It would have been useful for the review to mention that this model doesn't have 2-ch analogue output, which I figured would be pretty much standard-fare, especially when talking about sound quality (how were you assessing this anyway, since an external DAC of some kind would be required - don't you mean the DAC sounded good?). Anyway, since it's omitted, you can't connect it to your hi-fi without a DAC or Home Theatre amp/decoder of some kind, which severely limits it's usefulness as a player in a 2-ch system and for playing CDs, etc. Bought one for my Dad for his birthday and am quite shocked it doesn't have this facility. Hope this gives a heads-up to other potential buyers, I have to try and return it for an S790 now, wish me luck...
In fact, according to Sony, it plays SACD...
The technical info is wrong.
Hi Andy, thanks ill look forward to that in future. It's precisely because there's not much budget choice that I'd like to know how the Sony decks compare against other models in terms of SACD quality. Who knows, a few more in depth reviews may generate more interest in the format.
Considering you still tout yourself as a HiFi magazine, I find it incredibly frustrating you never detail the SACD performance of ANY of the capable players. Do you even test this feature?
I can assure you we do test SACD playback - it's simply a case that for the purposes of a shortened review in the magazine, where space is at a slight premium, sometimes a few lines of copy have to be cut. We will endeavour to be publish the specifics in the future. Are you looking for a budget SACD player - you're slighty limited for choice at this end of the market... Thanks
