Do not buy this amp if you are under 80 yrs old or if you want to control it from your Android tablet/phone or iPad/iPhone. As always with Sony the user interface is very slow (and I mean very, very slow) and very user UNfriendly. The streaming capabilities from DN1040 is a joke, sometimes it can connect to your computer and NAS-drive, but often it can not. It ususally takes 30 minutes to get some sound out from your network, and often it fails completely. Not even the built in services like V-Tuner works properly.
It´s very clear that Sony put this product in the market in a hurry. The control apps for IOS and Andriod are among the whorst I´ve ever seen. It´s like the apps are made by a couple trainees as their first work after school whitout any inspection or testing before putting it on the market. Compared to Yamaha and Pioneer apps the STR DN1040 is really embarrassing.
The STR DN 1040 has even problems with integration with other SONY products like the PS3 and this is really, really embarrassing for SONY.
I´m so dissapointed with the STR DN1040 that I will never again buy anything that is branded SONY. There are far more modern competitors out there. I´ll go for them instead.
Even if the sound is quite OK it´s impossible to use the STR DN1040 in any modern application at home and even the remote control that are delivered with the amp is quite nasty and dodgy.
You are exactly right. The streaming is terrible, the interface is a joke. I have decided to connect my Logitech Squeezebox to the amp rather than mess around with the Sony network interface. Evwen though it finds my Logitech server and I can stream music from the computer, I still have to play the songs album by album, I cannot shuffle my music and have continuous streaming which is really annoying. The iPhone app sucks ass as well, it looks as if it was made by a student developer on their first project and they had 24hours to complete it in. The volume control is so poor that it is difficult to fine tune the volume by a couple of points, the resolution is more like 5 points at best. Even when you have found stations on their horrible to navigate interface and entered them as favourites it still takes forever to connect. I am extremely disappointed Sony.
But having said that, the sound quality is top notch. I have mine paired with Canton Movie 130 speakers in a 5.1 configuration and with CDs and Blu Ray discs I am very impressed with the depth and clarity of the sound. And using the Sony remote in conjunction with the TV works very well for selecting input device etc. So thats all good. The kids (9 and 11) also picked it up quickly so it did not take long for them to figure out how to turn on the system and choose a device. So all in all I am happy with that part.
But I am waiting for the firmware upgrade and iPhone app upgrades to make this a usable network streaming system, in the meantime Squeezebox will be connected.
How does this compare with last year's winner; the Yamaha RX-V673?
The Sony's sound is much clearer and precise than the Yamaha, and it's better with music.
No 4k Upscaling! and the dennon and yammaha sound so much more dynamic. Sony are getting there but still not quiet up to speed with the big sound boys just yet!
Sony are dropping the ball here in regards to rivals having 4k upscaling. Thats surprising on a £500.00 AV Receiver.
Do you think if i asked nicely sony would put this amp in an ES case for me. I love the look, and sound of my 1200es it just lacks HD sound decoding. It accepts pcm through one hdmi but i have been told in stereo only. I can't get over the fact Sony never made a 1300, 1400, 1500es. I would definately own one of them now.
They did they made a 2400es. It was basically an upgraded 1200es with HD audio decoding. They were both a similar price at release.
Is this special tuned for UK?
Or the international version will have the same sound quality?

The large screen and punchy picture are highly attractive for this price, but you’ll have to forego the smart features and Full HD resolution
A decent effort from Boston Acoustics, but it’s nothing remarkable
This stunning and feature-laden Samsung is one of the best TV bargains we’ve seen
