I live in NZ and after reading the review of the 515 I purchased one. It had all the specs I wanted but sadly after three days I returned it.
There is an inherent problem with the 515, and reading the forums also the 616. It appears that after a period of inactivity the HDMI pass through fails to work. I searched the Internet and there are a lot of people on the ONKYO forums that have the same issue. Just search for 'NR515 monitor out issue' and you'll see. This problem was first reported in May 2012 and ONKYO have failed to both acknowledge and fix. Annoyingly I replicated this issue after only three days but ONKYO are still asking users to specify all their equipment so they can provide a resolution.....since May.....with no answer as yet.
This is a shame as for the three days I had the 515 I was impressed. But the inherennt problem meant that it was not suitable for me.
Please be aware of the five star review.
it's just all too much complicated. wich model replaces wich and who got more spec or less. i think onkyo overdone it this time. why would you need to replace existing model with new one with same spec or in some case even less. i was going to buy 609, but i gues i'm to little to late us nobody sell them anymore except ex-displays or "B" models. then start looking for 616 and got heart atack... in states and canada everybody complaining about it with diferent issues. WHF did anounced in february that 616 in shops in april. they only phisically appears on the shelves few weeks ago. i wounder when WHF would do the proper review?
We'll review the 616 as soon as we get it, which we haven't yet.
I also read that the 616 is replacing the 609 albeit at a £100 premium, and some Internet dealers who have discontinued the 609 are listing the 616 as its replacement.
Looking at the spec of the 609 and 616 they are very similar with the 616 having a couple of new additions.
Can't imagine many 608 or 609 owners going to down spec a couple of essential features to the 515. (audyssey Dsx for example)
Well, as you point out, the 616 is £100 more than the 609, with the 515 selling at the same price as the outgoing 609 ie £500. So in monetary terms (if not spec), the 515 replaces the 609. That's what we've been told by Onkyo UK.
I'm told that's the information we were given.
Hi WHF.. Thank you for the review. It feels that I made a good choice by going with xx9 series rathern than the new x1x series and not loose anything on SQ.
BTW, are you sure that the 515 replaces 609 instead of 509? I was cross checking with 709 vs 717 and they seem to have similar feature sets. I also compared 709 to 616 (because if 515 replaces 609 then 616 should be a replacement for 709?) and it look like 616 and 609 are more on par with specs.
BEWARE! I'm now returning my Onkyo tx-nr616 as i have had 4 hdmi video out problems in 2 wks of getting it out of the box. Many other people have got this problem so reliabilty seems very low
