Headphones Product of the Year, Awards 2011. Versatile portable on-ears that sound amazing for the money.

Comments

I am in the process of getting a refund on a pair of AKG K450 headphones I got in July 2012 - thanks Amazon!!!.

I had read reviews indicating a possible problem with wiring failing after short period of use, and despite my being very careful when unfolding/folding, sure enough this week I lost sound on right speaker.

Although the sound quality is very good I wouldnt recommend these due to flimsy wiring.

Could anyone share their thoughts on how these isolate/leak sound? I'm looking at getting some headphones for the tube so they need to keep train noise out and my music 'in'. Thanks!

I totally agree with the review. And with the product of the year Award. It really sounds quite good.

It's lightweight and portable, so it's limited. But it does what it does very well. It's simply perfectly enjoyable to me!

Absolutely great headphones.

Got them for Christmas and one of my favourite sets.

Lightweight, comfortable and sound great on my iPhone/iPad

Carry case is smart to

Just bought a pair of these after previously trying skull candy lowriders and sennheiser cx400-II. After a couple of days on repeat to run them in I am impressed. Tight weighty punchy dynamic sound with a clear sweet treble that never strays into being bright or harsh. They are in a different league to the skull candy's. The Sennheisers were good but flimsy, which was a problem, but these outperform them and are solidly built too. I particularly like the detachable cable as this is where most headphones fail with use. I can't imagine how you could get better for 50 quid. They would be worth the money at twice that. Superb.

Just a bit of an update from just over a week ago... I'm hearing very slight improvements in all of the frequency range but I do mean VERY slight. I'm actually leaving them on for a few hours (even if I can't listen to them) at least every other day. These cans definitely need some serious running in...

Oh, the depth of bass is excellent by the way, I just hope it tightens up a bit in time.

Better than "Beats" Hands down.

I bought these mainly (sad, I know) to play battlefield on my Xbox on.

I hooked them up to my Harmon/Kardon AVR255 and at first wasn't impressed. The range didn't sound great with some noises getting distorted when going too high pitched, but as others have said after a couple of months this improves and now I've had them 3 months, they sound great! Paid £50 for mine (on Amazon I think) and they are worth much more. When compared to Dr Dre Beats they sound like the much more expensive product yet they are about 1/6th of the price (beats are £300 I think).

Final sentence... GET THESE HEADPHONES!

After having read some very favourable reviews I decided to buy a pair of these - big mistake... I've had them for a few days now and have to say I'm really disappointed. Firstly, on a positive note, they are very comfortable and the bass is very deep. My gripe though is concerning the sheer lack of detail on offer. My previous pair of Vivancos were superb but these sound woolly and unclear. I'm hoping, with some extensive 'burning in time', they improve dramatically. If they don't, I'll be looking to another manufacturer.

I am listening to these headphones through my NAD CD player (through which my Vivancos and my mate's Grados sound excellent).

I've had the K450's for a week and although the sound has bags of bass - which can be overpowering - the rest of the frequency spectrum seems lacking in detail.

At first I thought it may be the absence of 'burn in' but I've had the headset playing on my iPod for at least 72 hours and although the sound has improved, it does seem a little underwhelming to be given the 'Headphone of the Year' gong. I usually agree with the reviews here but maybe WHF got it wrong this time?

The other odd quibble is that they seem to have a smallish sweet spot which can be annoying using them. Maybe it's just my odd ears.

I'm under the impression that these may need good amplification to truly shine.

I also have a trusty pair of PX200-I's and the Beyer Dynamic DTX100. Both of which have good bass and along with a more even tonal balance.

I Updated my 10 year old Sennheiser PX200-I to the AKG K450 to get more bass.

At first the sound was very muffled, bass was overwhelming, mid-tones and high notes subdued.

After three weeks burn-in time the bass became much, much better. Deep and not at all overpowering. I still have to increase (via EQ in MediaMonkey) the mid-range and high notes a bit to improve the sound.

Update after 8 weeks of use. The sound quality has increased even more. I recommend everyone to give these headphones a try.

The sound is punchy and very detailed. The sound stage is wide and I every instrument has it's own locatin in space.

I use this headphone at the office on my HP EliteBook 8460p notebook (so not the best audio device). My music are 100% FLAC files (some high-res). I use MediaMonkey for playback.

The comfort level is a good but different than the PX200-I. I can ware it easily for 4-5 hours at a time.

The supplied cables are on the short side (ca 1.1M & 0.5 M) and thin. I hope is stronger as it looks. I added a 40cm extension cord for more reach.

I have the cans now for 2 months and use them 2-3hrs per day. They are also very good on my mobile phone (SE Xperia X8 )

great headphone, very clear sound, deep bass (you'll not believe how deep they will go) they fold up really small too, as mentioned above they come alive on decent hardware, smartphone or a quality amp (i use these on my iphone 4s), but they do still do the job on cheaper hardware, small light comfy and with great sound quality, plus a good deep bass, and very cheap from online retailers such as richersounds and superfi, you cant get better for the money, thats a fact!

Watch out when shopping, I hear there is a lot of fake K450's out there.

anyway, I bought K450 after the price of Sennheiser px200-II went up by 20€. I already have px200 closed cans (love them) and px100-II (not so much for my taste, but still good open cans).

At first when I compared K450 to Sennheisers, I found they lack some soundstage and sounds a bit moody. Bass was a little sloppy, boomy and hampering all over other frequencies... I tried multiple laptops and a desktops, not much of a change there.  In desperation I tried to connect it to my marantz amplifier with CD player and WOW it transformed! Bass went from sloppy to precise and able to produce deep bass (amazing for such small closed-back headphones), but still following song rythm easily. Mids lost boomy feeling, but stayed very full and powerfull (K450 is very "in your face" sonding at middle freq's) and highs are polite enough. I guess K450's are not so easy to drive, contrary to some beliefs. And the seal is very good too!

Oh, and word of warning, K450's like open and dynamic songs very much, but it's not so good with low mp3 bitrates and heavily compressed masterings... I would try to avoid those!

But K450's are not as bright sounding as some of the AKG's we know. I would recomend a bright sounding amplifier or a portable player (they go very well with Sony NWZ and X series). I could say Ipod's would love them too. If you already have a player you could play with EQ and lower the 200-500hz range a bit...

Not sure about the price but I've seen them on the net from Hong Kong for £39

You can buy the K450 headphones on their own for around £50.00 on the net, i think i might give these a dabble as i am getting rid of my Dr. Dre iBeats.

Nice to see some more headphone reviews! This AKG is indeed a great pair of headphones. I almost bought them but in the end I went for the (more expensive) Beyerdynamic DT 1350, which are even better imho. Maybe you guys can review these headphones too in one of the next months? I'd be very curious to read your impressions on the Beyers.

Keep up the good work!
