turntable you can get for £1000. That's without discounts or savings, and it's just as well, as Rega doesn't tend to offer big drops (or small drops for that matter) on its healthy stable of record players. The price you see is the one you get, take it or leave it.

It's just as well that the Planar 3 RS Edition sells itself on its sonic performance. At this level, nothing can touch its musicality and energy, and while the natural warmth of vinyl can make certain spinners sound overly soft or lacking in punch, the RS Edition provides real bite and muscle to almost any record you can think of playing.

To quote from our review: "There is a confidence and effortless quality to the way this turntable sounds...the RS Edition locks every detail, every instrument, every vocal into place in an assured way that is admirable and wholly enjoyable".

Compare it with a price-comparable rival, such as the very competent Clearaudio Compass, and you'll realise just how dynamically gifted the Rega is. It's a born entertainer, and it can make its competitors sound flat and hesitant by comparison.

That certain something

What the RS Edition also has is what we might term the 'I want one of those' factor. Rega decks are generally beautifully made, and this one is absolutely no exception.

Constructed with care and cratsmanship, the sleek spinner's plinth is still MDF like the standard model, but wrapped in the High Pressure Laminate usually reserved for more premium models. It's the sort of thing you'd rarely find in a sub-£1000 deck, and it gives the RS Edition a sharp, enticing and modern look.

In fact, logic tends to go somewhat out of the window when it comes to Rega's superb Award-winner. Once you've seen it, used it and heard it, it's hard not to imagine what it would look like in your own front room, flanked by some appropriately talented hi-fi.

The perfect time

The thing is, it's never been more tempting to get hold of a great turntable. The vinyl revival isn't going anywhere soon, with physical media sales continuing to rise as users discover the joy of engaging with their music in the tangible, three-dimensional world.

The Planar 3 RS Edition would make engaging with that revival such a pleasure. Dusting off your old LPs soon loses its shine when you're feeding them to a machine that can't do them justice, but with the Rega, you're in for a sonic treat each and every time.

This may have been the period of big deals and heavy discounts, but if you take your records seriously, you'll happily pay full price to get them sounding their best. I know I would.

The Black Friday deals are continuing as we head into Cyber Monday, and there's literally no cheaper five-star TV than the 50-inch Amazon Omni QLED, which can currently be bought for just £300 at Amazon.

Lowest-ever price: £300
At full price, the 50-inch Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED is a really good TV. With this discount, it's a total bargain. It combines QLED technology with capable local dimming and considered tuning to produce a surprisingly balanced and cinematic picture. It also supports all HDR formats, has surprisingly good gaming specs and, of course, features the app-packed Fire OS smart platform.View Deal

There's no denying that's a serious bargain, but I don't think you should buy it.

That's because the newer 50-inch TCL 50C6KS is even better, and is available for just a little more money – £345 at Amazon.

The 50-inch TCL C6KS would have been strong value at its £549 launch price, so when we reviewed it at £419, we discovered an exceptional TV for the money. So exceptional, in fact, that we gave it an Award! And now you can buy it for even less.View Deal

That additional £45 is well worth paying, in my view.

Unlike the Omni QLED, the TCL 50C6KS is a Mini LED TV with 160 dimming zones. It's much brighter than the Amazon model, and has much better contrast.

The panel also features TCL's new HVA technology, which helps it deliver deep blacks, refined shadow detail, and better halo control than cheaper TVs normally manage.

Like the Omni QLED it supports all current HDR formats (HLG, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision), but its superior hardware means its better able to make use of them, delivering a brighter, more dynamic and more colourful picture.

Bright highlights pop without washing out, and the colour is both punchy and natural – skin tones, skies and foliage all feel balanced, not over-saturated.

On the design side, the TV is mostly plastic, but nothing about it seems cheap when you’re actually watching it. The bezels are reasonably slim and the stand is serviceable.

Performance for gaming is pretty solid: there’s VRR and ALLM support, and the input lag is very low (9.9 ms). It’s only a 60Hz panel, but that's to be expected at this level, and the HDR in games feels satisfying and punchy.

The smart platform is Google TV, which gives you all the usual streaming apps plus voice control. Every major streaming service is supported, including all of the UK catch-up apps.

Surprisingly, the audio is very capable for a TV at this price. It supports Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual-X, and it delivers more clarity and detail than you’d expect – dialogue stays clean, and there’s good separation, though the bass isn’t powerful. It’s not going to replace a soundbar, but for everyday viewing it’s very decent.

There are a few drawbacks: motion can look a little soft, and very bright HDR highlights sometimes suffer clipping or colour banding. But this is still, as we said in our review, “one of the year’s biggest bargains”.

It overdelivers in pretty much every area where you’d normally compromise on a budget TV, which is why it's a What Hi-Fi? Awards 2025 winner.

So, yes, the Amazon Omni QLED is great value for £300, but the improvements offered by the TCL C6KS are well worth the extra £45 it currently costs.

The 65-inch Hisense U8N, which launched at a price of £1800, can now be picked up for just £769 at Hughes.

I suspect this is your last chance to get this deal, as this is an older model that has now been officially discontinued, and most retailers have now sold out.

If you want a great value, top-end Mini LED TV, the Hisense U8N is a solid choice. The set offers an impressive, balanced picture, fantastic upscaling capabilities, a 4K/144Hz refresh rate for gamers and an all-encompassing streaming selection. Get it at its lowest price before stock runs out.

When the Hisense U8N first landed last year, its £1800 price tag pitched it deep into OLED territory. Now that it's available for under £800, it suddenly becomes a very different – and far more compelling – proposition.

Design and build feel like a serious step up from previous Hisense sets. The stand is solid and stable – heavy enough that shifting the TV demands two people – and the slimmer speaker grille leaves ample room underneath for a soundbar.

The 4K 65-inch panel uses Mini LED backlighting and Quantum Dot tech, and the TV supports all four of the current HDR formats: HLG, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.

Gaming specs are great, too, with support for 4K/120Hz (and 4K/144Hz if you've got a powerful PC), VRR, ALLM and gaming in Dolby Vision. There are just two HDMI 2.1 sockets, though.

Picture-wise, once you tweak the settings, the U8N is a really good peformer. Blacks aren’t quite OLED-deep, but shadows retain detail, and bright scenes stay controlled rather than blown out.

In dark film scenes, contrast and shadow detail are rich; in bright sunlit HDR scenes the TV’s high peak brightness makes highlights pop. Upscaling older 1080p or lower-res content also impresses – grain, texture and shadow detail remain intact, preserving older films’ character.

Sound is a bit of a weak spot – the built-in 2.1.2 setup is serviceable at modest volumes, but strained when pushed harder – but hopefully this super-low price leaves space in your budget for a soundbar.

In short, while the Hisense U8N once looked like a not-great choice alongside similarly priced OLED sets, it looks like exceptional value with this super-cheap Black Friday / Cyber Monday deal.

Black Friday is now firmly in the rearview mirror, but Cyber Monday is dead ahead, and most of the best TV deals are still available.

In fact, I just found a sneaky way to get my favourite small OLED – the 42-inch LG C5 – for just £727 at AO.com.

The previous best price was £740 at Hughes, and the TV is still £759 at Amazon, so this is a great deal. And remember, this is a TV that launched at a price of £1400!

Getting this price means signing up for an AO.com membership, which costs £40, but I've accounted for that in the £727 price I've quoted.

How it works is you sign up for the membership for £40, then you can buy the TV for just £687 – and get free delivery thrown in.

A small amount of effort then, but well worth it for the best 42-inch TV that money can buy.

The LG C5 is clearly the best 42-inch TV currently available – and yes, I say that as someone who’s tested many.

The hallmark OLED magic is all here: pixel-level contrast, truly inky blacks, and that pixel-level contrast control that never fails to draw you into a film or game.

With a little tweaking – we recommend Filmmaker Mode with judder reduction off and tone mapping on – the picture is beautifully balanced. Rich but natural skin tones, bright highlights when called for, and none of that over-the-top HDR exaggeration.

Scenes pop with impressive depth, colours feel cinematic rather than overcooked, and even fast action stays entirely smooth, with no ghosting or blur.

On the smart TV front, the C5 gets close to top marks. The latest webOS has too many adverts, but it also houses a full complement of properly nativised streaming apps, including Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV+, and even BBC iPlayer, ITVX and many more besides.

But where the C5 really shines, at least for me, is gaming. All four HDMI 2.1 ports support 4K/120Hz gaming (4K/144Hz if you have a powerful enough PC), with VRR, ALLM and Dolby Vision Game Mode support.

That low input lag and high refresh rate make it so responsive that many people buy the LG C5 as a large gaming monitor rather than a traditional TV, and I'm all for that.

No TV is perfect, and the 42-inch C5 has some small flaws.

Colour volume takes a slight hit in very dark scenes; there are moments when low-light content feels a bit flatter than I’d like; and the built-in speakers are pretty weak.

But the picture is still excellent overall, and no TV sounds great, so these flaws are easy to accept – particularly at this price. Do try to add a soundbar to improve the audio, though.

In short, the C5 isn’t flawless, but it comes as close as any 42-inch OLED has to date. For me, it’s hands-down the best compact premium TV you can buy: cinematic when you watch movies, super-responsive when you play games, and compact enough for a second room or smaller lounge.

Cyber Monday OLED TV deals continue to impress, but this is the best option for anyone dead set on Mini LED

I've been recommending TVs to eager Black Friday and Cyber Monday buyers for four days straight, and it's come to my attention that I've been mostly steering people towards OLED sets.

That's no great surprise, as we find that the panel technology delivers the most cinematic performance in our experience. We've said it before, but when you experience OLED black levels and contrast, it's near impossible to go back.

That being said, it's come to my attention that OLED isn't everyone's cup of tea, and I think that's fair enough. As someone who's constantly surrounded by premium OLEDs, it's easy to lose sight of the other options, but I completely realise that while I'll always opt for an OLED TV where possible, not everyone feels the same, and for good reasons too.

First and foremost, OLED TVs are expensive. Even hundreds of pounds worth of Black Friday savings can't drag the Sony Bravia 8 II's price below £1500, and the LG C5 sits north of £1000 in its 65-inch size, even with discounts applied.

Furthermore, there is the issue of brightness, as OLED has been playing catch-up with Mini LED in this regard for a few years now. The playing field is beginning to level with QD-OLED and Primary RGB Tandem OLED hitting their respective strides, but these panels are only featured in premium sets.

So, if you want a TV that balances convincing black levels and punchy brightness, and features a price tag that's under four figures, then OLED is, frankly speaking, out of the question.

Fear not, as I've been wracking my brains as to what the best alternative could be, and I was reminded of a TV that I've been using in our dedicated AV testing room just over a week ago.

It's the Award-winning 65-inch TCL C7K, a TV that I admittedly had some reservations about.

I wasn't a huge fan of the C855K, and that was the last TCL TV I'd come face-to-face with in our testing facility, so unboxing and setting up the C7K as a reference model for an upcoming review made me slightly anxious.

Thankfully, my nerves were quickly dispelled when this TV jumped into action. It's a fantastic looking TV across the board, with punchy highlights, impressively balanced colours and, most impressively, really convincing black levels.

Now I'm sure an OLED would show it up in a side-by-side test, but considering the price and capabilities of this TV, I was really impressed with how dark blacks came across on this TV.

Better still, dark scenes weren't compromised with obvious patches of blooming, which added to the experience and made them look even more convincing.

It's really hard for a backlit TV to excel in doing this, and we've seen many Mini LED TVs falter at this hurdle. However, the TCL C7K refuses to do so.

The best news about all of this is that the 65-inch model is currently discounted for Black Friday, meaning you can pick it up for just £749 at Currys, down from £899.

TCL is known for its budget TVs, but that doesn't mean it cuts back on features. This TV sports a staggering 1008 dimming zones and features a claimed peak brightness of 2800 nits.

Paired with a 4K/144Hz panel, two HDMI 2.1 sockets that support high-performance gaming with VRR and ALLM, a sound system tuned by none other than Bang & Olufsen, and support for both Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10+, this TV begins to look more premium than its price suggests.

However, the real magic comes with TCL's new Halo Control system, which mitigates the drawbacks of the Mini LED backlight for more precise blacks. I think this is the real ace up TCL's sleeve, as it works a treat on the C7K.

This plays a crucial role in the reduction of blooming, which makes dark scenes look much more immersive. Black depths on this TV are shockingly impressive for a backlit model, especially at this price, meaning you can get an experience that's not a million miles off OLED for a much lower price.

The TCL remains my top pick for a 65-inch TV under £1000 this Black Friday, and it will certainly appeal to anyone looking to avoid OLED, especially with it being priced at just £749 at Currys.

