No marketing gimmickry at work here. These are serious cans – seriously good, that is

These headphones do indeed sound superb, they're also comfortable and the sound isolation does work, to a degree. However, the biggest problem is their cheaper siblings the Solo HD's. In terms of sound quality vs price, there really isn't that much in it. The Solo HD's sound is equally as impressive the bigger Beat's appear to have a larger soundstage, but this could be a psychological effect due to the fact that they're larger headphones, that completely cover your ears (The Solo HD's do not). The other drawback with these units is the fact that the noise cancellation cannot be turned off, without the sound being turned off too. So you can't use them passively. This makes using them an expensive affair as you'll be draining the 2xAAA's whenever you're using them, and on the occasions where you forget to turn them off! The battery cover also doesn't tighten as such. It's loose when it's attached, but this doesn't affect the sound. Weighing up the pro's and cons, the battery issue, the battery cover, the added  comfort, the price difference and the similar sound quality, the cheaper Solo HD's are a far, far better buy. Having said that, I do wish the earpieces were ever so slightly larger and if you wear glasses, the Solo HD's can hurt after a while. I do love them though enough to make me get back to the opticians and get me back into contact lenses.
