Onkyo TX-SR608

I have had this av for along time now and think it is fantastic sound and picture is excellent, and i do still have my old yamaha which i have hooked up in the bedroom with the games console sweet.

This glowing review by WHATHIFI does not address what is a glaring problem with this model that is documented all over the web by many disenchanted owners. 1080p 24 FPS sources stutter intermittently as if a frame is dropped. The way around this issue it that the 608 allows you to completely disable the video processor and send an unmolested signal by pressing VCR and return simultaneously till the video processing mode lands on SKIP. But doing this deactivates the OSD, so you have to live without the OSD GUI. Thus far, it seeems that Onkyo has not addressed this in any way, though the problem has existed for quite some time. Until they do, I'd spend my money elsewhere. What's up with WHATHIFI? - You are highly recommending a defective product!

canada16 - unless you want to buy right now (in which case the Onkyo's a superb choice), i'd wait until all this season's new AV amps/receivers are out before making an upgrade.

The Onkyo is indeed excellent, but with new models also due from Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer and Sony, we've got some serious Group Testing to do!

I upgraded to this model from a Yamaha DSP-AX763.I must say right from the off that in terms of sound, this receiver is superb!,No matter what medium you present to it. Hi Definition Audio via Blu Ray for both Movies and music is Superb. Stereo Via a Cambridge Audio Magic Dac is Very very good (I'm using a Pioneer DV-LX50 as a Transport).DVD Audio and SACD sound excellent,Although not as good as my old Marantz 7200 which a mate is using now.

The main observation I would make is that this receiver is Clearly built around its 6 HDMI inputs, and focused on the digital age.As such its not so friendly to analogue sources,therefore no Multi channel in's or pre-outs.At present I am bi-amping my Main left and right speakers. With no pre-outs,should I ever wish to go to a 7.1 configuration I would not be able to add a stereo amp for the surround back speakers ( I would have to lose the Bi-amped front stereo pair,which I do not want to do)

No Phono stage,and No analogue in's and outs to support a CDR or Mini Disc recorder ( I could use the VCR/DVR analogue in's an out's but I'm looking to add a DVD recorder). As circumstance would have it I Have been using a DVDO Edge as my Audio Video Hub and for some reason I cannot route the set up display or the OSD of the Onkyo through it.Happily this is not a deal breaker as I ran the Onkyo directly To My TV once to set it up and do not really need it after that.If ever I wanted to have a 7.1 set up and preserve my Bi-amped fronts I'll need an upgrade to a different amp.  

That's my nit pick over! LOL. I only paid 349.00 for this brand new ! ) (biggest bargain in Home cinema right now). If you can get one of these beauties at a discount price,do it !.

Beware it's replacement the model the TX-SR-609. From what I have seen of the spec's there is no significant upgrade in features apart from the addition of an Ethernet port,but they have downgraded the Zone 2 speaker terminals to spring Clips ! ( .

Actually if your looking to upgrade from & like pioneer the vsx-8/920 look nice similarities,Or if you go up the ladder you can look at the 1020/1120!

Well the iminent vsx-lx 53 @ 1299 is just here so its not really a fair comparison even towards the lx-52.I reckon the onk is a good entry to mid-range unit,wheras the pioneer is a very classy midrange unit,with superior parts under the hood....

How would this fare against the pioneer VSX-LX52? This seems to have more power and more options?

Am looking to upgrade my Pioneer VSX819.

I have been really pleased with the quality sound and build of the 608. It certainly lives up to the hype!

Awesome piece of kit for the price,ticks all the boxes.

Ethernet connection would be welcome.

i'm upgrading from my pioneer vsx-d811s to this amp, running wharfedale diamond 10.1's (on the front) (9.1's on the rear and center)and a wharfedale sub, i'm upgrading mainly for the hdmi, this amp seemed the best at the price i got it for (£350) the only down point i can see is the lack of 5.1 analog in, but i'm willing to over look this for the other features, this could only be a pain if i can no longer get 5.1 out of my sacd player (i believe it only plays multichannel out over the 5.1 analog, not the digital out connections?)

i wanna to knw the abt the combination? hope tis is a gud combination?

And also i bought n exrra boston subwoofer n 2 speakers. can i b able to get 7.1 effect? but then how abt the second subwoofer? is it possible to connect 2 subwoofer in the same same room itself? if then can u tell me abt the placement of 2 subwoofer..?

And also i wanna knw abt the cables, especially to the speakers n subwoofer...?

I'm from Singapore.

I set up my home theatre room with Onkyo TX-SR608 which I paid for S$950 (about 460 British pounds).

I use Mordaunt Short Carnival 5.1 & an additional pair of Carnival 1 for rear surround. This is after several rounds of auditions on a few sets of HT speakers in similar price range.

I use Mitsubishi HC3800 Full HD projector & a 10m QED Performance HMDI cable.

Acoustics foams are installed on left, right & rear walls.

Very satisfied with the Onkyo TX-SR608. In my humble opinion, it is performing above its price bracket.

This is an absolute beauty.  I bought it 3 months ago and I cannot stop singing it's praises..I hooked it up with the Q-Acoustics 2020 and the 2070 sub woofer.  Brings even the 'duddest' movies to life.  Not to mention the the way it handles the music...My neighbours are still complaining...   Fantastic..Worth every penny..Drives the bass and treble with such precision..The best for the price..

Am planning to buy SR608, but speakers i dont have a good budget. so thinking of using Q Acoustics 2020 to combine with. Any suggestions are welcome.