I own this 4K Blu-ray player, and I think it's a better and cheaper option than Netflix Premium this Black Friday

I'm a huge advocate for the 4K Blu-ray format, hence why I've been listing the gains of physical media to anyone who will listen for the last three years.

Higher fidelity audio, no lagging or buffering and, most importantly, a much more consistent and sharper image are among the main benefits, and any home cinema enthusiast who's pulled the trigger on starting a 4K Blu-ray collection will echo my sentiment.

Investing in a 4K media library does, of course, require a quality disc player, and I'm recommending the one that I own and use frequently for the physical media-curious this Black Friday.

The Sony UBP-X700 is my weapon of choice when it comes to spinning high-resolution discs, and it's served me well ever since I welcomed it into my home around two years ago.

We bestowed this player with a five-star review back in 2018, which may sound like a long time ago, but we need to remember that the 4K Blu-ray player market hasn't seen much movement in years.

In fact, a slightly tweaked version called the UBP-X700/K currently features on Sony's disc player lineup; it assures us that it's basically the same player without network features. It's the first "new" player that the company has launched in over five years, which should tell you how stagnant the scene is for 4K Blu-ray players.

Back in 2018, the UBP-X700 launched at £249, but Amazon has it priced at just £225 during the Black Friday sales; not a huge discount, granted, but here me out on this discount...

This Sony 4K Blu-ray player is plugged into my TV right this very second, and I've used it to spin 4K discs constantly for the last couple of years. It delivers an impressive picture and sound performance at a price that will have you thinking twice about your streaming service subscription. View Deal

At £225, the UBP-X700 is currently cheaper than a year of Netflix's 4K subscription tier, and frankly, I would pick this disc player over Netflix any day of the week.

Netflix upped the price of its Premium tier in the UK to £18.99/month in February of this year. That option is the only way to stream in 4K HDR from Netflix, meaning you'll have to settle for 1080p if you opt for one of the "standard" plans; we also wouldn't be surprised if this price increases again in the near future.

Therefore, a year of Netflix Premium will run you approximately £228, which is slightly more than the cost of this player.

There are, admittedly, pros and cons to this comparison. You will need to factor in the cost of 4K Blu-ray discs, and you don't have the same range of content at your fingertips as Netflix offers.

Netflix has had a run of cancelling shows and offloading content recently, and I've noticed that a fair amount of its third-party content doesn't even stream in 4K HDR; either defaulting to 4K SDR or, in some cases, HD.

And to soften the blow regarding the price of 4K Blu-ray discs, I've compiled a few tempting 4K Blu-ray offers from my personal collection and our AV testing library to kick start your collection:

Benefits of physical media include the fact that you won't have to rely on an internet connection to play your content, meaning you won't notice a dip in picture quality if your wi-fi is struggling.

Furthermore, when you own a 4K disc, you own it for life; unlike streaming services, in which content is frequently removed or rotated to a whole other service.

The picture and sound benefits also speak for themselves. Being someone who spends a lot of their time staring at screens and switching between 4K discs and streaming, I've become particularly sensitive to the blocky gradation that's often present on streaming services.

I've also watched my fair share of Netflix and 4K Blu-ray content (using this exact Blu-ray player) on my Sony A80L OLED TV, and can vouch that the UBP-X700 delivers a sharper image with better contrast, and sound is richer and more cinematic too.

It's also worth mentioning that I am aware of reports relating to this player occasionally sticking and freezing when playing 4K discs; however, this has happened only twice in my time using this from memory.

For £225 at Amazon, I think this plucky 4K player is a great option for anyone looking to leave streaming behind this Black Friday.

I can't recommend Bose on Cyber Monday while this Sony headphones deal still exists

Black Friday is over for another year, and it's time for Cyber Monday to take over the reins as people try to pick up a last-minute bargain before prices start creeping back up.

I've been keeping an eye on two pairs of flagship wireless headphones from Bose and Sony, both of which are new this year and both of which have dipped in price over the past few days.

Historically, the top pairs of ANC over-ears from both of these brands have been pretty close in terms of both performance and price, but this year, I think your choice is a bit more straightforward.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 are the company’s best wireless headphones yet, boasting not only excellent comfort, but great portability, brilliant noise-cancelling skills and stunning sound quality. They only launched a few months ago, so we doubt they will fall lower than this before 2026.View Deal

This year, it’s between the Sony WH-1000XM6, which I use daily and have been using ever since their launch back in May this year and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), which launched in October.

Both are flagship pairs of wireless headphones, but I can only recommend one of these deals.

The Sonys normally cost £399, but I’m pleased to report they are currently sitting at their lowest price ever of £299 at Amazon.

The Bose come in at £450, and they are currently available for £399 at Amazon. Not a bad price, but the Sonys are cheaper, so they win this particular battle, and that’s before we’ve even touched upon the way these two pairs of ANC over-ears perform.

In terms of design, it’s a close-run thing. Both pairs feel comfortable on your head and are suited to long periods of use – perfect for long commutes or the occasional long-haul flight. Both pairs fold away completely, so you can store them in a bag easily.

When you want to cut out external noise, the Bose just about edge it, but I am talking by the finest of margins. The Sonys still remove background grumbles effortlessly and do so with less of a heavy hand than the Bose.

The way the Bose go about their ANC business is a bit more brutal, which not everyone enjoys. And I think Sony’s call quality is the best in the business, capable of virtually erasing all wind noise from your conversations.

But it’s in the sound quality stakes where the gap is biggest. The Bose just can’t match the detail, clarity and dynamics of the WH-1000XM6. I think the difference is obvious and one you can't ignore, especially when you consider the price difference.

We couldn’t make it any clearer than our Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) review, which says, “Musically, they’re (Sony XM6) what we can confidently call ‘next level’”.

Even though it’s great to see both flagship pairs discounted, my money would go straight to the Sony WH-1000XM6. With £100 off at Amazon, and still £100 cheaper than the Bose, to me, this decision is the biggest Cyber Monday no-brainer I’ve seen so far.

Why I love the Bravia 8 II

The Bravia 8 II is the follow-up to the excellent A95L – the very TV I rely on at home.

That alone probably tells you how much I love the A95L, but after spending time reviewing the Bravia 8 II side-by-side with it, I have to admit my own setup suddenly feels a touch less special.

Sony’s newer QD-OLED panel pushes brightness noticeably further than the previous generation. That extra luminance doesn’t just make highlights punchier; it also deepens contrast and expands colour volume in a way that immediately stands out.

This is a wonderfully vivid TV that absolutely sings with colourful films – the Spider-Verse series is a perfect example – yet it remains beautifully restrained when it needs to be, delivering that signature Sony balance and cinematic naturalism.

Sharpness is another area where the Bravia 8 II quietly excels. Sony’s AI-based processing selectively refines fine details, but you never catch it working – you just see a picture that looks exceptionally clean, precise and almost sculpted.

Low-light performance is superb, too. Sony has clearly put effort into dark gradation, resulting in rich, true OLED blacks supported by impressively nuanced shadow detail.

What I appreciate most is how little tweaking is required. As I mentioned in my full review:

"For a supremely authentic picture, simply pick Dolby Vision Dark for Dolby Vision content or Professional for everything else.

"Should you want a little more pop to proceedings, either because you’re watching in a room with ambient light or simply because you enjoy an even more thrilling delivery, simply switch to Dolby Vision Bright or the Cinema mode."

Sound quality is another of the Bravia 8 II’s surprises. Its Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology delivers clarity and directness, but also a level of spaciousness that's rare from a TV.

I still advise pairing it with a proper sound system (the Sonos Arc Ultra is a fantastic entry point for a TV this good), but if you insist on using built-in speakers, this is yet another advantage the Sony holds over options such as the LG G5, Samsung’s S95F, and even the Panasonic Z95B.

My only gripe is connectivity. You get two HDMI 2.1 ports (plus two standard HDMIs), and one of those 2.1 inputs doubles as the eARC port. LG and Samsung both offer four HDMI 2.1 sockets on their comparable models.

For my setup – a PS5, an Xbox Series X and a Dolby Atmos sound system – that limitation is mildly annoying. But if you’re only using one or two of those devices, it’s unlikely to matter much.

While searching for a good Black Friday hi-fi deal can be tricky, this year, however, I found a truly great one.

One of the most exciting hi-fi deals – and my personal favourite – has been this massive £250 discount on the five-star Arcam A5, bringing the original £749 price down to just £499 at Richer Sounds. That's an astounding price for this integrated amp.

The Arcam A5 is a brilliant stereo amplifier that rejuvenated the Arcam brand two years ago, and it was bestowed with a What Hi-Fi? Award not long after we reviewed it. Its modern, minimal look with the yellow accents and its terrific sonic performance won us over, and I think it's one of the best amplifiers for under £1000 we've tested in the last few years.

We found the A5 to be pretty unfussy with partnering when we tested it, so I went in search of a CD player, a turntable, a streamer and some speakers that would do justice to the A5's performance.

And guess what? I ended up with a fantastic hi-fi system that even I'd be tempted to buy.

All three sources I've chosen are also enjoying a Black Friday deal, which makes this system an even better value proposition, while the speakers are a pair we've been raving about all year – but they don't have any reductions in their price. But it doesn't matter: these standmounts are so good and are such a great fit with the Arcam, that it would be wrong to recommend anything else.

Ultimately, while it's great to find superb hi-fi separates on a great discount, it's even better to ensure you have the right products that match each other sonically and deliver the best performance overall.

What Hi-Fi? Award-winning? Check. Great performance? Check. Affordable? Check.

This long-running CD player remains a firm recommendation, with its punchy, open, dynamic and clean sound coupled with an excellent build quality that feels far more expensive than its relatively modest price point. It is smooth-running as a CD player, too.

The Arcam CD5 would be the natural partner to the A5 amp, but that one is rather pricey at £699. The Marantz is a solid alternative that won't disappoint.

This Sony WH-1000XM5 wireless headphones deal has saved my friends and me from a huge Black Friday disappointment

Before the start of Black Friday, I prepared my friends – most of whom were asking for the best wireless headphones to buy this Black Friday – to be ready for a deal on the Sony WH-1000XM4. As these headphones are now over five years old, yet still remarkably talented, I had huge expectations for a massive Black Friday discount.

Alas, there hasn't really been a deal worth shouting about. Sure, the XM4 wireless headphones are down to £178 at Amazon, which is a nice saving, but I was expecting more.

With the official Black Friday sales now being well established, I began to lose hope. It looked like none of Sony's five-star flagship headphone series would drop to a price that I could heartily recommend to my friends. As I mentioned in my original feature, we're a group of mid-20s living in London, so we don't have cash to burn.

I was ready to throw in the towel and tell my friends not to bother, but then a Black Friday miracle happened.

Just as it looked like all hope had been lost, Amazon has delivered what can only be described as an absolute banger of a deal, and it's on a newer and, in many ways, better pair of headphones.

In a surprise twist, the Sony WH-1000XM5 are the headphones I'm now recommending to my friends, as they are now hugely discounted to just £150. We initially reviewed this pair of headphones at £380, and since the launch of the WH-1000XM6 earlier this year, the price has slowly come down, with Amazon quoting a recent price of £260.

Regardless of how you look at it, that is an incredible deal; in fact, these headphones ar now cheaper than their predecessors.

This Amazon deal knocks the XM5 headphones down to a ludicrously low price. This newly released version, which swaps the hard shell case out for a soft case, is functionally identical to the model we reviewed and gave five stars to, so you can expect impeccable clarity, punchy bass, and impressive dynamics.View Deal

You'll notice that these are labelled as the WH-1000XM5SA, which is a slightly different model number from the original model. This is because Sony gave these headphones a light refresh that swaps the hard-shell case of the originals for a soft carrying bag. Otherwise, we've been assured that these are the same headphones.

Sony has a habit of doing this: tweaking a couple of minor things and attaching a new model number to their existing products, and dropping the price while doing so. We've seen the company do something similar with the Bravia 8 OLED TV, which now has a cheaper counterpart in the form of the Bravia 8A.

Regardless, these headphones will deliver the same excellent sonic capabilities of the standard XM5 headphones, including punchy, agile and precise bass mixed with top-notch clarity and top-notch timing.

This comes with a host of creature comforts, including a claimed 30-hour battery life, and a ten-minute charge via a supported USB PD charging brick will enable five hours of listening time if that battery runs flat.

On a personal level, I prefer the design of the WH-1000XM4 as I found these cans to be sturdier and easier to travel with as they fold away, which the XM5 do not, but the build remains sleek and premium regardless of how you look at it.

These are a seriously talented pair of headphones, and they happen to be the cheapest way to gain access to Sony's stellar flagship WH-1000XM range currently. This year's WH-1000XM6 are currently retailing for £299 at Amazon, which is a considerable step up.

I've already spread the news that these headphones are on sale to every group chat I can think of, and multiple friends of mine are now scrambling to Amazon to snatch up this deal.

If I were a betting man, I'd guess that this deal will sell out quickly (much like the Apple AirPods Pro 2 deal I missed out on by not being quick enough), so I wouldn't hesitate if these headphones are on your wishlist.

If you are one of the lucky few with room for a full-fat, multi-speaker surround sound setup for your home cinema, then we have two bits of good news.

Black Friday’s vinyl deals are here – and I’m stunned (but not for the reason you might think)

It's clear there's still plenty of interest in vinyl during the Black Friday sales period and in the run-up to Christmas.

The 'vinyl revival' is frankly old news and the popularity of records with young and old music lovers is clearly not a passing fad.

Amazon's vinyl records section is joining in the Black Friday fun, offering 3 for £66 on selected records. And that's what stopped me in my tracks.

Was it a typo? Should it actually be 6 for £33? How about 30 records? I'm exaggerating but as someone who has been buying vinyl for three decades, could it really be that 3 records for £66 represents a great deal?

To paraphrase Principal Skinner from The Simpsons, 'Is it me who is out of touch? No, the price of vinyl really does seem to have gone through the roof.'

Of course, the rise in prices hadn't completely passed me by, but now that that the regularity of my vinyl purchases has slowed from a steady stream to a drip, I really was shocked to see that the cost of a new album can be the wrong side of £30. This does make '3 for £66' seem more tempting.

And it's not just Amazon. The monster that is Record Store Day has now spread its tentacles into Black Friday and, while your local record shop experience may differ (and I'd urge you to go in and find out), a quick look on the Rough Trade website sees full-price releases at £40. If you have your eye on a double LP (let alone triple or more), then naturally the price rises further.

Rising production costs play a huge factor but it's hard not to think that record labels and artists are also making hay while the sun shines.

It's no surprise, then, that many people prefer buying second-hand vinyl – like my colleague, Chris Burke, who declared old is gold when it comes to record shopping.

Sites such as Discogs (which reported that vinyl was around 24 per cent more expensive than five years ago) are a mecca for fans of first pressings and checking matrix numbers, while auction sites such as eBay are also worth a look, though you need to take care when checking the quality of what you're buying.

Regardless of these inflating prices, I will always sing the praises of spinning vinyl. If you want the latest releases, it seems you're really going to have to pay for it, but for real bargain hunters, there's always the secondhand market – online and of course in stores.

And if you're completely on board with the cost of vinyl in 2025, then you might just want to take advantage of that 3 for £66 Black Friday sale after all. Meanwhile, I will probably dust-off something from my existing collection...

The KEF XIO is the best premium Dolby Atmos soundbar – regardless of Black Friday price shenanigans

As an enthusiast publication for cinephiles and audiophiles, we know some people just want the best of the best, regardless of how much it costs.

And while we factor performance-per-pound into our buying advice, if you fall into that camp and want a new soundbar right now, I have some tailored words of wisdom.

Specifically, if you’re looking for the best possible audio from a Dolby Atmos soundbar and aren't interested in expanding to a system, let alone a full-fat multi-speaker 5.1.2 setup, just buy the KEF XIO.

Yep, if you have the cash and are willing to pay for it, that’s my advice. Stop reading, jump over to one of the specialist retailers stocking it (which include Richer Sounds, Peter Tyson, Sevenoaks Sound and Vision and KEF direct) and pay the standard £1999.

Trust me, if the best audio possible from a single box soundbar solution is top of your priority list, after months of testing, the What Hi-Fi? team and I are 100 per cent sure it’s the one to get, right now. Hence why we gave it a five-star rating, prime position in our best Dolby Atmos soundbars guide and a What Hi-Fi? Award.

And yes, that advice carries even if some rivals, including the Senheisser Ambeo Max, it dethroned earlier this year, have been discounted by £500, retailing for £1499 at Richer Sounds right now.

Why? Because the XIO is the best option from a pure performance perspective, making it the better option for its intended market (people like me) even right now, at full price. It’s the current benchmark for premium Atmos soundbars because it offers the best audio we’ve experienced.

Featuring innovative tech you won’t find anywhere else, it offers a tight, agile low-end performance and holistically detailed and precise sound that will get even the most discerning of cinephiles fully immersed in what’s playing out on screen. As we said in our review:

“KEF says that it wants the soundbar to effectively act as a hi-fi package wrapped up in one product, and it has achieved that. Put simply, it is one of the best soundbars we have heard.”

So if you want the best experience possible, just go for that. Or, if that’s a little over budget, but you insist on having the best, save your money and wait until you can afford it. That’s my advice, pure and simple, for serious enthusiasts.

My only word of warning is that this advice is for “enthusiasts”, not regular people. If you don’t fall into that camp, and still want a good, but not quite that good/expensive soundbar, don’t fret – there are other options.

As I said earlier, for newbies or cash-strapped buyers, the Hisense AX5125H is a game-changer, being the first affordable soundbar system that’s capable of delivering good audio. And it’s currently discounted to £189 on Amazon.

Or if you want something between the two, there’s the Sonos Arc Ultra. This is a great option and the 'bar one we recommend to most people as it offers solid, albeit not XIO-level, performance and costs a lot less – especially at its current discounted price of £799 on Amazon (save £200).

This Technics streaming system still has a Cyber Monday discount, but I can't see past this cheaper, better alternative

Cyber Monday might have officially taken over from Black Friday, but there are still plenty of hi-fi deals to take advantage of if you're lucky enough to be in the market for an upgrade or a completely new setup.

Truth be told, if you were so inclined, you could build yourself a tidy system of separates from all the Cyber Monday deals still live, but what if you need your next hi-fi system to be a little bit more convenient?

I've seen two deals on all-in-one set-ups that tick the convenience box, but only one of them has the performance and sound quality that I can get behind.

The Technics SC-CX700 and KEF LS50 Wireless II both offer such a solution, and both look like great prospects on paper. I’ve tested both, though, and think only one of these is where my money would go this Cyber Monday.

Currently, the KEF LS50 wireless can be yours for £1499 at Peter Tyson and Smart Home Sounds, which is £700 off their usual £2199 asking price.

The Technics are available for £1499 at Peter Tyson and Sevenoaks S&V, which is a big £900 saving on their £2399 launch price.

The KEF LS50 Wireless II combine speakers, amplification and a wealth of streaming smarts into a fantastic all-round package. Throw in an HDMI eARC socket, UPnP connectivity, file support up to 24-bit/384kHz and a £751 discount, and you have quite the system on your hands.
What Hi-Fi? Award-winnerView Deal

Both systems have a streaming engine at their heart. If you’re looking to buy a system like these, you’re likely to be using Tidal, Spotify, Qobuz or Amazon Music as your main source of tunes, and both pairs of speakers accommodate all manner of streaming options.

However, having tested both side-by-side, I can’t really look past the KEF pair.

The Technics look good from a distance, especially with their fancy microfibre-clad side panels, but get closer and the plastics used look and feel cheaper. The back panels are a little untidy, and the touch controls are a little unclear.

Contrast this with the KEFs, which look and feel more premium, with neatly highlighted touch controls on their top panel and smooth, curved heat-sinks. To my eyes at least, the KEF Uni-Q driver looks more striking than the Technics’ similar coaxial arrangement, too.

The Technics pair offers auto-calibration to help you get set up quickly, but I actually found it made the speakers sound worse than going through the process manually. It’s manual all the way with the KEFs, but it’s pretty straightforward to add their positions.

Both pairs use a very similar-looking control app, but it's the KEF Connect app which feels slicker and less laggy – you need to take this into account as you could be interacting with it quite a bit.

I’m not completely down about the Technics, though. When I heard both pairs together, I was impressed with the quality and quantity of bass the Technics can produce. In my opinion, they sound more powerful and better defined when spitting out beats.

However, I also found they sounded a little rough around the edges and lacking dynamism, which takes the shine off what they do in other areas.

As we said in our Technics SC-CX700 review, “The combination of that troublesome coarseness, mixed with a lack of dynamic thrust and finesse means they don’t really encourage you to hang around and wait for the next track to play."

The KEFs, on the other hand, sound more refined, sophisticated, and they create a wonderfully expansive stereo image. In our KEF LS50 Wireless II review we said they sit among “the most thrilling speaker systems we’ve heard”.

High praise indeed, and with £700 off for Black Friday at Peter Tyson and Sevenoaks S&V,, I think anyone looking for a convenient, and ridiculously capable all-in-one hi-fi system should give the KEFs serious consideration.

Buying your first turntable? These are the six key features to look for in the Black Friday sales

Around 30 years ago, the turntable market appeared all but dead. The CD had won the format war in the late ‘80s, and the iconic vinyl record seemed condemned to the hi-fi graveyard.

We even removed the turntable category from our What Hi-Fi? Awards categories, which should have been the final nail in the coffin if even enthusiasts weren’t interested.

Yet somehow, turntables survived. In the age of streaming, the humble record player is alive and thriving, as seen in the huge resurgence in vinyl’s popularity (in no small part thanks to Taylor Swift).

This does, of course, mean that plenty of new music fans are jumping on the turntable bandwagon, and if that's you, then you may need some guidance making the right decision.

So if you’re looking to get your very first turntable this Black Friday, here are some tips to get you spinning your vinyl collection in no time.

1. Check to see if a phono stage is included

Turntables need a bit of special treatment and won’t work by being plugged directly into an amplifier’s standard line-level input, in the way a music streamer or CD player would.

The tiny signal from the record player’s cartridge needs extra amplification and tonal equalisation, and that’s a job for the phono stage, or phono preamp as it is sometimes called.

You will either need a phono stage (marked as a 'phono' connection) on your amplifier – some, but not all, have them – or a phono stage built-in to your turntable itself.

If you’re plugging directly into an all-in-one speaker system, such as KEF’s LSX II, you will need an outboard phono stage. Again, unless your chosen record player has a phono stage built in.

2. Automatic or manual?

If you’re new to turntables and concerned about dropping a needle onto your LP, you might want to consider a record player with automatic operation.

There are fully and semi-automatic designs; the fully automatic ones will queue up the tonearm to the start of the record and lift the needle when it reaches the end of the side, all with the push of a button. Some even return the arm to its resting position.

However, if you want to get more tactile with your turntable, then a manual turntable might be better for you. This does mean having to place the arm yourself and returning it at the end, though many argue that it’s part of the appeal.

3. Two-speed or three-speed?

All modern records play at two standard speeds: 33 ⅓ RPM (for LPs) and 45 RPM (for singles, usually).

However, records from before 1960 play at a faster speed: 78 RPM. So if you have any old classics you’d like to play or are likely to go vintage record shopping, you’ll want to ensure you have a turntable that can play all three speeds.

If you’re sticking only to more modern vinyl, a two-speed turntable should cover you just fine.

Many purist record players still require the user to change speed by manually moving the drive belt from one motor pulley step to another. It’s not hard to do, but a deck with electronic switching between the speeds might appeal to some buyers more.

4. Bluetooth or not to Bluetooth

It may seem like the ultimate clash of old and new, but Bluetooth turntables are now common, blending the retro aesthetic with modern convenience.

It makes sense when products such as wireless headphones and Bluetooth speakers are so widespread, and if you want a bit more flexibility in how you listen to your records.

While you’ll always get better sound quality from a wired connection, if you think you’ll make use of the Bluetooth functionality, then it’s worth considering.

Bluetooth headphones can be particularly handy when you don’t want to disturb others in your household (such as late-night listening), so it’s definitely worth considering when and how you’d use your turntable.

5. Direct drive or belt drive?

There are two types of turntable design: belt drive and direct drive.

Direct drive turntables have the motor located beneath the platter, which rotates it directly. Belt drive turntables have the motor separate, with a thin rubber belt linking the motor to the platter.

Both have their pros and cons. Direct drive designs start up much quicker and usually have greater speed stability, the former making them the design of choice for DJs. Belt drives have the advantage of separating the inherently noisy motor from the record/cartridge interface, so they have an advantage when it comes to sound quality.

Bear in mind that when a brand chooses a certain drive configuration, it accounts for these imperfections and tries to minimise any side effects.

We’re fans of both designs (we love both Rega’s belt drive Planar 3 and the Technics’ direct drive SL-1500C), so there’s no wrong answer here – what’s most important is that you’re happy with how your turntable sounds.

6. Consider an upgradeable cartridge

The cartridge is the only part of a turntable that makes direct physical contact with the record groove. Most affordable turntables come complete with one, though that changes as price points go up and users want to fine-tune the record player’s performance for their system.

A cartridge change is usually the first port of call when the time for upgrading arrives. They aren’t particularly hard to swap, but a dealer will usually do the job for you if required. If you're considering spending a fair amount of money on a turntable, then think about the cartridge on offer, too.

Which turntable should you buy?

Now you know what to look for, here are a couple of recommendations from our expert hi-fi team.

Pro-Ject Primary E

For the ultimate combination of budget and beginner, you’ll struggle to do better than the Pro-Ject Primary E.

The eight-time (!) What Hi-Fi? Award winner is a no-frills, purist design, meaning it eschews several more modern features such as Bluetooth or automatic operation in favour of nailing the basics.

And by the basics, we mean the sound, which is clear, clean and spacious with ample body and substance to every frequency.

Additionally, it’s easy to set up and use, and has been our go-to beginner recommendation for years now, despite launching back in 2018. You’ll need to budget for a phono stage, but the Pro-Ject Primary E is great value and can often be seen on sale.

Sony PS-LX310BT

If you’d rather have a few features included but still desire good performance and build quality, then the Sony PS-LX310BT is a good compromise. The Sony turntable offers Bluetooth, automatic operation and a built-in phono stage, and is otherwise fuss-free, making it super easy to set up and work straight out of the box.

The built-in Bluetooth can connect to up to eight devices, and the sound is entertaining and pleasing. There’s no beating the Sony PS-LX310BT for value and user-friendliness. Check out the latest prices below.

Rega Planar 1 Plus

If you’re happy to invest a bit more into your first turntable, then the Rega Planar 1 Plus is an excellent step up from the others on this list. The Rega Planar 1 Plus takes a similar purist, clutter-free approach as the Pro-Ject Primary E, but comes with a phono stage included.

It’s a step up from the Pro-Ject Primary E rhythmically too, with Rega's hallmarks of subtlety, agility, dynamics and drive all on display. It’s easy to set up too, with the built-in phono stage allowing you to plug this Rega deck directly into your all-in-one speaker system.

If you can afford the extra cost, the Rega Planar 1 Plus is an excellent mix of purist quality and convenience, and the best-sounding turntable with a built-in phono stage at this price level.

“I don’t care” (unless it's an OLED) – our hi-fi and home cinema loving readers’ frank response to Black Friday

At the start of the month, we asked if you care about Black Friday. And with the big day finally here, 28 days later, you weren’t shy with your opinion on big tech’s yearly shopping event.

No, you, our dedicated readership of cinephiles and audiophiles, in a rare act of solidarity, were nearly totally united in your message that you don’t like Black Friday and the billionaires pushing it – outside of one big exception.

Here’s what you told us.

You buy what you want, when you want

The consistent message we immediately got is that you don’t like, or are indifferent to Black Friday, especially when buying hi-fi.

This was gruffly stated by reader AndyC405, who was one of the first to reply to our question and wrote: “I don't care about Black Friday – I buy what I want to buy, when I want to buy it.”

AndyC405 was far from alone in his dislike of the event and marketing efforts by big tech manufacturers. Reader MusicSloth argued many of the products being pushed are old and not of interest to “discerning” enthusiasts, such as himself.

“A lot of the products that are heavily discounted during Black Friday Week are usually end-of-line or last year's model that companies are eager to empty out of their warehouses to make room for the latest ranges of new models,” wrote MusicSloth.

“Plus, there is a lot of tat [gotten] rid of by selling to uneducated people who think that if a product has 75 per cent off the RRP, it must be a bargain when in reality it is just rubbish.”

Reader, David Falkner, added it’s always best to buy what you “want” rather than pivot to something else just because it’s slightly cheaper during Black Friday.

“Better to buy something you really need and is more suitable rather than just buying something based on price – no price can make up for a product that falls short once the novelty has worn off.”

Graham Harvey agreed, adding it’s also worth remembering Black Friday is one of many sales events throughout the year so you don't need to limit your shopping to it.

“All of my current kit I've bought at discount prices at various times from a local dealer when in a sale, with the exception of a pre-amp. Black Friday has little to [no] impact on my purchases.”

But there is one exception

Despite the negativity towards hi-fi, there was one category we regularly cover that proved to be an exception with our readers: OLED TVs.

This started with reader, adam.dasz, who told us: “I personally have bought my last two TVs off the back of Black Friday sales. With a slight caveat. Many retailers will offer a price match guarantee within 30 days of purchase. This means if you buy a product for what appears to be a good price, only to see it go cheaper during the Black Friday week, you can go back and reclaim the difference.”

Reader, Simon Tompkins, agreed, telling us, “just with TVs”. But even then, he caveated that most people are best buying when they need a new set, or have spotted one that is a true upgrade on what they currently have, rather than waiting for Black Friday specifically.

Our hot take

Black Friday always brings a lot of tat, as our readers say, but it also always has a few very good deals, on hi-fi as well. Jump over to our best Black Friday hi-fi deals live hub, and you’ll see plenty of examples right now.

But we also agree it’s always worth going slow and steady and remembering you don’t have to buy something during the event. As we said in our Black Friday survival guide, it’s best to be prepared and have a short list of products you’ve researched and that you know meet your needs. Otherwise, you can make a mistake and quickly end up with buyer’s remorse.

We also agree that OLED TVs are one of the most consistent categories that get hefty discounts during Back Friday. This is especially true this year, where we’ve seen amazing savings on the Award-winning LG C5 and Sony Bravia 8 II. We've attached two of the best that are live right now below.

Sonos Ace wireless headphones have hit a record low price, but...

This is an interesting one. You see, we tested the Sonos Ace wireless headphones back when they first launched back in June last year.

Back then, they cost £449, but thanks to Black Friday, they are now sitting at a record low price of £219. Now, on paper, this looks like a bit of a no-brainer.

However, the key criticisms in our three-star Sonos Ace review still stand – they just don't sound as entertaining or as musical as the class leaders, and both their noise-cancelling and call quality are only average.

The class leaders we are talking about include the Sony WH-1000XM5, which can be yours for £200. Despite the Sonos boasting better build quality and matching them on battery life, our money would still go on the Sonys.

Two stunning pairs of B&W headphones are heavily discounted – but which should you pick?

This isn't an easy decision to make: do you pick the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 or Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e? Both five-star wireless over-ears are discounted this Black Friday, with the S2 dropping from £299 to £149 at John Lewis, and the S2e falling from £299 to £196 at John Lewis.

That's a tough choice. The discount for the older S2 is obviously substantially greater, and we suspect that once they're gone, they're gone for good. The S2e boast the same sort of feature set and, let's face it, a pretty similar design to the S2, but they're a step beyond what their de facto predecessors can manage thanks to their entertaining, lush signature. If you value sonic performance, it might be worth paying the extra £50 for the S2e.

The Px7 S2 are nearing the end of their natural lifespan, and as such, their price is collapsing like a shoddily baked wedding cake. Dropping from £299 to £149 represents a drop to half of their original price, but once the Px7 S2 go, we imagine they'll be gone forever. View Deal

The Px7 S2e are the updated edition of the S2, although even they have been supplanted by the lines' full sequel, the Px7 S3. Need more convincing? When we had the Sonos Arc Ultra in our test room, its immersive, room-filling sound performance simply blew us away. We say in our review: "It really is quite amazing how much more crisp, spacious, precise and detailed the Ultra sounds."

You don't need a remote or display to control the Ultra, you just connect it to your TV via HDMI eARC and it becomes your TV's speakers. And while a lack of dedicated HDMI inputs and DTS:X support will bother some people, for others it won't be an issue.

Moving on to the two Sonos Era 300 surrounds included in the deal, the glowing reviews only continue. With its huge scale of engaging sound, wide range of features and seamless Sonos experience, we find that this model is an impressive speaker that can do it all.

Even though we tested the Era 300 with just one speaker, we note that the spread of sound is immense and "projects sound further into the room and overhead more confidently than any other similar wireless speaker we’ve heard."

Under the hood, the arrangement is made up of six drivers – four tweeters (one forward-firing, two side-firing, one upward-firing) and two woofers (angled left and right for stereo playback) – all powered by Class D amplification.

There's a metal grille covering the front and rear driver sections, and touch controls for playback and volume along the top panel, which work beautifully.

Then we come to the Sonos Sub 4. Full disclosure here: we have not had this model in our test room.

It features dual force-cancelling woofers that "virtually eliminate distortion", according to Sonos. It also offers a versatile design that can be placed upright or on its side (depending on your setup). That all bodes well for the model to offer some extra oomph to the sound system as a whole.

“I don’t care about Black Friday! I buy what I want, when I want!” – Grumpy What Hi-Fi? reader, November 2025.

The above is a response we got when we asked our readers about their Black Friday 2025 shopping plans at the start of November.

And yes, it is particularly to the point and ignores the fact that there are undeniably some decent hi-fi deals each year during Black Friday. Jump over to our best Black Friday hi-fi deals live hub, and you’ll see some fresh examples of what I mean.

But, as I stared at the comment, I came to realise that in a lot of ways, they're right. After all, in our Black Friday survival guide, I myself said something similar, urging readers not to fall for the event’s marketing and only buy something they actually want. Trust me, there are very few things you NEED to get in the world of hi-fi…

And I’ve said many times before, during most Black Friday shopping events, the best budget turntable to get is almost always the Pro-Ject Primary E, which is never discounted. It’s remained the best you’ll find for less than £250, even at full price, during most of the Black Fridays and Prime Days I've covered.

But, this year specifically, the comment made me think about the Award-winning Acoustic Energy AE300 Mk2, which, despite my sternly worded letter to big red in the North Pole, are still full price, retailing for £649, despite it being Black Friday week.

Prior to reading the comment, the ongoing lack of a decent discount on the AE300 MK2 had me hovering my mouse cursor over the five-star Wharfedale Diamond 12.3, which have been discounted to £399 on Amazon (save £100).

But our grumpy reader reminded me to practice what I preach and wait for what I actually want.

Sure, the Wharfdale’s are great value and sound sublime compared to most similarly priced rivals (hence their What Hi-Fi? Award win this year).

But being full-sized floorstanders, they’re too big for my space and, being blunt, don’t meet my tastes the same way the Acoustic Energy AE300 Mk2 do.

Regular readers know, I’ve planned to buy a pair since we reviewed them. Their composed, neutral sonic profile, attractive price, unfussy nature and general vibe make them an ideal replacement for the ageing Q Acoustic 3030i in my lounge and an ideal match with my Technics SA-C600 system.

I know because I’ve tried them together and can personally confirm the results are excellent, at least for people with my sonic tastes.

Because of our anonymous commenter's message, I remembered how much I want these specific speakers and need to practice what I preach and not compromise, just because it's Black Friday. I know the speakers I want, and I’ll get them and nothing else, discounts be damned!

I urge all of you to do the same…

For the money, you’ll be treated to a well-made amp with enough muscle to drive any price-appropriate speaker you choose. But, most importantly, one that sounds great. As we said in our review:

Over the last decade, streaming services have increasingly become the most popular way to watch our favourite movies and TV shows. And it's not a real surprise.

One subscription to a platform such as Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV gives you access to a massive catalogue of shows and films, and represents excellent value.

But there is a catch: even the best streaming services can't match the picture and sound quality of a 4K Blu-ray disc. This is thanks to their high bitrate capacity, which ultimately means the image is less compressed and can offer higher levels of detail and contrast.

Apple TV, for instance, which was crowned the best video streaming service at our recent What Hi-Fi? Awards, can only stretch to 45 Mbps. 4K Blu-ray discs, on the other hand, can exceed bitrates of 100 Mbps.

One of the discounted discs that immediately caught our eye is Scarface, which has gone down from £30 to £20 at Amazon.

For those not in the know, the 1983 release follows a Cuban-born gangster (played by Al Pacino) as he descends into addiction, obsession and brutality, with grisly consequences. In Peter Bradshaw's review for The Guardian, he dubbed the film "a must-see for Pacino's potent and influential performance".

Fancy something more modern? You may have seen that Guillermo Del Toro's adaptation of Frankenstein recently stormed the charts on Netflix.

But there's another adapted release from the director that is certainly worth watching in all its 4K glory. Del Toro's version of Pinocchio is available for £18 (or £18.05 to be precise) at Amazon, saving you over £7.

It's a beautiful take on the traditional fairy tale, digging further into Geppetto's complex relationship with the titular puppet/boy. Critics and audiences alike rated it highly, with a 96 per cent score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and 89 on the Popcornmeter.

It had a limited cinema release before being put straight onto Netflix, so this deal offers a great opportunity to watch the touching animated movie in the best quality possible.

Another particularly tempting deal (although it is only available for US customers) is on The Princess Bride, which is available for half its original price, dropping from $50 down to $25 at Amazon.

When all else fails, you can always rely on some seriously huge Black Friday projector deals to crop up during the savings event. We've seen huge savings on Sony, Epson and Xgimi projectors already; however, this Hisense deal might just take the proverbial cake.

Capable of beaming an image up to 150 inches onto your projector screen or, in a pinch, your wall, the PL2 offers up a feast of impressive picture and sound credentials.

This UST utilises Hisense's X-Fusion Laser Technology, which is capable of producing a bright 2700 lumen image, with punchy and vibrant colours to match. Despite this, we considered the PL2 to be balanced and consistent in our full review, and the 4K resolution means details are sharp.

Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are both supported, which is appreciated as many projectors include neither, and Dolby Atmos is featured via the 30W speaker system, as well as via HDMI eARC.

Better still, Hisense includes its comprehensive Vidaa streaming platform on board, meaning you won't need to plug anything into the PL2 if streaming is your preferred method of watching.

The only area where the PL2 lags slightly behind is its gaming specifications. HDMI 2.1 is technically on board, but the projector can only reach 60Hz at 4K, or 120Hz at 1080p.

There is also an included game mode, which is automatically applied when the projector detects a signal from a gaming source. Ultimately, at this price, we find that small gaming-related setback to be far from a dealbreaker.

At its launch price of £1999, we already considered this projector to offer huge value for money. However, at just £959 – a discount of £1040 – this becomes one of the best value home cinema deals of the year.

I’ve been waiting all year for Technics’ Award-winning earbuds to get a decent discount – and it’s finally happened

Serious music fan looking for a pair of wireless earbuds capable of delivering a transparent, but engaging sound? Then I’d strongly suggest looking at Amazon’s current Black Friday deal on the Technics EAH-AZ100.

The deal is live on Amazon right now and lets you grab the five-star, Award-winning earbuds for £209.99 (save £49).

Why the Technics when they’re still more expensive than key rivals, including the five-star Bose Quiet Comfort Earbuds, which are currently selling for £129 and Sony WF-1000XM5, which are retailing for £179 on Amazon? There are two reasons.

First, because, having heard the earbuds when our audio and hi-fi team reviewed them earlier this year, for me, their sonic talents justify the added expense.

Though many earbuds this year have their charms, the Technics sonic profile is uniquely suited to my tastes, with me generally favouring a controlled, transparent performance that doesn’t favour any part of the frequency range too much.

And that’s exactly what the Technics deliver. Thanks to the use of a new 10mm “Magnetic Fluid Driver”, the earbuds offer a clear, spacious sound that gives every part of a track space to breathe.

Whether it was the soft groove of jazz legend Jaco Pastorius’ fretless bass during Tracy or the complex, intertwining guitar parts in The Cure’s epic Pictures of You, the Technics EAH-AZ100 delivered a fine performance that had me fully immersed in the music in a way that rivals that I’ve used this year couldn’t.

As our audio experts said in our review: “It’s the elevated performance that combines the Technics’ strengths of clarity, detail and spaciousness with the punch, presence and dynamic impact we were hoping for that clinches the deal.”

So while they may not be class leaders at ANC, or the cheapest flagship option right now, and yes, some rivals may offer a richer bass and more propulsive dynamics, I think they justify the added cost.

The second is that this is the first proper discount I’ve spotted on them. Since hearing the Technics, I’ve been watching their price like a hawk, waiting for them to drop.

And until now, outside of a very short sale during the start of the month, they’ve belligerently refused to budge from their launch price – as you can see in the below graph.

Which is why I’d suggest any music fan with similar sonic tastes consider getting the Technics EAH-AZ100 deal currently running.

As the name suggests, the Sonos Arc Ultra replaces the Sonos Arc as the company's flagship Dolby Atmos soundbar. This is no mean feat, considering that the original Sonos Arc is a multi-year Award-winner we'd still recommend today.

However, the Arc Ultra incorporates several improvements to make it the go-to soundbar from the audio giant. First up is the design, with the Arc Ultra being smaller and lighter than its predecessor, making it easier for wall mounting and home cinema placement.

The Arc Ultra also boasts a 9.1.4 channel configuration, as well as a 'Sound Motion' speaker that Sonos claims can double the bass output of the original Arc. All of which makes for a sound that is definitely punchier and more tuneful.

In terms of connectivity, there's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support as well as an HDMI eARC output to easily connect to your TV. We would have liked to have seen a few more HDMI sockets, but that won't be a huge issue for most people.

Ever since it graced our test rooms last year, the Sonos Arc Ultra has been one of the soundbars to beat for an immersive, single unit Dolby Atmos experience. It was a great product at its launch price – but with £200 off at Currys the Sonos Arc Ultra comes highly recommended.

You may be missing out on the lowest price this Black Friday – unless you remember this one trick

Not all Black Friday deals are created equal. While a discount might seem like a good deal, you could still be missing the lowest price - which is never ideal but especially not over Black Friday.

But there's a simple trick that will make sure you're always getting the best possible price. It only takes a few seconds, and at one retailer, it will save you £700 on one product alone, for exactly the same device. That's worth a few seconds of anyone's time. Let me explain.

All you have to do is check the price of each colour variant. See, we told you it was simple. It will only take a few seconds, even for products with loads of different finishes, and it could save you an absolute packet.

The KEF LS50 Wireless II, for example, costs £2199 at Peter Tyson in the Sandshell and Moss Green Finishes, but £1799 in Mineral White and Carbon Black. But that's not the best saving. Buy it in Titanium Grey, and you'll pay just £1499 – a whopping £700 less than you could be paying. And all from the same retailer!

Now the LS50 Wireless II is a fantastic all-in-one system – so much so that we gave it an Award this year. But that doesn't justify spending £700 more than you have to.

This deal is on the Award-winning JBL Flip 7, which is £80 in black or blue, but as much as £98 in its other finishes. That's a saving of £18, and the only difference is the colour.

The JBL Flip 7 is a well made, travel-friendly and great sounding speaker wrapped up in an incredibly-priced 'burrito' shaped design. We thought it might drop by £20 or £30 on the day of Black Friday, so this £50 discount is nothing short of miraculous.

If you want the latest, shiniest B&O gear, the Beosound A1 (3rd Gen) is just as lovely as its predecessor. It loses Alexa capabilities, and rivals will offer more sonic bang for your buck, but the newer A1 remains sonically talented, especially in the midrange, while cementing its status as one of the most beautifully made Bluetooth speakers on the market.

With the death knell on Black Friday sounded, I’d still recommend this Dolby Atmos upgrade to friends during Cyber Monday

Black Friday 2025 has come and gone, and with the hour approaching midday, Cyber Monday is officially middle-aged, which means the window to take advantage of this year’s deals bonanza is rapidly closing.

And having been here from the start, endlessly searching for all the best home cinema deals to be had, I can safely confirm, my advice from the start hasn’t changed.

Yes, despite decent savings on our 2025 Product of the Year winner, the Sony Bravia 8 II, a stellar discount on the 55-inch LG C5 and incredible savings on the 48-inch Samsung S90F, I’m still not recommending an OLED to my friends and family this year.

Why not you ask? Well, as I said earlier this month, it has nothing to do with the quality of this year’s TVs. Jump to our best OLED TV guide, and you’ll see there have been a lot of great sets launched this year.

It’s because all of my nearest and dearest already pulled the trigger on a new OLED in the past few years. And, if you find yourself in the same situation, that means I have one very different piece of advice – one that has nothing to do with your TV.

Have you thought about getting a Dolby Atmos soundbar system?

This year, the piece of advice I'm giving to most of my friends and family relates to their audio setup.

Unlike What Hi-Fi?’s regular readers, many of my friends, even those with OLED TVs, haven’t properly backed them up with a decent sound system. Yes, the philistines are still using their TVs' built-in speakers, despite my nagging.

And yes, I have been telling them for years to at least invest in a soundbar – screaming from the rooftops, 'Yes, a Sonos Beam (Gen 2) will sound better than your TV's built-in speakers!'.

What’s different this year is that I’ve become even more demanding, and I’ve elevated my ‘get a soundbar’ advice to ‘have you thought about a soundbar system?’.

And there’s one big reason for that. Specifically, for the first time ever, we’ve found an affordable, entry-level Dolby Atmos soundbar system worthy of recommending, in the shape of the five-star, Award-winning Hisense AX5125H, which is available for £189 on Amazon right now (save £60).

The AX5125H is the only "cheap" Dolby Atmos soundbar system we've found worth recommending. For not a lot, you get a fully functioning, good-sounding system that's better than 99% of TVs' built-in speakers on every level.View Deal

It may not have a catchy name or look fancy, but this is a big deal. Soundbar systems aren't new, and we’ve had plenty of cheaper units pass through our test rooms, but nothing below the £500/$500 mark has managed to wow us.

Which is why, when another affordable system came in for testing, the home cinema team wasn't exactly fighting over themselves to review it.

TV and AV editor, Tom Parsons, took on the job. And, days later, pigs flew.

Tom emerged from our basement test room and came to find his colleague, Lewis Empson. 'Could you come and check something with me?', he asked.

Moments later, they both reappeared and the process repeated, with various members of staff, myself included, all being called down to the basement to check Tom wasn't imagining things.

And each time, after an extended listen, we all found ourselves nodding in agreement. We had indeed finally succeeded and found an affordable, great-sounding soundbar system not just worthy of a five-star rating, but ultimately a What Hi-Fi? Award as well.

As we said in our Hisense AX5125H review: “The fact that you can get this much kit with these specs for this price is really rather impressive – the fact that it actually sounds good is pretty astonishing.”

So much so that I’m actually recommending this system to most people over the Sonos Beam (Gen 2), with its satellites and subwoofer adding a layer of directionality missing from our previous budget soundbar recommendation.

Above it, things are simpler, with Samsung’s flagship HW-Q990F system, which is a fellow Award winner, offering the best Dolby Atmos experience you can get without investing in a full-fat 5.1.2 multi-speaker setup.

Currently selling for £818 (save £881) on Amazon, trust me, the Samsung HW-Q990F is worth the investment if you have the cash.

Which third and finally brings me on to my advice for those with a decent, modern soundbar looking for an upgrade this Black Friday.

I’m suggesting people with compatible, modern soundbars think about making the upgrade to a system setup this year.

If you own a Sonos Arc or Arc Ultra, adding a couple of Sonos Era 100 or (if you’re feeling flush) Sonos Era 300 speakers as satellites will truly take your sound to the next level. We’ve tried the setup, and while it ain’t cheap, it is rather good.

Or, if you have a Sennheiser Ambeo or a recent Sony Bravia series soundbar, many offer wireless satellite speakers and subs as add-on options.

If your model is compatible, why not pick some satellites and a sub and level up your movie audio without replacing your main 'bar?

Trust me, when done right, rear speakers make all the difference with surround sound – which, as any serious movie fan knows, is just as important as a decent picture for a properly immersive home movie experience.

It's for all these reasons that I’d urge you to consider splurging on a soundbar system, or upgrading your current soundbar, over replacing your TV this Black Friday. It's a great way to up the home cinema ante, without splashing out on a new screen.

The Sony A80L is a highly regarded OLED TV amongst the AV team here at What Hi-Fi?. It held a spot in our reference home cinema system for well over a year before being replaced by its successor, the equally brilliant Sony Bravia 8, and it's also the TV that I use every single day.

Despite being over two years old, stock appears to have resurfaced just in time for Black Friday, meaning you can snag the 55-inch version for £1044 at Amazon; not a bad deal when you consider that we reviewed it at a whopping £2399.

It's still a fantastic TV, and it gives many 2025 models a run for their money when it comes to picture and sound performance, but it's not the TV that I would recommend buying this Black Friday.

Instead, I'll continue pointing buyers towards the spectacular 55-inch LG OLED C5, as it's a newer, more affordable, and feature-rich TV that delivers a seriously competitive picture performance – and it can be yours for just £989 at Amazon.

The LG C5 is a real crowd pleaser. Its rich, dynamic and sharp image is spectacular for movies and TV shows, and the fact that it has four HDMI 2.1 sockets (all capable of handling 4K/144Hz signals) will undoubtedly appease gamers. Throw in Dolby Vision HDR support and the full-featured webOS smart platform for streaming movies and games directly to the TV for good measure, and you have a TV that is guaranteed to impress, especially at this price. With a staggering £911 discount attached, the C5 remains my top recommendation for prospective TV buyers this year. It's a versatile and hugely talented television that's guaranteed to impress.

It features a slightly brighter OLED panel compared to last year's C4 OLED (also a five-star TV), as well as LG's Alpha 9 Gen 8 processor, which runs the latest version of webOS for comprehensive streaming, gaming and lifestyle app support.

Cinephiles will swoon over the C5's crisp, contrast-rich and vibrant image, which balances punchy and authenticity with impressive finesse. We compared the C5 and Sony A80L directly against one another in our C5 55-inch review, finding that the two TVs delivered a similarly brilliant performance with impressively sharp and three-dimensional images.

Moreover, it's a superb choice for gamers, thanks to the inclusion of four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 sockets; comparatively, the Sony A80L only features two, both of which are occupied on the TV in my living room. Furthermore, the C5 supports a slightly higher refresh rate of 144Hz, which makes it more compelling for PC gamers.

The C5 does take a back foot against the Sony A80L in one instance, however. When it comes to built-in audio, the C5 is wholly unremarkable, delivering a fairly thin and uninspiring sound, whereas the Sony is much more spacious, detailed and weighty.

Regardless, we'll repeat our usual guidance when it comes to built-in TV speakers: budget for a Dolby Atmos soundbar if you can. The Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is a superb option, and it's on sale for just £335 at Amazon.

While the Sony A80L is still a TV that has countless admirable qualities, I'm convinced that the C5 is the better buy in this instance. The £55 saving is already a compelling reason, but with the LG being two years newer than the Sony, I believe it's also a smarter long-term investment.

I'm hoping this Award-winning speaker gets its first-ever discount on Black Friday

Black Friday is a time for one-offs. It's a time when products drop to their lowest-ever prices. A time when retailers shift unprecedented shedloads of stock before the Christmas rush. A time when you'll happily fork out £525 for a Lego Millennium Falcon because it's usually £735 and you've convinced yourself, at the age of 30, that it represents outstanding value and will, finally, fill that yawning chasm in your soul.

I'm hoping for that same spirit of novelty to visit the Audio Pro C20 W this Black Friday. The Award-winning wireless speaker has yet to enjoy any significant discounts since it arrived earlier this year, but there's no better time than right now for the stellar Swiss Army Knife of a speaker to enjoy a proper drop. The time feels right.

Target deal price: £399
The new Audio Pro C20 W hasn't enjoyed a proper discount yet, but there's plenty of reason to suspect that it might drop on the day of Black Friday itself. The outgoing C20 enjoyed regular £50 drops whenever there was a sales period going on, so there's no reason to believe (aside from its relative newness) that the 'W' edition won't also plummet. What's the appeal of the Audio Pro C20 W, then? After all, there are plenty of wireless speakers enjoying Black Friday discounts right now: the Sonos Era 100, the Sonos Era 300, a raft of JBLs, the list goes on.

Well, it's an Award-winner for one thing. The 'W' edition builds on the legacy of the outgoing Audio Pro C20, building on the original model’s host of talents and functionalities by offering more potent performance and even more accessible platform from which to operate it, all without bumping up the price.

In that sense, it's job done and then some. The C20 W really is a do-it-all unit, offering physical connections, the C20 W offers a set of RCA inputs, a moving magnet phono stage, an optical input for digital sources and an HDMI ARC for once again hooking it up to your TV. There’s also a sub out option, so you can boost your bass by adding a subwoofer if you want.

Wireless support is also hugely impressive. AirPlay 2 and Google Cast are both on the menu for wireless playback up to 24-bit/96kHz, while Bluetooth 5.0 is also on offer. You get access to Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect, as well as Audio Pro’s own multi-room offering, so you can have a variety of speakers all connected in your personal abode.

You don't win What Hi-Fi? Awards without having the performance to match. The Audio Pro C20 W is impressively talented across the sonic spectrum, building its church on a spacious, open sound with shining clarity and ample detail, all anchored by a well-controlled bass output.

The middle frequencies are great, too. As we said in our review: "The well-integrated midrange is a highlight, sounding cohesive enough to be a part of the ensemble but distinct enough to shine on its own terms, allowing for vocal passages to come to the fore with sufficient personality and brio to keep us engaged".

If you're seeking something that's as happy performing as a soundbar as it is being your standalone speaker, the C20 W should be on your shortlist. Save this page and check back on Black Friday itself – you never know...

I’ve combined super-cheap TV and soundbar Black Friday deals to build a five-star Mini LED and Dolby Atmos system

Owning a complete home cinema system is the stuff of dreams, isn't it?

But did you realise you could buy such a thing for a little over £500 this Black Friday?

Well, it's true! By combining two amazing Black Friday deals – on five-star components, no less – I've built a system that includes a 4K Mini LED TV and a complete Dolby Atmos soundbar system for just £538.

The TCL 50C6KS is our favourite budget 50-inch TV – and it has the What Hi-Fi? Awards 2025 gong to prove it.

What really wins you over is the picture: deep, inky blacks – rare on a sub-£500 TV – combined with really strong brightness and vivid, convincing colours thanks to its Mini LED backlight and Quantum Dot panel.

Shadows look rich, HDR highlights pop nicely, and there’s a surprisingly good amount of detail even in dark or complex scenes.

On top of that, it supports the full spread of HDR formats – HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG – so you can access all of your content in the highest possible quality.

Google TV is built in, so all of the big, global services (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, etc.) are ready to go, and TCL has gone out of its way to add all of the UK's main catch-up apps, including BBC iPlayer.

Not that you'll need it, but the built-in sound also over-delivers for the money: surprisingly detailed, decently spacious and with Dolby Atmos support – more than you’d expect at this price.

Sure, it isn’t perfect: the screen is 60 Hz only, so it can't handle 4K/120Hz gaming (though the gaming experience is otherwise very good, it has to be said).

Motion is also a little soft, and on rare, extremely bright highlights, there’s a little clipping or slightly blatant dimming-zone transitions.

But honestly, those felt like tiny trade-offs at the full price of £419, let alone the Black Friday price of £349 at Amazon.

The Dolby Atmos soundbar system

You no longer have to spend a fortune and mix-and-match lots of different components to get a full home cinema system. Instead, you can get it all in one box, and for less than £200.

The one-box system I'm referring to is the Dolby Atmos-friendly Hisense AX5125H.

This isn't just a soundbar, but a full 5.1.2-channel system that includes a soundbar, a wireless subwoofer and two wireless surround speakers.

The result isn’t just louder than your TV’s built-in speakers, it’s genuinely cinematic: Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks come alive with solid impact, plenty of bass and a sense of space that makes films and shows far more immersive. Importantly, voices remain clear, even during heavy-duty scenes.

For the money, this is simply the most complete surround sound setup you’ll find.

Setup is refreshingly simple: HDMI eARC gets you going in minutes, no fuss. The hardware feels solid, and though the design is no flashy showpiece, it’s compact enough to sit naturally below most TVs (including the TCL C6KS) and doesn’t look toy-ish.

Sure, there are some limitations. The sub can get a little over-enthusiastic now and then, which in the busiest action scenes can make bass slightly boomy and even muddy dialogue a little. And while the package is excellent for movies, for stereo music or nuanced sound-mixes, it doesn’t quite reach high-end levels.

Again, though, those were minor issues at the original price of £249, so they really pale into insignificance with this £60 discount.

This five-star soundbar system was already a bargain at its launch price, but this saving of £60 makes it even more tempting. It boasts impressive weight, scale and a convincing Dolby Atmos effect, all in a compact, affordable package.View Deal

Good to know: what's in the box, important measurements and more

It's not the most glamorous part of buying a new OLED TV, but we're here to share some crucial information regarding what's included with your new TV; manuals and all.

In the box you'll find the TV (no surprises there), a tabletop stand with screws (unlike the G-series OLEDs, which have previously included wall-mount stands), the Magic Remote with batteries, an attached power cable, optional cable tidy clips, and the user manuals and warranty guides.

The stand is mostly the same across the core 48- to 65-inch screen sizes, with each featuring a centrally mounted stand that's 47cm in width.

The 77-inch model uses a very similar-looking stand; however, it's slightly wider at 52cm, whereas the 83-inch model interestingly features the narrowest stand at 46cm.

The position and fairly narrow width of the stand make it easy to position on a wide range of media units; however, it's best to measure up just in case.

The 42-inch size features a slightly different tabletop stand with dual blade-style feet at either end of the TV, which are 71.8cm apart. Ironically, the smallest model technically features the widest stand. If you're hoping to wall mount this TV, then you should know that all sizes are compatible with the universal VESA standard.

Every model comes with LG's Magic Remote, which includes a unique motion-style pointer interface; if you've ever used a Nintendo Wii, then you'll find yourself right at home with this remote.

If you'd prefer to use a more traditional interface, then you can simply turn off the motion feature in the settings menu, under the "pointer options" heading, which can be found in the system category.

Finally, if this is your first OLED TV, then you've likely heard about burn-in before. While this used to be a major issue with OLED TVs, we've found that this issue has become much less prevalent in recent years.

If you hammer this TV for years on end with static content on the screen for long periods of time, then you may well encounter it, but LG includes various systems to help negate this issue, including a pixel cleaning process that happens automatically and frequently.

The LG C5 is a feature rich TV for movie fans and gamers like. It features an OLED panel which, if you haven't come across this panel technology before, features individual light control for each of the pixels, allowing them to completely turn off with no influence on the adjacent pixels.

This means that when the TV shows blacks, they're real blacks, and there's no halo effect when bright objects are shown on dark backgrounds.

Furthermore, this is a 4K HDR TV, with support for the Dolby Vision HDR format with relevant content from Blu-ray discs, streaming services, and even video games.

Speaking of gaming, the panel can reach speeds of up to 144Hz, with variable refresh rate and auto low latency mode both included, meaning gaming is responsive and buttery smooth on this TV; hence why we awarded it the title of "best gaming TV" this year.

There are four HDMI 2.1 sockets on the C5, all of which are capable of accepting high-speed signals up to 4K/144Hz (console gamers are limited to 120Hz), with one of these sockets doubling as the eARC port to interface with external audio equipment.

Streaming and smart functionality are included via the webOS platform, which features every imaginable streaming service and entertainment app. LG has also included compatibility with other smart home appliances and gadgets via its ThinQ initiative, meaning you can interact with your smart home via the TV.

AI takes a step forward this year, with a voice-interactive help troubleshooting function that allows you to change the settings on the C5 by simply explaining your issue to the TV's remote.

How can you get the best out of this TV?

We've raved about the 42-, 48- and 55-inch versions of this TV's picture performance. It provides a crisp, three-dimensional and vibrant image that's balanced and engaging in equal measures, but you need to adjust a few settings to truly get the best out of this TV.

We find Filmmaker Mode to be the best setting, as it provides the most authentic image for those looking to achieve a picture closest to the director's original intention.

It turns off most of the settings we'd hope for; however, we recommend checking the sharpness value in the picture settings and turning it down to zero if it's not already set there.

Furthermore, the TruMotion setting is worth looking into, as it adds just a touch of smoothness to motion, which is needed with this TV. It doesn't introduce the so-called soap opera effect, but those sensitive to motion processing may wish to steer clear.

Finally, we'd recommend switching on Dynamic Tone Mapping in the picture settings, as it adds some necessary pop and brightness to HDR10 content.

What should I pair with the LG C5?

If there's one area where we found the C5 to be underwhelming, it's the built-in speakers. To be fair to LG, most TVs that we test don't tend to impress with their included speakers, hence why we recommend pairing the C5 with a Dolby Atmos soundbar.

If you're thinking of buying the 42- or 48-inch C5, then you should look at the Sonos Beam Gen 2, as its compact chassis pairs well with these smaller screen sizes. It delivers five-star immersive sound, and it can be found for just £335 at Amazon in the Black Friday sales.

If you've chosen any of the larger sizes, then the Sonos Arc Ultra will best suit your TV. It's larger in width, meaning it'll fit more naturally underneath, and the bigger, bolder and more room-filling sound will match with the bigger picture. It too can be found at a discount right now, with a Black Friday price of £799 at Richer Sounds.

Elsewhere, we'd recommend the Panasonic DP-UB820 4K Blu-ray player (currently down to £289 at Richer Sounds) as a 4K Blu-ray will deliver the sharpest image to enjoy on your new OLED TV.

And as this is a supreme gaming TV, you can't go wrong with a Sony PlayStation 5 (now just £289 for the Digital Edition), which supports all of the excellent gaming features that this TV includes.

There are, of course, alternatives to the LG C5. The Sony Bravia 8 is a prime example, as it offers a stunning picture with Sony's excellent picture processing, a slick design and better sound, though the 65-inch model is considerably more expensive at £1799 at Richer Sounds.

Samsung offers the S90F, which features a brighter QD-OLED panel at 65 inches, though the other sizes seem to feature standard OLED displays. We can vouch for the 48-inch model as a great alternative to the smaller LG C5, but we haven't tested any of the other sizes.

Panasonic's Z90B is another excellent 48-inch OLED option, as this Award-winning TV sports a more balanced and authentic picture, as well as better sound.

The closest separates system we’d recommend right now would pair the Kupids with the Cambridge Audio AXA35 stereo amplifier and WiiM Pro Plus streamer, but this would raise the combined price for your new system to £817.

The best price for the Cambridge Audio AXA35 we’ve spotted is £299 at Richer Sounds. The price-appropriate WiiM Pro Plus, meanwhile, continues to sell for its standard £219 at most retailers.

If you weren’t 100 per cent wed to the Dalis, you could save a few extra pounds and bring the price down a bit by swapping them for the Wharfedale Diamond 12.1, which cost £179 right now.

Having run the two head-to-head, we found that while the bigger Diamond 12.1 have their charms and a more refined, there’s a reason they were dethroned during this year's What Hi-Fi? Awards in favour of the more detailed, clearer-sounding Kupid speakers.

If you can afford the extra cost, then the dinky Dali Kupids added liveliness and greater dynamic ability make them a more enjoyable listen in most instances.

I've been testing projectors ever since I joined What Hi-Fi? way back in 2007, and I firmly believe 2025 is one of the best we've ever had for home cinema projector quality.

The Hisense M2 Pro is a seriously impressive little projector. For something this compact and portable, the image quality is way better than you’d expect.

It uses a triple-laser light source, which gives it punchy colours and a really clean, vibrant look without things feeling overcooked. Skin tones stay natural, reds don’t go nuclear, and there’s a nice bit of depth to the image.

As you would expect at this level, the Hisense isn't native 4K, but uses pixel shifting to deliver a perceptual 4K image. It works really well – from a normal seating distance, it looks plenty sharp and crisp enough.

Brightness is another strong point. With up to 1300 lumens, the M2 Pro holds up surprisingly well in rooms that aren’t pitch black. You obviously get the best contrast in low lighting, but it doesn’t completely collapse if there’s some ambient light around.

HDR performance is good too, and the projector supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+ on top of the usual HDR10 and HLG.

Black levels aren’t OLED-deep, but for a projector this size, they’re respectable. Contrast is good enough to give movies a nice cinematic feel, especially on a proper screen.

Basically, if your priority is getting a sharp, colourful, cinematic image without needing a full home cinema setup, the M2 Pro absolutely delivers, and it's amazing value with this Black Friday deal.

Hisense PL2

If it's an ultra-short-throw projector you're after, the Hisense PL2 is the model to get.

Because this is a UST projector, it sits just inches from your wall, yet it can produce a massive, 150-inch image.

Visually, the PL2 impresses big time. With 2700 ANSI lumens of brightness, it’s bold and punchy – even when there's ambient light in the room.

Colours feel natural, not overcooked, and the dark-detail handling is really good: shadows in moody scenes still reveal texture, making it feel quite cinematic. There’s excellent HDR support too — Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ are all in there.

Contrast is quoted at 3,000:1, so blacks don’t disappear completely, but for a UST projector, they’re pretty respectable. You do need to tweak the picture a little – the out-of-the-box settings aren’t perfect – but once you dial it in, the image looks consistently balanced and cinematic.

All in all, if you want a high-quality, big-screen feel without the hassle of mounting a projector far away, the PL2 nails it – especially for movie fans.

BenQ W2720i

The BenQ W2720i puts picture quality front and centre. Using a 4-LED light source and pixel-shifted 4K DLP tech, it produces a sharp, detailed image with a level of control that’s hugely impressive for the money.

Black levels are particularly strong for a DLP projector, helped along by BenQ’s dynamic dimming system.

Dark scenes keep their depth without losing fine detail, so you don’t get that flat or washed-out look that cheaper projectors often suffer from. There’s a real sense of contrast and punch, especially in a dark room.

Colour performance is another highlight. With excellent coverage of Rec.709 and very good DCI-P3 support, colours look natural and balanced – skin tones are spot-on, and bright scenes never feel overcooked.

At 2500 ANSI lumens, it’s bright enough for a bit of ambient light, but like most projectors, it really shines when the lights are down. HDR (in the HDR10 and HLG formats) adds extra depth and highlight detail, without tipping into harshness.

If you want a clean, cinematic image with accuracy and polish, rather than loads of gimmicks, the W2720i is a very easy projector to recommend.

The BenQ W2720i does an outstanding job of straddling the usually incompatible worlds of serious and casual home cinema projection. It delivers phenomenal sharpness, excellent contrast with deep, neutral blacks, and impressive detail levels throughout.View Deal

Epson EH-LS9000

The Epson EH-LS9000 is one of those projectors that immediately feels like a step up into proper home-cinema territory. Using a 3LCD laser engine with pixel-shifted 4K, it delivers a big, bold image that looks clean, detailed and effortlessly cinematic on large screens.

Sharpness is excellent, and there’s a real sense of depth and dimensionality to the picture that makes films feel more immersive.

Colours are a particular strong point: they’re rich and vibrant without tipping into artificial territory, and skin tones look natural and consistent. Motion is handled smoothly, too, with fast action staying clear and controlled rather than smeared.

In darker scenes, the LS9000 shows plenty of subtle shadow detail, which helps give films a layered, three-dimensional look. Black levels aren’t OLED-deep, of course – they can look more dark grey than truly black – but contrast is still strong overall, and the image retains plenty of punch and dynamic range.

It’s also impressively bright, so highlights have real impact, and it holds its own even on larger screens or in rooms that aren’t completely pitch black.

All in all, this is a really polished, confident performer that prioritises cinematic picture quality over gimmicks, and it does so with style.

Sony VPL-XW5000ES

The Sony VPL‑XW5000ES is a real milestone projector – it’s Sony’s most affordable native 4K laser projector, yet it punches way above its weight. And even after several years on sale, it's still the absolute best performance-per-pound projector you can buy.

The 0.61-inch SXRD chip delivers full 3840×2160 resolution without relying on pixel-shifting tricks, producing an image that’s sharp, layered, and effortlessly cinematic.

Sony’s X1 Ultimate processing adds refinement: the Dynamic HDR Enhancer boosts brightness in highlights without flattening the rest of the scene, while Reality Creation sharpens detail naturally.

Colour performance is excellent too – the Triluminos Pro engine gives rich, controlled tones and renders skin tones beautifully.

Contrast is strong, with deep, rich blacks that give films plenty of punch, and while the 2000-lumen laser source might not sound super-bright on paper, it delivers HDR highlights that really pop, making the picture feel dynamic and immersive.

Setup requires a bit of patience since zoom, focus, and lens shift are fully manual, and it doesn’t support Dolby Vision or HDR10+. Even so, the VPL‑XW5000ES is an absolute stunner at its full price of £5999, let alone this discounted price of £3999.

Sony Bravia Projector 8

The Sony Bravia Projector 8 takes everything that impressed about the XW5000ES and pushes it further.

It’s still a native 4K model with SXRD panels, but it’s brighter, with deeper contrast and even more punchy HDR highlights. Colours are rich and accurate, and skin tones remain natural even in vivid scenes.

Blacks feel weightier, too, while shadow detail is more visible, and the picture overall has a bit more “wow” factor – films look cinematic in a way that really makes the extra spend feel justified.

The lens keeps the edges sharp on huge images, so you don’t lose detail even across a 150-inch or larger screen.

Motion handling is excellent, and for gamers, it’s a big step up thanks to HDMI 2.1 ports supporting 4K/120Hz and ALLM.

Put simply, while the XW5000ES nails native 4K on a standard setup, the Bravia Projector 8 is a worthy step up for those with even more premium systems – brighter, more cinematic, and ready to dominate a dedicated home cinema room.

The Sony Bravia Projector 8 is the best projector over available that costs over £10,000. Fortunately, it's as brilliant as it is pricey, boasting excellent contrast and detail resolution, stunning black depth and an improved HDMI specification. And this saving is massive.View Deal

The wildcard choice: TCL 98C7K

And the wildcard? That would be the 98-inch TCL C7K. Yes, it's a TV rather than a projector – that's what makes it a wildcard.

If you're looking at a projector because you want a roughly 100-inch display at home, I really think that it's also worth considering this TV.

For less than £2000, this TCL offers a 98-inch screen with higher brightness, deeper blacks and better contrast than any of the projectors above. It's got better gaming specs, too, and a better smart platform.

Sure, it lacks that almost indefinable charm that you get with a projector, but it makes up for that in so many ways.

I'm not saying you definitely should buy this 98-inch TCL TV instead of a projector – I'm just saying it's worthy of some thought.

If you're looking for an absolutely huge TV (perhaps instead of a projector and screen), you have to check out the 98-inch TCL C7K. This is a Mini LED TV with 2000 independent dimming zones and a peak brightness of 3000 nits. Anyone looking to build a budget hi-fi system this Black Friday needs a pair of standmount speakers. Well, they could opt for floorstanders if they have more space and a little more cash, but that's another story.

The Q Acoustics 3020c would slot nicely into a fledgling system, provided you partner them with an appropriately forgiving amp (the Arcam A5 springs to mind). They're clear, detailed speakers made to an impressive standard, and now that they've sunk from £399 to just £299 at Sevenoaks, Richer Sounds and Peter Tyson, they're an enticing budget prospect.

Best Q Acoustics 3020c standmount speaker deal

£100 off a pair of clear, detailed Q Acoustics 3020c is a deal that needs serious consideration this Black Friday. Dropping from around £400 to just under £300 is a major saving, and it makes the 3020c a different proposition entirely if you're seeking excellent value in the November sales.

Q Acoustics' 3000 speaker range ended up becoming one of the brand’s most popular. With a focus on as much sound-per-pound performance as possible, it did the job for rafts of listeners seeking speakers that would provide hours of audio pleasure without having to fork out vast sums in the process.

Q Acoustics' newer 3000c series was first revealed at last year’s High End Munich showcase, with the 3020c representing the brand's continuing aim to make affordable standmounts that would deliver the sonic goods for a modest outlay.

To look at, the 3020c disguise their modest outlay well. That handsome one-piece metallic bezel around the dual drive units and the smooth, polished feel of the cabinets. The rear-ported standmounters aren’t bi-wirable, but their sensitivity of 87dB/W/m and nominal impedance of 6 ohms does make them fairly typical for speakers at this price and size.

At the heart of the standmounts is Q Acoustics’ 'Continuous Curved Cone', the driver tech the company first introduced in its more premium 5000 series, deployed here for the 3020c's 12cm impregnated paper mid/bass driver. The design aims to “elevate the 3000c range above its peers” by offering an “articulate and fast mid-range, controlled bass dynamics and detailed high frequencies”.

That, in many ways, is exactly what you get. The 3020c are undeniably clear, articulate and agile speakers, with a clear yet zippy deliver that's packed with textural detail.

As we stated in our review, the speakers' bass reproduction is a particular highlight: "That feeling of enthusiasm is aided by the speakers’ impressively taut bass which, while not earth-shakingly powerful, lends tracks a crisp, efficient nature at the lower end".

7 things I wish I knew during my first hunt for a Black Friday TV deal

Have no fear, readers – as What Hi-Fi?’s resident deals staff writer, I am now more than versed in what makes a good Black Friday deal.

This wasn’t always the case, however, as illustrated during my very first attempt to brave the Black Friday rush for a TV deal, many moons ago.

I’m ashamed to admit I went in almost blind, with no game plan other than finding a cheap TV. Back then, I assumed a budget TV meant a tiny 22-inch HD screen – imagine my surprise when I found out a few hundred pounds could easily stretch to a 4K TV more than 10 inches bigger than that with an app-packed OS, solid HDR support and gaming features such as ALLM.

I was lucky, though. I managed to stumble onto the Award-winning Samsung TU7100 at a reasonable price. And, over the years, I have refined my TV buying expertise through several years of covering Black Friday sales.

While I’m sure many of you are Black Friday veterans with years of service, here are a few tips for those dipping their toes back into the TV market for the first time this Black Friday. So you can avoid making the same mistakes I did!

Set A Budget

It’s very easy to get swept along with the hype when you spot a good deal on a more premium TV, only for you to scramble afterwards to find ways you can actually afford it. My advice? Set a clear budget in advance. Then, if you spot a surprise deal on the big day, you know for sure whether you can realistically purchase it. We’re all for snapping up a good deal while it’s hot, but panic buying is a dangerous game.

Here at What Hi-Fi?, we have clear buying guides for all budgets to help you make the right choice, whatever price range you’re working with. A cheap TV doesn’t have to mean poor quality – we’ve found several performance-per-pound champs that we can recommend over some more premium siblings.

Choose a few models in advance and learn the prices

Despite all the slogans and bright graphics, you will only truly know if you’ve found a good Black Friday deal if you know the price it was selling for previously. So it’s worth choosing a few models in advance and noting down their current prices. Not only will this allow you to compare your options without the time pressure, but you’ll also know whether you’re actually getting a deal come Black Friday and not just falling for the marketing.

Our reviews also include the launch prices of all the models we have tested, which can help you get a ballpark figure to kick things off.

Websites such CamelCamelCamel and Price Spy could also come in handy. CamelCamelCamel is a price-tracking tool that lets you view the price history of Amazon products, so you can easily see if they were cheaper in the past. It’s also available as a Google Chrome extension, allowing you to quickly check prices with a single click.

While CamelCamelCamel is limited only to Amazon, PriceSpy is a price comparison website that covers a wider range of retailers. Type in the product you’re shopping for, and you’ll be presented with the best price offers from across the internet. There’s a reviews and price history section as well. While we recommend double-checking that the price and product are correct, PriceSpy can be an efficient way to find a deal.

Of course, this means the unenviable task of choosing a TV model – which brings us to...

Learn the lingo

Do you know your OLED from your QD-OLED? Your VRR from your ALLM? Luckily for us home theatre fans, screen technology is constantly changing and evolving, so there’s always something to keep us excited in our testing room.

But it can all be rather overwhelming when you’re barraged with acronyms while assessing a limited-time lightning deal. If you’re at least a little bit interested in your TV specifications (and we hope you are if you’re on the What Hi-Fi? site!), it’s worth learning some of the key terms and phrases so that exciting features don’t read like gibberish on a product page.

One of the key features to learn, and arguably one of the most confusing, is panel technology. OLED is currently the screen technology to beat thanks to its perfect blacks and pixel-level contrast control. But it comes with a premium price to match. On the other side of the spectrum, LCD is still a popular pick for budget TVs.

There are premium LCD formats available now to take on OLED: Mini LED panels use, you guessed it, tiny LEDs to achieve better contrast control and deeper blacks.

Quantum Dot technology is also now available in concert with both LCD and OLED panels. Adding a quantum dot layer to LCDs produces a panel technology known as QLED; quantum dots added to OLED result in what we call QD-OLED. In both cases, the result is generally better, more consistent colours.

Once you have decided what type of TV is right for you, you can drill down into other features you might like. Gamers will want to look out for HDMI 2.1 sockets for 4K/120Hz gaming, as well as VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode).

Decide which features you want – and which you don’t

When it comes to TV features, it can be very tempting to try to collect them all. And while some premium TVs might come close to letting you do that, it’s far better to prioritise the features you will actually use.

Desperate to try out the new OLED screens everyone’s going on about? Want a big 65-inches-plus TV that is all the rage now? If any features are absolute must-haves, knowing this in advance will make it much easier to narrow down your model choices. For example, if you don’t have an external streaming device, you’ll want to make sure your TV has smart features and all your favourite apps included.

Conversely, it's quite likely that some features might not apply to your TV use. Not a gamer? Multiple HDMI 2.1 ports and other gaming features are not necessary. Already got a capable sound system? The TV audio specification will be largely irrelevant to you.

Black Friday will be awash with great deals and low prices – but ultimately the best deal will be the lowest price on the TV that’s right for you.

Look out for voucher codes and membership prices

I have learned, during my time as a deals staff writer, that many specialist AV sites will feature codes on product pages that can provide a significant discount on the listed price. These aren’t always immediately obvious, however, and can be easily missed in the Black Friday rush.

The same goes for member-exclusive prices. Some membership schemes, such as those for Richer Sounds VIP, Sevenoaks and Peter Tyson, are completely free to join and simply require you to sign up with your email.

Other outlets, such as Marks Electrical in the UK and Best Buy in the US, charge a small membership fee. Even with a fee, of course, there are savings to be had. These schemes also often come with a variety of other benefits, making them well worth considering.

Some retailers, such as Walmart and Target in the US or Amazon worldwide, offer early access to deals through their paid membership – which could be a game-changer if you're after a product that is likely to sell out.

So just make sure to check pages carefully during your Black Friday search – there are extra savings to be had if you know where to look. Here at What Hi-Fi? we’ll always make it clear if a code or membership is needed in our deals coverage.

Consider – and beware – the TV and sound system package

Often when you buy a TV now, there will be an option to add a soundbar or soundbar system. This can be a great way to get a home theatre bundle in one affordable package – and there are genuine savings to be had.

Usually, it will be a sound system from the same manufacturer as the TV, which can offer some extra compatibility features as well as aesthetic alignment. If you’re serious about your sound, though, this might not be the best deal for you – it’s worth doing your research into which audio equipment you’ll like too.

Even with the discount, there might be better sound systems out there for that price, or you might prefer to pay a little more for a more premium option.

Then again, you can also sell this discounted sound system on eBay for a tidy profit. Check selling prices first, of course!

Don’t forget about the freebies!

Many manufacturers will now offer you several free trials of subscription services with your brand new TV. While we don’t recommend you make your decision based on that alone, they’re worth taking a look at as they can easily be forgotten about. Black Friday week is upon us. As a consequence, as is the case every year, my inbox has been flooded with questions, many of which share a common theme: is it worth updating your TV during the event?

And I get why. TVs have always been a big ticket item during Black Friday. I still remember watching two men wrestle to get one of a select few flat screen TVs during one of the first Black Fridays I covered, when it was still a physical, in-store event many moons ago…

But this year, the question is a tricky one as the answer is entirely dependent on your personal circumstances and current set-up. Which is why I’ve taken the time to pen this guide offering my personal advice to shoppers this deals season.

It may be worth upgrading your TV if…

If you're still on an entry-level LCD and yet to make the jump to an OLED, or even Mini LED, then 2025’s Black Friday event is a good time to upgrade your set-up, even if you’re on a strict budget.

This is because, while OLED sets justifiably get most of the attention, 2025 has been a great year for mid-range and even entry-level sets – to the point, for the first time in years, we’ve managed to find a five-star, cheap TV worth recommending.

Specifically, the TCL C6KS. Regular readers will know that we’ve struggled to find a sub-£500 / $500 TV to recommend for many years. That’s why last year our best cheap TV guide was nearly entirely populated with four-star sets.

The TCL C6KS changed this when we got it into our viewing rooms earlier this year, with our reviewers uniformly agreeing it’s not only a five-star set, it’s also the best cheap TV we’ve reviewed, period.

The main highlight is its use of a Mini LED panel, which gives it significantly better contrast and HDR performance than the Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED – its main rival and our former cheap recommendation.

Trust me, if you’re coming off a basic LCD set from even a few years ago, the C6KS will almost certainly offer a more immersive viewing experience. And with it currently enjoying a Black Friday price cut, letting you grab it for £349 at most retailers (save £71), it’s hard not to recommend it to any buyer on a budget.

My only words of warning are to budget for a soundbar. Even an entry-level option, such as the Sony HT-SF150, will offer better audio quality than its in-built speakers.

Gamers should also be aware it can only run at 4K/60Hz – so current generation consoles won’t feel as smooth or responsive as they do on more expensive sets capable of 120Hz refresh rates.

If you have a little more cash to spare, you should also consider the step-up TCL C7K. This is the middle child in TCL’s line and the Mini LED we recommend to most people, with its panel having more dimming zones, better peak brightness, more accurate colours and a higher refresh rate than the C6KS.

It’s also one of the best Mini LEDs we’ve tested, offering a perfect rung up the ladder for buyers who care about picture quality, but can’t quite justify splurging for an OLED – as evidenced by its What Hi-Fi Awards 2025 win and prime position in our best Mini LED TV guide.

The only downside here is that we haven’t seen a knockout deal on the unit yet. The best we’ve seen is a £50 saving at Currys, that lets you get it for £749. I’d expect it to drop at least another £100 during Black Friday, so it’s one to watch – but not pull the trigger on yet, in my mind.

If you’re currently looking at getting a new OLED model, then my advice is a little more heavily caveated.

If you’ve got a lot of cash to spare and are looking to get a top-end home cinema experience, OLED sets offer the best performance. Even the best Mini LED TVs we’ve reviewed can’t match OLED's pixel level light control, which lets those panels offer perfect blacks.

And if you’re on an old LCD then even step-down OLEDs are worth considering. At the moment the big deals I’ve spotted are on the 55- and 65-inch LG C5. Specifically, you can buy the five-star 65-inch set for £1299 at Richer Sounds. That’s a £1400 saving and the best price I’ve seen on the C5 this year.

If you want something smaller, the five-star 48-inch Samsung S90F has also had a decent discount already, retailing for £828 on Amazon. Though it’s not the best small OLED I’ve tested this year, at this price it’s a very compelling option.

Both sets will offer palpable improvements on any LCD and are well worth considering if you’re keen to get your first OLED this year. But, if you already own an OLED released within the past few years, I have a word of warning.

If you own a recent OLED, hold fire unless you are willing to go flagship

Having helped review some of this year’s top TVs, I’d strongly urge any buyer with an OLED released in the past few years to avoid upgrading to anything other than a flagship.

This isn’t because this year’s step-down models are bad, it’s just that the performance bump you’ll get won’t justify the added expense – I said as much during Prime Day, where I detailed why I still don’t feel the need to upgrade from my LG C2.

Step-down models are getting better, but the improvements are incremental compared to what we're seeing on flagships – a smidgeon more brightness here, slightly better colour volume there etc. None of them have been upgraded to feature next-generation QD-OLED or Primary RGB Tandem OLED TV panels.

These technologies remain limited to flagship level sets. This means that if you want a true, blow-your-socks-off upgrade that you’ll notice straight away, even coming from an OLED, you’ll need to be willing to spend flagship-level money this Black Friday.

If you are, I’d personally recommend the Sony Bravia 8 II. Our TV and AV editor, Tom Parsons, describes the next generation QD-OLED TV as the best OLED he’s ever reviewed. And having sat in our viewing rooms comparing it to rival flagships, I agree with that sentiment, with it offering the best holistic performance available right now.

And as luck would have it, the Sony Bravia 8 II has already had its price slashed this Black Friday. You can buy the 65-inch Sony Bravia 8 II for £1999 at Richer Sounds (save £200). My only word of caution here is that I am expecting it to go down a little more during Black Friday and that my recommendation is only for people on older step-down OLED models.

If you have a flagship released within the past couple of years, I’d recommend holding fire for at least another year – especially with the new RGB Mini LED tech set to launch in 2026 and promising to challenge OLED in the upper echelons of the market.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a story about the LG C5 deals that were around at the time and had a go at predicting whether they would be beaten on Black Friday.

I used the Black Friday pricing of previous C-series OLEDs, as well as my general experience monitoring TV prices, so I figured I'd be in the right ballpark at least.

Well, I was wrong, particularly on the 42-inch LG C5.

I predicted that the smallest LG C5, which was £949 at the time, would drop to £899. But you can actually buy it right now for just £799 at Richer Sounds (and others).

This is so much cheaper than I expected at this stage of the C5's life.

I expect the price will head back up a bit after Black Friday, and I don't imagine it will get back down below £800 until at least Christmas, so this seems like a great time to buy.

Lowest-ever price: £799
The smallest version of the C5 is now the very best 42-inch TV you can buy – and it has the What Hi-Fi? Award to prove it. It's admittedly not a big improvement on the C4, but seeing as it currently costs barely any more, you may as well get the new model. Expect balanced picture quality, excellent smart and flawless gaming specs.View Deal

The 42-inch LG C5 OLED is a smart bet for anyone wanting top-tier picture in a compact package. It’s not a dramatic leap over the previous C4, but it refines what was already excellent.

The design is sleek and understated – slim, light and easy to set up – though its low-set feet mean a soundbar might obscure part of the screen. The remote is still the same Magic Remote: a little plasticky, no backlight, and clunky by modern standards, but functional if not flashy.

What really stands out is its feature set: all four of the HDMI 2.1 ports support 4K/144Hz (and the more console-friendly 4K/120Hz) gaming, VRR and ALLM – everything a serious gamer could want in a small TV.

Throw in HDR support for Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG, plus a powerful Alpha 9 Gen 8 chip with LG’s Brightness Booster Engine, and you’ve got a sub-55-inch TV that punches way above its weight.

Streaming apps feel snappy, thanks to webOS 25, and services such as Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, BBC iPlayer and even GeForce Now are all at your fingertips.

As for the picture, it’s a treat. In default settings, things can look a little artificial, but switch to Filmmaker Mode with judder reduction off and dynamic tone mapping on, and the magic happens.

The desert landscapes in Dune shimmer with detail, the Fremen fighters feel three-dimensional, and motion remains smooth even in chaotic scenes. Skin tones are warm and natural in daylight, though in darker scenes some colour volume is lost – faces can take on a slightly pale, greenish hue, which is more noticeable than on some competing sets.

When it comes to upscaling, the C5 handles lower-res content really well: dim lantern-lit scenes retain a soft, organic glow and details don’t look overly sharpened or artificial.

That said, the speakers don’t match the brilliance of the screen. The built-in sound is serviceable for casual viewing, but it lacks bass and directionality – you’ll almost certainly want to pair this TV with a good soundbar for a proper cinematic experience.

In short, the 42-inch LG C5 is the best small OLED around right now: rich, immersive visuals, flawless gaming chops, and a solid smart platform. Add a soundbar and you're set.
